Light a fire, hit and run.

Actual work conversation yesterday.
What a decade it has been. The kids are quick to point out it wasn't a great world when Obama was president, but at least there was a certain degree of accountability and considerably less bullshit.

Or not. I don't know. I suppose this was inevitable. It's going to be quite the Semiquincentennial this summer.

Here is some good news. I did not believe I would have much going on this calendar year, as far as my writing was concerned. But I have produced a commission (which will be performed tomorrow), there will be a first public reading in June, a remount of a fringe show at the end of October, and this week's big surprise, the publication of one of my very favorite scripts!

Sweet serotonin rushes.

The old man is not well, his eye is ulcerated and requires medicine and attention. Friday night he woke me up several times, to get under the covers which is nice except when he gets in and out of bed.

Twenty years ago, on April 10, 2006, I was lamenting the fact that, though I had taken a running kit with me to London, I hadn't done any running. By that time in my life, I had gotten used to -- nay, looked forward to -- taking a run in New York City. Not that I had done it a lot, but I did a few times when I was there for the 2004 NY Fringe.
"Ran roughly four miles. Man, Sunday it is a free-for-all, everyone running in every direction. Keep your head up."
Millennium Bridge, 2006
But that was because I was squatting at an apartment two blocks from the Central Park on the Upper East Side. I knew my way around that part of New York.

Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie
In spring 2006, we were staying at my brother's place in Battersea. I had not yet started using mapping programs to find my way around unusual places. The next year, when we returned for the I Hate This tour, I took a run in London and another in Plymouth. I had learned how to prepare.

This weekend, I am preparing by running at home on Sunday morning, and then hopefully on Tuesday, so I don't need to run in Cincinnati at all.

The other night, when I had a migraine, I had a new experience. Not an entirely unfamiliar experience, but a very disconcerting one. I kept hallucinating. Waking dreams.

I would try to drift off, I would try to clear my mind, which is difficult to do when your head aches, and I would suddenly, very suddenly, be in some place, with something troubling to do. Like, I had spilled things I needed to pick up, or that there was something to find.

But I wasn't asleep. Or I was, for that one moment, and then just awake enough to tell myself, "This isn't real, you are in a bed, forget this, rest and sleep." And then it would happen all over again. It was horrible

So, we have been doing the every other day thing for more than a year. Pretty incredible. I am proud of me.

There are things that I have had on my schedule for months which have been brought to a kind of conclusion. The reunion. The commission. I should feel a sense of relief, and in a way, I do.

I'm also really tired. So is the wife. I guess this is what life is now. Maybe it always has been.

I hope this works out. Cardio.

I don't know if I have ever recorded this, but it is a remarkable phenomenon which has occurred many, many times at the very beginning of an outdoor run, but is forgotten by the time it has concluded.

It only happens out of doors, if it is particularly windy. A single tear will fall from my left eye. One tear, just once, and always and only from my left eye. Why is this?

Finally remembered to make note. Took long enough. Anyway, back to the gym.

Twenty years ago, on February 14, 2006, I noted how I felt running would prolong my life. I said that I hoped our elder child to be "older than this before I die." I was thirty-seven then. They are now twenty-three. So I just need to hang on another fourteen years.

Here, take my shirt and just go ahead and wipe up all the sweat.

Happy birthday!
What has Noom done for me, now that I have unsubscribed? I take the stairs, every day, all the time. I drink more water. I am consistent in exercise. I am much more aware of hat I eat, how I eat, when I eat, what inspires me to eat, and how I choose not to eat things -- and to enjoy the shit out of what I do eat.

Just keep breathing (if you can).

Matt Smith as Patrick Bateman
For some weird reason, I have become aware of American Psycho: The Musical by Duncan Sheik. I mean, I knew it existed. I just had no interest. Love the film directed by Mary Harron, never read the book. Saw a clip on Colbert, I think. It was a long time ago.

The Broadway production did not record an album. The original, London cast did. featuring Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) as Patrick Bateman. You can watch a poorly recorded phone video of the entire Broadway production online. I may have enjoyed it in the theater, I don't know. But some of the tracks have only just recently gotten under my skin.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 29:12
Pace: 9:25

Just watched the Colbert clip. It is devoid of the humor which is evident in the performance video, and features a bland number ("Selling Out") that was added to the Broadway run. I have been having heel pain, a brief self-diagnoses suggests it is Achilles tendinitis. In the old days (last week) you would look something up and be provided possible websites to consult, now Google's AI just gives you a regurgitation from a number of sources with no indication of what those sources are or if they are accurate.
Achilles tendinitis is an injury of the Achilles tendon often caused by overuse. The Achilles tendon is a band of tissue that joins the calf muscle at the back of the lower leg to the heel bone.
That does accurately describe my symptoms -- what they are, and where they are. It goes on:
Achilles tendinitis is common in runners and middle-aged people who play sports only on the weekend.
What the actual fuck, AI?

Got my head in the sky and a heart like a hurricane.

And we're back. Following a thirty-hour day (literally) we arrived home, managed to put a few things together before passing out. We saw so many beautiful things together, and as a family. It was just what I wanted.

And I only gained one pound.

Also, came home to find a new pair of shoes. We'd bought these the day before departure, but I didn't want to break them in on the trip. Why? Because they are eleven and a half. Yes, a half size larger than my last pair -- which were a half size larger than the pair before that.

Either my feet have gotten two sizes bigger in the twenty years since I began running in earnest, or I have always been cramming my feet into shoes that are too small. I think it's a bit of both.

Every day I prepare the same breakfast, a bowl of fresh fruit (mostly berries) with granola and (plain, nonfat) yogurt. This fruit place opened a year or two ago in my office and every time I go there I can hear my mother's voice saying, "You know, you could just get fruit from the grocery store."

I used to think, what's the point, it's (the fruit) just going to go bad in the fridge before I eat all of it. But not if you have it every day.

And also, it's like Seth Brundle, doing the Einstein thing, where he's got, like seven of the exact same outfit so he doesn't waste any time thinking about what to wear. Morning time I am not in the headspace to decide what to eat. And it's fresh and tasty and never disappoints.

Yesterday, I mixed in a tablespoon of sunbutter. Can you imagine?

You make my feet move.

#HandsOff, motherfucker.
Still using the Noom, which is, and has been, primarily a repository for my daily intake. The difference between that and this blog, where I would occasionally keep track of what I was eating, the app tallies the calories.

But it's not like I am "calorie counting" as they used to say. I just know what I've eaten, so far, what I intend to eat, and I stay honest. The other day I had a big meal from a fast food place, that didn't prevent me from having popcorn after dinner while I watched TV. I was just aware.

And I have been consistently 160 pounds for over two months. I wonder if I could just stay here.

Run while you can, baby.

We have hit a roadblock, or at least it feels like one. The exercise, the commitment continues, but it doesn't feel like it did before. I think that is because I am longing for the temperatures that will take me outside. But at least I have a subscription to the inside, to keep me going.

And I maintain. The wife gets pizza, I have one slice, and a healthy dose of salad. Snacking is minimal, and measured -- and enjoyed.

An Arthur Treacher's opened in town yesterday -- not an April Fool's joke, and honest-to-god Arthur Treacher's opened across from the high school. I hope to visit that soon.

My year playlists are long. For 2013, it's 4 hours and 17 minutes. The lists from my teen years are four time that long. They're played on shuffle, you may assume, but I try to start with a song that I have added since last year. Every year, new songs, for every year.

I've said this before but it bears repeating. Doing this, going through every year of my life, year by year, has motivated me (more than I might have otherwise) to keep up with contemporary music. And that keeps my young and healthy and much less of an asshole about music than guys my age usually are.
