Further all the time.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame + Museum
Saturday afternoon run.  Woke this morning at 5 AM and said no. Too tired. Not this morning. Besides, it was raining. But the day has worked out, rehearsal then to see the boy play Joan Jett songs at the Rock Hall, now a quick four miler before we head out for BURGERS. No idea where, don't really care.

Distance: 4 miles
Duration: 31:10
Avg Pace: 7:47
Route: Cain Park Loop

Hmn. Slight pain in my right knee for the first mile, then it stopped. In general, feeling free and strong.

Temperature: 66
Climate: overcast, cool, windy, sunny!
Hydration: yes
Water Stop: yes
Stretches: no

Your perfect verse is just a lie.

It was the left knee.

We move forward, slowly. I feel as though I have been locked into one state for the past seven months, focused on one single task. And now I open my eyes and see so many wonderful opportunities lay before me.

And children. I see children.

I believe the pain in my left knee was some freak thing, but it's exactly the kind of thing I worry about. It has been five years since my operation, and I have been running full-steam since then. But for almost half a year I was deep in the doubt I would ever run again, and that was very, very challenging for me. I worry about what will happen to my brain if I am ever taken off the road.

Speaking of which, my new running gear is all black. Not the best choice for a before-dawn run.

Temperature: 75°
Climate: light rain
Distance: 3.25 miles

That was difficult. Getting up was difficult, getting out was difficult, the run itself was difficult, deciding what to write was difficult. And I really do not like using the word 'difficult'.

Why put up with painful corns any longer?

The Oatmeal

Okay. The Oatmeal nailed it, again. I can stop blogging now, you read that and everything will be made clear to you. My work here is done.

Due to some unfortunate freak scheduling, which was no one's fault though I feel horribly responsible, I have not seen my children in two and a half weeks. I went to New York on 8/8, and when I returned ten days later they had already been taken to their grandparents' in Athens for a week-long excursion, as part of the annual scramble to occupy the kids at camps and on vacations and min-vacations while two parents try to work.

No, it's not like being in the military, two and a half weeks. But I miss my children powerfully. It is depressing. I have grown accustomed to their faces. Hearing certain recent pop songs remind me of car trips back and forth to summer camps listening to Radio Disney.

There was a bar in Avenue A which was playing virtually every top ten song of 2013 for the couple of hours we were in there. Really? Clarity makes me misty?

To cheer myself up today I bought a new running kit. New shirt, shorts, eyeglass strap and that other thing men need to run with.

Temperature: 71°
Climate: muggy
Distance: 3.25 miles

Woke this morning with a band of pain below my left knee. I think this has to do with the new seating arrangement in my new office ... or just that I have been sitting a lot the past several days, after walking non-stop for weeks. It has been a while since either of my knees hurt.

Interlude

The holiday season is here, that deadly period between Halloween and New Year's when the office is full of candy, cookies, nut bread. The beer is heavier -- and so am I!
There are too many activities, and this season we appear to be indulging in all of them. Keep in mind, we try not to. We try to say no. We try not to tax the children, or ourselves. But not in 2012. We have been on personal austerity for almost four years. Not that everything costs money, it doesn't. But a lot of things that come to us through personal affiliation are surrounded by hidden costs. Babysitters. Dinners out. Gifts. Just Saturday afternoon we did local shopping, which brought with it lunch at a local restaurant, which cost quadrupled the amount spent on the shopping.

And restaurant dining means eating more than usual. I imagine eating less, smaller portions, no seconds. But it doesn't happen. Thanksgiving was absurd.

Meanwhile, it is an astonishing 63° today, but between a winter basketball registration and clinic for the boy, aforementioned shopping spree, one of the last fall soccer games and a trip to see The Whipping Man at Cleveland Play House, there will be no running today. No running for ten days.

My right knee is where it began last summer. Pain in or about the lateral tendon. I believe this is due to an old futon mattress, it's like sleeping in a ditch. The pain in my shins has been exacerbated by ... well, running, I guess. Maybe the barefoot slippers are not good for me. But then, neither is running once a week -- or less.

I need motivation. But then, this is always a difficult time of year for me, for running. True, I ran a mere four times in November. But that is average, for November, I have a record here, in this blog. Four or five times during November. And also in December, anywhere between five runs or none at all. I can do better than that. I mean, my grandfather can do at least that, and he's been dead for seven years.

I love this tune.

I did not know this would be their last studio album. But as I had ceased practically all interest in Nine Inch Nails following The Downward Spiral, it is quite possible that had EBTG released another disc, I may not have gotten it. They were a band of my twenties, they helped define my twenties, moving from smooth post-mod pop jazz, to the accidental transition to club music with a very popular remix of Missing in 1995.

The dance remix of Missing is actually an improvement on the original, in the exact same way that the dance remix of Somebody That I Used to Know is not.

We met Tracey and Ben (as fans) after the only gig in Cleveland they ever played, during summer of 1996, promoting Walking Wounded. Maybe that should have been the end. But this album, pushing further into outright club music, was also right where I was at that time.  Hilarious. Low swinging torch music when I was still a kid, then bass and beats as I entered my thirties. I find it amusing that the same act composed both the instrumentals Crabwalk and Compression.

I still listen to them, I just don't think I would have been interested in what's next. For so many bands, you don't always want their new album. Maybe it is the feeling of disappointment when the new stuff pales in comparison to the past. Or maybe it is the fear that I do.

I ran only once last October. In November, I ran four times, mostly around Thanksgiving when I had time, not when I made time. I must improve on that. Running helps my knee, but it has continued to be sore, especially at night. I want that to go away.

Fall! Fall! Fall! Fall! Fall!

Worst. Cover art. Ever.

I can't keep up. Not enough running, and I do not sleep through the night. I toss and turn, bedeviled by sharp pain in the outside of my right knee.

In spite of one of my co-workers kind observations that I lost a lot of weight since last fall, the fact is I have put a lot back since last spring. I got a big, slack belly. The pants no longer fit. These are also bad things for a weak back and pained knees.

Did some knee bends, like I did so successfully during training last winter. Sit-ups would also be smart.

If the posters in the window at Tommy's were to be believed, Soul Coughing played Cleveland a total of fifty-two dates in 1994.* And yet I did not see them until they had a "surprise" gig at the Euclid Tavern in 1998 where they unfortunately played nothing but tracks from their upcoming and least regarded album, El Oso.

It is also entirely possible that Doughty was extremely high.

Distance: 4 miles
Route: To Parkside Blvd. and back.

Exhausted all yesterday, got to bed reasonably early (shot for 9, hit 9.45 - damn you, sexy POTUS) with a non-alocoholic beverage as my nightcap. Still, woke at 5 AM thinking ... what? No. No, can't do this. Long day today, first night of rehearsals, reports due, must rest, have solid, clear concentration ... so, of course, my mind was spinning and there was no way I was going back to sleep.

So I got up. Tomorrow morning is the Friday of Running. If I can make tomorrow, then I get a day off. That's how we do this.

You either got it or you don't.

Put Those Shoes On: Running Won't Kill Your Knees
NPR 3/29/2011
In one study, Swedish researchers found that exercise, including jogging, may even be beneficial. Felson describes how researchers took one group of people at risk of osteoarthritis and had them engage in exercise, including jogging. The other group didn't exercise. After imaging the joints of the participants in both study groups, they found that the biochemistry of cartilage actually appeared to improve in those participants who were running. Felson says that suggests that "running is actually healthy for the joint."
Imagine my relief.

Going over both plays in my head while running, they become one. Little similarities bounce back and forth ... things I had not noticed. In case of emergency I have a pager in 2001, a cellphone in 2006. I have not run in two weeks, over two weeks. This makes me sad. It cannot be helped, there is no time. But my heart beats peaceably, my breathing is regular, I feel good. I feel very good.

Today is a full-day technical rehearsal. Multimedia is in a really good place, thanks to Mr. Josh. Did I mention he is designing two shows which open on the same day? I hope everyone appreciates that. Josh Brown is awesome.

Josh-hawk (not Josh) and the crew were taking care of lighting yesterday (I had something like a day off) and we put it all together today. That is some kind of good place to be.

Let it all out

Truly the longest summer ... in a very long time. (For the record, the summer of 1994 started in May and ended in November, but that is a long story for another time.)

There is too much to do and never enough time. We have these kids doing so much. I would fear the overprogramming thing ... only most of their neighborhood friends have been on vacation for a month. If we sent them outside to play, they would only sunburn and beat each other to death.

We go to the pool a lot, to cool down. Big pool summer. Both of my kids have learned to swim this year! The girl, suddenly, went from fear of putting her face underwater to moving, head-down, like a fish. And face-up, like a seal. The boy may not actually travel much distance, but he throws himself horizontal, face-down, and thrashes like hell for ten seconds at a time, going about a yard. I am so proud of both of them.

The pool is very different here and now than it was in my youth. I can only assume things got out of hand during the past. No radios, no music, no splashing, no dunking, no piggybacks. "What do they do?" Sarah-the-Caregiver asked before taking them there yesterday.

Marco Polo, of course.

My knees hurt when I left this morning. I can never run on the weekend, you might notice, so it has to be at 6 or 6.30 on a weekday. Eighty degrees! Not supposed to let off until at least Sunday. But anyway, my knees. Felt great for weeks, suddenly, my knees. Both knees. Ran anyway. Need to soak before the kids get up.

Too late.

Make me beautiful

I wore the wrong shoes. Just didn't notice, these are the last pair. And right now I am feeling it. Race in four days. Bad news.

But what a day ... three hours driving in a car in the rain, and I can't believe I ate that entire Hartzler's Cow Pie sundae. Time for a run. Big time for a run.

Unlike races in real cities, however, you will not be able to receive my splits via email this year because the system crashed. It's Wednesday, but they know now that the system will not be fixed by Sunday. Because in this town, we cannot fix things.

Met with fellow racers Steven, Nathan and Annie today! Steven is worried about his left knee. Hey, join the club! SHowed off some stretches, weight bearing exercises, and pressed the old-fashioned joys of ice, warm baths and megadoses of pain reliever.

From Brian: Fish Oil Benefits

Did I mention how emotional I got during my run in Sunday? I was actually weeping running through Cain Park. And I was listening to Ke$Ha. There was a reason for that, but it wasn't Ke$Ha. I am thinking of a show. I am thinking of changes, to this show, and to another show. Thinking of time. Of pictures. Of words.

No, I can't say more than that.

No, you can't take that away from me.

Since Sunday's run ... that night, my right knee was unbearable, hobbling everywhere. My left knee felt marvelous.

I have been ravenously hungry, and eating non-stop. Real junk, too - I think in the last three days I have eaten at least a dozen cookies, a piece of cake, two candy bars, some small bags of chips - it's sick.

I began weeping uncontrollably while chatting with my wife in the kitchen because I was overwhelming with the realization that I really love running.

We're headed for disaster

As I was approaching Mayfield Road, it began to rain. I hadn't thought of that. It never rained very hard, just a light, pleasing rain.

Except it got my clothes wet. One word: nipples. Did I think to wear band-aids? Yes. Did I actually do that? No. And I am bleeding.

My knee felt good today, my left knee. But I wore my brace to make sure. And it felt good and strong all through the run. But my right knee was sore by the time I made it to my turnaround, and made the return journey less than pleasing.

But I made it. I walked around the Indian Cultural Garden. I read all the plinths. And I looked admiringly into the face of the old man. What powerful, thin legs. I need new flip-flops. And I was inspired to start practicing yoga.

I ran ten miles. God willing, I will be there with you in two weeks.

Distance: 10 miles
Temperature: 66ยบ
Weather: light rain
Weight: 158.5 lbs.

Reckoning

Two weeks ago, Rachelle pointed some kind of light gun at my knee. I try not to pass judgement on things I don't actually know anything about, but the idea of an "energy light" to heal damaged cells ranks up there with magnets and low electrical current. These things may work, but so does the placebo effect.

Well what can I say. My left knee, which has been troubling me for months, stopped hurting. Until this morning. I ran 3.25 yesterday, but I have run a few times since April 17. This morning I was stiff and sore. A trip to Rachelle's may have helped my back (I understand massotherapy) but I am not sure another light treatment did much to help. It aches beneath the patella, in front of and below my knee. She gave me tape to use, which does provide a surprising amount of support. I have extra for tomorrow.

Tomorrow. In two weeks is the Cleveland, and I have yet to do anything close to a long run. Tomorrow I will attempt to rise at 5 am, and make the ten-mile round trip to Gandhi and back. The playlist will be music from the year 1980 - that means tunes from Animalympics. If I can accomplish this without doing permanent damage, I will attempt to run 13.1 miles on the 16th. If not, well, you have your answer right there.

Psycho

Following my last run (which was almost a week ago, you'll notice) I thought I felt swelling in my left knee. And I got very, very upset. I kept feeling and checking my knee. Is that fluid under the tissue? Yes, definitely. No ... it feels that way on the right knee. Wait, my knees are bent differently, even them out, how does that feel? Is that spongy? Is that?

I couldn't tell what was my knee, and what was the sensation of skin, bone and muscle under my fingers. What is that pain, why do my knees feel tight? What if it blows up again, will Dr. V. be mad at me? Think I am a moron for continuing to run?

He did say I could run. He did not say I could not run. He was wise, of course, not to tell me nothing else bad might happen. Who knows?

I saw R. for massotherapy and foot reflexology on Saturday. I told her about my knee, she put some kind of "energy light" onto it. Not a heat lamp, it wasn't hot, it was ... well, an energy light. I have no idea. And you know what? It worked.

I have not had time to run since last Thursday ... or I have been afraid to. A bit of both. Tomorrow Brian and I are doing the Earth Day 5K. Last year I tried to run really, super fast. It felt terrible, and I didn't even place, not even with, like five guys in my division. I don't run to win, I run to run. And tomorrow, I will be keeping up with Brian.

I had to leave real early

This is my son's favorite song, ever.

My knees feel weak. There's been a lot of talk lately among my slower friends about stretching. And of late I have been feeling like I really really really should resume weight-bearing exercises for my legs and knees. I think all the muscle is gone and I am once again using only my cartilage for cushion. And I have a 13.1 mile race coming up. Will I smart? Or foolish.

Hmn. Let's check the record ...

Oh, and I remain exhausted. We are headed to Athens for the weekend, weather is going to be summery. Run Friday, run Saturday, run Sunday. And lots of sleep inbetween.

Remarkable

Friend Tim P. is running the Twin Cities Marathon as we speak. At the halfway point he was keeping a 12 min. mile - very respectable. I could stay in no longer, I needed to get out.

Slight cramp in my right knee partway through, walked for a bit, kept on. Twice a week? Can we shoot for three?

Had an epiphany right at the start, it made my day. That's for all you writers out there, I ran. I wrote, in my head. I will have half a first-draft in good stead in two hours.

How did we spend the morning? Winterizing the house, ending summer, playing. Later I will sketch. This wasn't supposed to be a remarkable day, suddenly it is.

Listening to: PODRUNNER Classic - Surge (144 BPM)

Distance: 3.25 miles
Temperature: 55ยบ
Weather: cool, awesome.
Weight: 157 lbs.

UPDATE: Josh pointed out the last sentence of the first paragraph is misleading. He thinks I actually ran the Twin Cities Marathon with Tim - and that I dropped out halfway through. What I meant was, "Tim's effort has impressed me on this cold fall afternoon - I could no longer stay indoors, I needed to get out onto the streets of Cleveland Heights myself."
