Valdez: Day Four (Just can't stop.)

Best laid plans. The problem is sleep, right? Too jazzed to get to bed, but my internal clock tells me it's five a.m. at one. Last night I took a prophylactic Ibuprofen and a Calms Forté and bedded down just a little after midnight. Set an alarm for 6:30 a.m.

Someone else set had set an alarm for six, and either they are dead or they didn't come home last night. So, anyway, I got up at six. It was a pretty solid, uninterrupted night of sleep. Hoorah!

Distance: 3.15 miles
Avg Pace: 7:45
Duration: 24:26
Route: Port Valdez Loop

No run yesterday, instead I attended yoga, which I would have done again today except it conflicts with a rehearsal for another playwright's work. It was very therapeutic and I enjoyed it a great deal, I hope attend again on Thursday (no yoga scheduled for tomorrow.)

If you want more detailed info on my days, go here. It is crazy to think that the very first time I brought a running kit with me so that I could run on a journey was not until the New York Fringe in 2004. Prior to that I would be in a strange place, sleeping in a strange bed, keeping odd hours with no opportunity to exercise or just experience whatever unique location as a runner.

I had even considered leaving my kit behind for this trip, can you imagine? I was apprehensive about where I might run, what dangers there might be. Can't imagine how disappointed I would feel right now.

Temperature: 48°
Climate: cool and bright!
Mood: good

First real sweat of the week! Clear blue sky, big green mountains. Yes, saw a Bald Eagle at Ruth Pond, acting like just another bird.

As I drift off into the night, I’m in flight.

Schmuck face.

Now the nights get long, rehearsals stretching to 10 pm. Coming home I find a dish waiting for me because my wife and family love me and take care of me. I do my part my washing things and putting them away. But the nights push into midnight and there is not much chance for sleep. We head back to work, stare into a screen, assemble, cut, compose grant requests plus the odd assignment.

Our internet is out. I spent the morning away from Facebook and found that I had accomplished the entire morning routine of creating lunches, washing leftover dishes and preparing breakfast, which usually takes about an hour, in ten minutes.

You know, there’s a six of Heineken in the fridge I bought, like, ten days ago and it’s still untouched. This does not mean I have not been drinking. It just means an entire bottle is a time commitment I do not have and a small glass of wine goes so much better with food.

Temperature: Not sure. 25°?
Climate: crusty, uneven snow
Distance: 3.25 miles
Weight: 175.5 lbs.

Bit of a sinus headache, and an empty stomach. Running took care of both. That, and a Sudafed.

Antsy

I have mentioned previously that when I was 12, I broke my leg. I mentioned at the time that I should have received physical therapy. The subject came up yesterday and my mother said no one had ever suggested physical therapy.

The reason the subject came up was because I was standing there, in the kitchen of my parents house, with my bare feet flat on the floor. I was trying to stand with my feet parallel, just making myself aware of the alignment of my feet, attempting to achieve balance. Just an absent-minded exercise while conversation was going on around me.

"Your right knee points in," my wife observed, and she was right. Not a little, but by very noticeable degrees. I had never noticed this before. No wonder.

"Yoga can help that," she added. Damn her. She knows I can't stand yoga. Yoga hurts me. Yoga makes me cry. Yoga killed my dog.

Listening to: PODRUNNER Classic - Hard Driven (160 BPM)

Great run ... but my head is very antsy today. All weekend, actually. There are a lot things going on - for the next two months. Program with at-risk youth in Lake County wraps up next week, the playwrights event at Cain Park is this weekend, arts camp starts shortly after that - during which I have a long-planned family excursion - and then, you know, the Fringe Festival, with the school year commencing the day I return. And grants, grant, grants.

I don't mind the work, it's the multi-tasking I can't handle.

Weather: overcast & perfect
