I'm chill like that.

Pretty epic.
Here's the thing about my last run, or my last two runs. They were slogs. Often, I am feeling down but when I hit the road I feel great. It's kind of why I do this.

The last two runs, especially on Monday, and in spite of the lighter weather, it took effort to lift my feet. And then on Tuesday I just tapped out at work. I almost passed out, twice, I think. Not feeling well. No pain, no temperature, just malaise, dizziness, exhaustion. I slept thirteen hours on Tuesday night.

Distance: 3.5 miles

The consistency, it has been a gift. Sometimes you need time off. We have been driving to Maine, getting in and out of a car has been arduous. Just sitting down. Just walking. Sitting down is actually more difficult that standing up. I need to see a doctor.

Suddenly, a new burst of energy has occurred.

On February 9, 2006, I wrote about "the route." This was the route I regularly ran, ever since I moved to Potter Village. I would weave up and down the streets in the my neighborhood, and then perhaps do one large loop that, again, did not take me very far from home.

I had not realized this yet, the first side street I would take had (it still has) a significant incline, which was taxing on this inexperienced runner who wore nine year old sneakers and had only stopped smoking less than five years earlier.

Charge me up now.

March 2006
(That's a dye job.)
With the life I am currently living, it makes sense that I completely forgot to acknowledge the fact that this blog is twenty years old. "Daddy Runs Fast" began on January 10, 2006. My first run of the new year. I was 37 years old. I was about 170 lbs. I was complaining about belly fat. I had plantar warts. I had a lingering hamstring pull. I would soon develop shin splints. I thought myself old.

I am glad that at that time, I considered 170 lbs. to be "10 pounds overweight." That I knew then what my ideal weight is — which is where I am now. A thing to be proud of. On that date, I ran two miles, and that it was hard. I would run a marathon that November.

What a week! I received a brush-up on my stage combat on Monday. It has been well over ten years, maybe much more, since I have participated in any of the fights. It is remarkable how much I remembered.

Then I had a kink in my back yesterday, but that was temporary. Less so, coming down from the attic on Monday evening I banged the shit out of my knee. No serious damage, but that really hurt.

I'm not a woman. I'm not a man.

Last Saturday, as we were commencing our drive home, the four of us were having sandwiches at Y Knot in Damariscotta (highly recommended).

The subject was backpay, Jordan had never heard what a herniated disc was. Everyone took turns trying to explain, the thing is I haven’t had back issues in quite some time and said so.

And yet, as fate would have it by the end of the day, I was feeling a little pain, and by Sunday morning it had intensified quite a bit, as if, by being discussed, the beast had awakened.

This time, it's back pain. A pain by my right shoulder blade, caused by stress and anxiety, and I suppose, a lack of regular exercise. The nature of my game.

Since the semester concluded, I have fallen into a post-project malaise. It's not like I don't have a lot to do at the moment, but I lack the endorphin-generating pressure of reading and writing for a grade and the approval of my professors.

Last week I was able to focus my energies on staining the deck, but that is complete and today it is rainy and cool, which is contributing to my mood.

BUT, now that classes are over, I am going to try to see a movie at the Cedar-Lee theater every Monday evening.

I'm calling you to dinner.

Last run, I began to feel pain in my back, the lower right side. It hurt before bed, too. I hope this does not bode poorly for the summer.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 33:22
Pace: 10:10
Route: Rec Center (treadmill)
Mood: good

So yeah, back on the treadmill. When they reopened the rec center, they put machines onto the track to maintain distance. Not bad, though. One of the new machines has a fan, which is nice. The last time I used a treadmill I noticed how overheated I get when I'm not moving through air. Wish the fan had been stronger, but I could tell a difference.

Also. Running in a mask? Not great. But I did it. "Mask optional - but recommended," the sign read.

Intake
Breakfast: red velvet cake & ice cream, coffee (3x)
Lunch: big ass salad
Cocktail Hour: Sweet Old-Fashioned
Dinner: quinoa salad

Last time out I felt this pull in my back, like I was about to seize up or something. I liked the Go-Go's for a while. Funny how "cool" works, Belinda Carlisle's foray into schmaltzy late 80s soft pop lost cred for the entire band ... and that's not right. Sting's solo work is also air-pudding, but that hasn't changed how I feel about the Police.

"Club Zero" was a new Go-Go's single that came out last year. Yay, reunion. I've heard it often enough to decide I really hate it. Especially the chorus, it sounds like the theme song to both The Monkees and The Banana Splits, which you have to admit are thematically similiar.

We're here! We're powerful! "No fucks given!" ... an actual lyric. I mean, you sang "I'm Mad About You," Belinda. "Heaven Is a Place On Earth." I guess I'm withholding judgement.

Life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes.

The boy landed on his back and neck during wrestling practice, had the wind knocked out of him but otherwise seemed all right. It worries me. We went for a short run this afternoon. 2018 Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon

This guy has kept me running, and I am grateful.
I have done unwise things before big races before. Six years ago, I took the kids to Bearden's for dinner the night before running the Cleveland Marathon. Cheeseburgers and onion rings, not exactly pasta. But life is sweet and anyway, I nailed the run.

Yesterday, I escorted the middle school orchestra to Cedar Point for the annual Music In The Parks competition. My son plays bass. The good news is that all groups -- the orchestra, chamber orchestra and band -- had superiors ratings and took first place in their division. They all received a trophy for overall excellence!

The band news is that after a full day in the park I was in bed shortly before midnight. Four hours of sleep. And though there was no snow, it was a cool, slightly damp day. Perfect temperature, but my feet were wet. My feet were wet yesterday. I want dry feet every day from now until I die.

Official Time: 2:01:37.01
Avg. Pace: 9:17

Place Men 45-49: 81

Personal Best Half: 01:41:21 (Cleveland 2016)

Somewhere during the race I told Chris that I had already forgotten everything that had happened that morning, and would tomorrow have forgotten everything yet to come. It was a strange thing to realize, but it is mostly true. Unlike previous races in which I work very hard to recall details to set down for memory, I was just running my way through this one -- making jokes, for sure -- but just kind of dazed.

Four hours of sleep will do that to a person. So will pain.

The fact is, I ended this race feeling depressed. I had pain shooting down not one but both buttocks. I could feel it in my spine. I imagined that if I had attempted the full 26.2 I would develop serious back pain. Also, my right knee started to get sore. I felt like a mess.

We tried to keep up with the two hour group, we weren't looking to achieve greatness, but it was impossible. A 9:17 pace is actually a good average for what Chris and I had been making through our training.

I have to admit, I didn't train very well, in general. But then, what I was really trying to do was be able to run long distances and still have a daily life devoid of limping. In that I have been successful.

I keep telling myself I am just exhausted. Allie gave me a suggestion for a chiropractor and I must seek that out. I need to do something.

This happened ten years ago, as I was about to turn forty. My knee blew up and I wondered if I would ever run again. I had an operation, and I have been running fine ever since. Then I fucked up my back a little over three years ago, and the condition is getting worse.

I love running. Running has made getting older bearable. It is a source of pride and achievement, and it makes me feel so good. I am afraid of ever giving it up.

Saturday, June 03, 2017

Look here, Junior. Don't you be so happy.

That evening, following my last run, my hip hurt a bit. I stand more than I used to, which makes the pain not happen, if you follow me. It's like that old joke;
Patient: Doctor! Doctor! It hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Then don't do that.
Sitting all winter, at my desk, at home writing, it hurt my tuchus. So, nu? Don't sit so much.

Distance: 1 mile
Route: Monticello Track

Best. Joke. Ever.
Then there is the eating, which has gotten a bit out of control. I have gotten out of the habit of packing lunch, which is how you control your budget, but also your portion size. The other night I remembered to cut my sandwich at a restaurant in half to take the other half home, but that takes a supreme effort of will.

But it doesn't always. When I get used to smaller portions, I get used to smaller portions. I must get back to that. Also, not eating half a bag of Doritos on a Friday night.

Temperature: 66°
Climate: glorious
Mood: better

Rode my bike to the middle school track, took five laps and home. Felt good. The exercises help. My back hurt in a very unhappy-making place for twenty-four hours, by last night it was gone.

I wonder if I will run long-distance again without pain.

Baseline: 174 lbs.
Today: 171.5 lbs. (+2.0)
Goal: 165 lbs.
Ideal: 160 lbs.

Yes, I have seriously crashed. Back into the 170s. This is depression eating, a compensation for a lack of other things. I do not need a psychologist to tell me this, I know it while I am doing it. It feels good. And it has to stop.

Man. I haven't even had breakfast today. That's empty stomach weight - only after last night, my stomach is not yet empty.

Here's the thing, I need to get to my normal weight - 165 lbs. - for a very good reason. That is where my summer shorts fit most comfortably.

Interlude

Visited the physical therapist yesterday. Resuming a regimen of lower back pain exercises. My slipped disc may be a contributing factor to the sciatica, something out of place touching something else. I didn't get it, but whatever.

Yesterday I did the exercises in the morning, which made my sciatica act up throughout the day. Sitting through a play was murderous, and so was the play. But I dutifully did them again last thing last night, and again first thing this morning.

I had written every morning this week, but today we slept in a little, I did my exercises. It is frustrating when physical limitations get in the way of the work.

Put my spine out of place.

My back has been acting up, not sure what to do about that, except to remember not to pick anything up. I have gotten pretty good about asking other people to pick things up, in general, and I feel entirely justified in doing so.

Today's long run was surprisingly difficult. Trying not to let it affect me mentally, just push on. But just the other day I was sharing with someone at work how my back doesn't bother me any more, and now it does.

Right now I feel tired and hungry. Time to shower, take anti-inflammatory pain reliever and wrap that knee. There is a finish line ahead of me, but I haven't reached the starting gate yet.

These are not metaphors, I am talking about a literal starting gate and finish line.

I'll be back at Echo Beach some day.

Home. That was a beautiful journey, from beginning to end. One of my favorites.

Even better, we were largely packed the night before, making our departure stress-free. Yesterday morning we were drinking coffee on the deck like it was just another day, three hours later we were on the road.

Last night, the crowning achievement, watching the final of the WWC. The three of them were in Ottawa when the series began, and here we were watching the triumphant finale. The weeks peel away, and yet there is still so much summer to enjoy.

Neglected to note: Twenty-one runs in June. Far and away another record. This year is going well.
