You can run, you can run. But it will catch up.

Current read.
Mind cloud. I do have things to accomplish. I am on a bit of a brain sabbatical. There is some writing, though. I think this weekend might be good, we'll see. I just convinced myself that I don't actually just write down whatever comes into my head. Except here.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 28:41
Pace: 9:15

Tuesday evening I started feeling something in the back of my throat, but it wasn't until Wednesday night that it broke out into something debilitating. That night I slept for twelve hours. And yet, by the time I got to urgent care -- today -- nothing. Post nasal drip? What? Anyway, I have a sore throat.

And the weather is nice.

Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 53°
Climate: partly cloudy & cool
Mood: a little drowsy

In two more runs, I will be halfway through the year runs. And soon we will know if we will be attempting "number five." What's good about the year runs is that I don't have to think about what I am listening to next. If we return to training, that will be something to plan for.

We are North American scum.

Fatigue sets in. I am rousing myself to run this evening, even as there is dinner to be made, because I'm trying to keep up. But I don't know what to listen to, and I feel a bit weary and listless.

There are more than physical reasons why this is so. But it's challenging.

O, what a morning!

This morning I felt weak and sore. We are no longer getting the rest. We have been getting no longer eight hours, merely seven, or fewer.

But I still do not drink on week nights, Abe o am not snacking. It is amazing how I can gain weight without sneaking cookies, soda, or chips. And yet, no cookies, soda or chips.

Man. Remember smoking? What was up with that?

Stranger roads than this one.

March passed with barely a headache. But now I have sinus pain every day. Wednesday afternoon my face felt worse and worse and I ended up crawling into bed all evening. Long night’s sleep, though.

What is up with these playlists? Karina Longworth produces the amazing You Must Remember This podcast chronicling the "secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood's first century."

Earlier this year she presented a whopping twelve episodes about the manner in which Hollywood both pushed the boundaries of sexual activity on screen while also cleaving closely to heteronormative morality during the 1980s.

She curated this playlist, which is by its very subject matter is exactly the kind of music I prefer to run to, namely upbeat 80s technopop. And it's a long playlist!

This is the first time I have shut out work for the duration of a two week vacation in twenty-five years. In fact, it was because I hadn't checked my work voice mail for two weeks in 1996 that we missed out on a promotional opportunity, a fact which seems trivial now but at the time I felt a great deal of shame about it. Since then I have continually checked my work email, all during vacations. I don't always respond, but I keep in touch. Not this year. Hopefully never again.

Tomorrow, however, I will have to resume in preparation for Monday. What will happen?

Who's tripping down the streets of the city?

Beautiful day yesterday. Yes, it was a little chilly but we spent little time out doors. Mom joined us at the aquarium, I think she really liked that. Traditionally when we get the cemetery a little clean up is in order.

I realized some time ago that a communal grave for neonatal deaths would eventually lose attendants. People move, or they move on. After a hard winter, or any winter at all, the stone would be covered with mud, leaves, and acorns, perhaps a small toy or stuffed animal soaked in dirt.

We bring a small rake and a broom, tools to clean the stone before we decorate. Yesterday I was surprised to find it had been recently visited, someone had thoroughly cleaned the stone and there was a bouquet a blue and white silk flowers.

We remember.

Distance: 3 miles
Route: Forest Hill Loop

Slow run today, just chugging along. I am just exhausted. It doesn't help that I chose to wear the winter running jacket, it makes me feel like a plump bear.

Not just physically exhausted, emotionally so. There are so many things going on, in work, in art, and in family and family and more family. This did not start last month, I have felt as though the floor were about to collapse for some time now. And then it did.

But there's another floor beneath that one, and it caught me but it's also kind of creaky.

Climate: cool

Light will keep your heart beating in the future.

The end of a four-day holiday weekend in Cleveland. The wife made a heritage bird for Thanksgiving, we saw the premiere of Clara & The Nutcracker at Talespinner Children's Theatre and took my brother and his family for a walk around the shiny, new downtown Cleveland.

Thursday evening, the most unusual thing, my arms hurt. I am not used to having such extreme soreness following something as brief as a five-mile race, and never so intensely in my arms. My only guess is that with the slushy, slippery pavement, I was holding a lot of tension in my arms in an attempt to keep my balance.

On Friday I am very happy to say my entire family pitched in and did a lot of cleaning up of the house, especially the downstairs. Today is the last day of November, and I have kids who really, really want to bring the Christmas decorations out of the attic, so I think I know what's going on today.

However, right now it is fifty-five degrees out. And we're not getting any better than that.

Temperature: 55°
Distance:3.25 miles

Also, my abdomen. Lots of upper body work in that race. Maybe this is the beginning of something good.

A little wine and a moan.

Weather has been ideal for running, and yet. Since we returned from vacation, the days have been long and inaccessible, at the service of work, children and home. Baseball games, soccer practice, music lessons, tending the injuries, enjoying movies and television, and the company of friends.

But no running. Evenings end around midnight, the mornings spent either writing or sleeping in ... but usually sleeping in.

There has been yardwork, however. More proud of the front beds than I have in some time. Moved a ton (literally!) of earth last weekend, weeding and planting and making all nice. At least, in the front yard. Don't go in the back yard.

Sitting at my desk for eight hours a day, and not exercising, makes me torpid and dull. Again with the right vastus lateralis, always a pain when I am off the road.

Temperature: 77°
Distance: 3.25 miles

Better any run than no run at all. It's Boy Camp this weekend, I am about to pick him up from goalie practice and we are going to see opening night of Cleve Shakes Romeo and Juliet BECAUSE WE ARE CRAZY LIKE THAT.

My eyes are on fire, my head is throbbing. Physically, it has been a challenging day. I woke with a slight headache which has carried on, slow and low, throughout the day. Nice evening with the kids, putting Christmas decorations on the mantle (tree, tomorrow, I promised) but I did not want to go to bed feeling like this, I wanted to run now. Blood will circulate, breathing will be deep.

However, not wanting a repeat of yesterday, I wore a lighter hat. A bandana would be too think, I opted for a butter beanie instead. I have not used one for a while. Now I remember why. They push my glasses deep into my face, it is just too tight.

Otherwise, however ... nice run. Cool and crisp, surprising amount of energy, considering. I am hoping that this end-of-day run gives me a good night's sleep, and pleasant dreams.

Temperature: 36°
Climate: cool, man.
Distance: 3.25 miles
Weight: 173.5 lbs.

Man. The last four years I ran a mere four times during the month of November ... well, except for 2010. Then I ran five.

I'm staring at the asphalt.

Don't know what happened. I was driving home with the windows down and I felt fine. The drive home, that relatively speaking brief drive home can make me bleary-eyed, it's just boring. But I felt fine, for the most part ... but by the time I got to the grocery store, I was tired.

The grocery store can be a major soul-sucking experience, I don't care which store it is. Sometime it hits me in produce, Good God, it's the first section of the store and I have been here for half my life already. But that wasn't the case today, I was in and out of there real fast with a lot of great fruits and vegetables.

But then I went into the aisles ... I didn't think we needed much but whatever I wanted, I couldn't find it. That's when I aged a year. But the time I emerged into the hideously bright parking lot, I was spent. I came home, dinner was almost ready, everyone was active and on top of things, I am was like Zombie Dad. It was pathetic.

The boy needed to get to baseball, and the wife generously offered to take the girl to practice soccer in an adjacent field, so that I could do whatever I liked -- with an emphasis on taking a run. Maybe a short one. Could do me good.

Actually, just writing this has already done me good.

I think I was hungry.

Temperature: 82°
Climate: warm
Distance: 3.25 miles

Freshly-mow lawns, bright, early-evening sunshine, and what do you know -- other runners. The kind of people who regularly use the gym. That's nice. Get off my sidewalk, I was out here when it was nineteen degrees, who do you think you are?

Stopped by the schoolyard where the boy was practicing and the ladies were kicking the ball around with boys who were absolutely incapable of not touching the ball with their hands.

Running feels so good. The running feels good. I feel good. This day is nearing its end. There is so much to accomplish in each and every one. And these are good things to notice.

I'm standing here on the ground.

Distance: 4 miles
Route: To Parkside Blvd. and back.

Exhausted all yesterday, got to bed reasonably early (shot for 9, hit 9.45 - damn you, sexy POTUS) with a non-alocoholic beverage as my nightcap. Still, woke at 5 AM thinking ... what? No. No, can't do this. Long day today, first night of rehearsals, reports due, must rest, have solid, clear concentration ... so, of course, my mind was spinning and there was no way I was going back to sleep.

So I got up. Tomorrow morning is the Friday of Running. If I can make tomorrow, then I get a day off. That's how we do this.

Day one, nervous. Day two, cocky. Day three, wretched.

Woke with sinus pain. Must sleep when I can sleep. Took pain reliever, pseudoephedrine, and put on a nasal strip and hit the road. And now I'm feeling better.

Nope.

Sorry.

Christ, no.

Residency Training period means driving an hour each way to a high school in Elyria. By Wednesday, I am usually becoming very drowsy on the drive home. This is nothing new, it has been going on for nigh 11 years.

In the old days my drug of choice was a 20 ounce Coke or -- when I was training for the marathon -- some kind of "energy" drink. I am not proud of this. This week it takes a 16 oz. soda to get through the afternoon, and for the drive home I play loud rock music, which does the trick. Talk radio is out, it is not out of the ordinary for me to be listening to David Bianculli reviewing the latest hip cable program I can't afford when I suddenly start wailing like a small child, OH MY GOD!! THIS IS SOOO BOOOOORING!!!!

Yes, I know. Everyone does that when David Bianculli is on. But I feel it more.

I chose wisely.

Distance: 2 miles
Temperature: 43º
Weight: 180.5 lbs.
Weather: rain. pleasant rain.

FYI -- When stopping at the grocery store for cat food, I did not buy up a can of Pringles. I was standing in the aisle. I was looking at them. I had it in my hand, Marcus.

Then I remembered it's Marcos pizza night.

Can you spare one dream for me?

Skipped a day. Getting so tired as the week has moved on. Would like more sleep. Taking a 9.30 pm run can be exhilarating, but it can also leave me wrecked for the following morning. Little writing going on this week. Hope to alter that tomorrow.

Kids spent the night at my parents, we took this opportunity to see WAR HORSE. Good movie, very well made. Pure Spielberg, however, all of your emotions handed to you in a neatly wrapped box. Still, as I have been diving into World War One history, the extremely realistic (as if I would know) battle scenes are thrilling and absolutely horrible.

Spring ends today. Happy New Year.

Weariness. I was looking forward to running, and had a good morning (no New Year's hangovers in this house) but as I geared up I started feeling a bit overwhelmed. I ran consistently, without stopping, but after a couple blocks I decided to take the 2 mile course instead of the 3 miler.

I want to run every day, every other day, get back into a rhythm, a need. And to have legs and lungs that can take it. I need to work up to this, lately if I try three or four mile runs, it wrecks me for the rest of the day. That's not how it's supposed to feel.

It is a new year, a big year. Time is an issue, but so is energy, strength, endurance. The exercise is supposed to make everything else possible, and not its opposite.

Every run I will feature a playlist for each year from the one in which I was born to the present, in chronological order. That's new. I am wondering if the forward trajectory of years (rather random annual playlists) will give me additional energy.

Wish me luck. And good luck to you!

This is how I deal

Afraid of running. Hmn. That's new.

It's not even freezing, not quite. The ground cover is slippery. Slushy. And I have not been out for two and a half weeks, it has been so cold, there have been birthday parties, rehearsals, and so on. Whatever. Life intrudes, so what.

I would rather sleep. But I won't. Yay for me.

Moving my hips like yeah

So what am I doing. I am making up for time off by running (nearly) every day. Running 3 miles a day is no big thing. Running three miles in snow is. The crusty, icy patches irritating and potentially damaging, but that's not what makes it the most difficult. It's the places that just have snow, light, slippery snow. My thighs get so tired. The front of my thighs, and my inner thighs. My calves hurt later on, because I am lifting my toes so much as I run.

So, the cold? No, not really. Not until it gets closer to ten degrees, I'm not even wearing the neckwrap yet. The wind, sure, especially on my way out up Monticello, but by the time I cut West on Lee it has subsided, most runs. It is simply wearying.
