Hug you to death.

Things are changing, question mark? She is coming home this weekend. And I feel as uncertain about that as I have been about her being away.

It will be a dry fall, and I am looking forward to that. It's been a long and lonely summer. Yeah. Lonely. And I have been unhappy about that. I have done my best to take care of myself. Now I know I can take care of myself, Big deal, who cares. Didn't think I wanted that.

Thank you for holding me.

August begins in earnest. I am currently alone. And yet, I am booked. It has me a little freaked out, honestly. But maybe it is a good thing. I have plans, I have so many plans. I am also adrift, I don't know what to think, or how.

I need more sleep. Even more sleep. There is never enough sleep.

And I will continue to run.

Spent several hours last night with a good friend, sweating it out on the side porch. I put out the main bulb, so it was all pepper lights and candles, and as our talk continued, the sun went down and our cups refilled, her face began to change. It's always so incredible when that happens. It was a very good night.

I do have friends. Sometimes I know where to look to find them.

A velvet sweat.

It has been rainy and cool. I am happy
with this. The kids make trips into town to get groceries and ice cream, while we lounge around the cabin.

I am working on Metropolis. I am reading the text again, and creating a synopsis. Of course, I could just feed the text (which is available online) into ChatGPT and have a synopsis of whatever length I dictate, and immediately. I could stick my head in the oven.

The other day I learned that Duncan Bowen Black, author of Eschaton, is a runner. He wrote a short piece (they're all short pieces) about how AI summaries have been forced onto his running app, and how they are all non-specific but always super positive, which is not only useless but terribly unhelpful.
"I'm always doing the right thing, somehow. Long and fast? Smashed it! Short and slow? Perfect recovery run! It never says, That was a shit run, pal."

Total bummer, however ... the eldest and their partner have had their flights canceled not once (Tuesday) but twice (today). They have decided to cut their losses and are making no new arrangements. This is due to global climate change (see: Canadian wild fire smoke, tornados and flooding in NYC) and the fact that airlines are horrible.

It seems my weaknesses just keep going strong.

Hey! Me, too!
We settle in. We relax. Long mornings on the deck. No rush. A day can last a long time, if you use it well. Or don't use it at all. The cousins visit, we stay right where we are. We drink, a lot. It's cool.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 32:29
Pace: 9:17

Monday we planned a brief excursion to Damariscotta, it took the day. That's how we roll, out by ten, or ten-thirty, back around three-thirty, then a nap. We did discover a new favorite spot, King Eider's Pub, so that's news. Our old favorite place there, the one with the Bigfoot iconography, that's under new management. Alas.

The evening spent drinking and reading. Oh, and we visited the library. All good.

Except our other child had their flight bumped two days because of air quality. That's life in the 21st century. Not happy about that.

Feeding the rhythm.

Did it, though?
Forty years ago, we were playing at being adult. What does it do to one's immature psyche to be made to believe that just graduating high school is the most monumental thing you have ever accomplished, and that you are an adult and now you need to do adult things? Which is to say, nothing at all. To not have to think about school. To go out, to dance, to have sex.

Not to work, to learn adult skills like cooking, cleaning, accounting. Or how to properly care about other people, to care about anyone but yourself.

I was so in love. I felt freer than I ever had or ever would again. I was lost in the stars.

We indulged this weekend, it was a mania. Got high, saw lots of shows, drank lots of beer, ate lots of fried food. Yesterday, I had the chance to decompress. The wife and I watched Novelle Vague and Kansas City.

We have listened to the Kansas City soundtrack for thirty years, but never seen the film. The soundtrack is better. One thread of the narrative is a young person, a teenager, who has taken the train from Joplin to Kansas City to go to a maternity hospital. They don't spell it out in great detail, but it is made evident that there are many maternity hospitals in Kansas City, and that young women and girls come from all around to give birth there, for adoption.

What if I had seen that film thirty years ago? Would I have made the connection? Would it have made a difference to my father?

Managing the rest of the season should (should) be a breeze. A more flexible schedule, and the opportunity to cross-train. To maintain. There are also vacation moments, which should not necessarily be taken as a chance to pack fried food stuffs.

"I didn't know much about Shakespeare before I came here" Arif said. "I'm learning so much about him and his work everyday. Each time I read something that Shakespeare has written, I get the feeling that I understand everything that he is saying. The next day, though I discover something else in those same words that I didn't know the day before. And the next day, one more thing."

Georgio Moroder's experiment in reviving this classic silent film has dated somewhat, the film is timeless but the songs aren't -- with the exception of his own instrumental themes. Machines is a very important track to me.

Machines is 1984. It is the future. It is Metropolis. It's iconic. Timeless.

It's not just that we returned to drinking, those those calories are real. It's the junk food that comes with it and I ate a lot yesterday, a Saturday. I even had a stress dream about driving into a McDonald's (not like, crashing into it, I was driving my car down an aisle) that had a build it yourself burger bar that was utterly disgusting.

It gets worse, after building my burger I accidentally dropped it into a wastebasket and fished it out. That is how bad my subconscious feels about the dinner I had last night.

Run into you sometimes.

Oof. Some days I can feel my age. And then I ask myself, have I ever actually felt better than this? I have a hernia, that was thirty years ago. Thought I would need to wear compression pants the rest of my life, wore them about five years. What I learned was that if I gained weight (or wore boxers instead of briefs) I would hurt down there. So I try not to gain weight, and for the most part I haven't hurt down there in thirty years.

This is not a charade.

Forty years ago was a good summer. A very good summer, a special summer. My brother was home from college, he'd just graduated from college and was churning out resumes on a dot matrix printer from his Apple Macintosh. We bonded over Heineken, chips with good French onion dip and weed.

We watched Miami Vice reruns, Night Flight, and Dave Letterman. I learned about new artists, or new to me, anyway. The Cure. The Smiths. New Order. Fishbone. We watched strange videos, and laughed our asses off.

Live Aid, Back to the Future, Thunderdome, we made one DDT-V episode for July, and a second one for August, a clip show based entirely on the advertisements (that one was my idea). We had gone to Maine early in the season for my grandfather's 90th birthday, so the rest of the summer stretched out madly.

I was cited on my seventeenth birthday for trespassing in the Metroparks after dark (we had been playing assassin) and broke up with my girlfriend. I was ready to be a senior. And I was free.

How do we celebrate a holiday like Memorial Day? Regression. Our recent trip abroad put me in mind of what I was like when I was there, during the summer of 1984. I came home with a tranche of memories, and while I should focus on those that were positive, I fixate on those that were not. I was bullied. I also had the opportunity to be the worst of myself. I mean, I was a teenager. The music, however, was incredible.

Let's do this.
Sugary breakfast cereal no longer holds the magic that it used to. It's just so absent of real flavor and it's mostly just milk. It's just a vehicle for a lot of milk. And I don't really need milk, in my body, as a liquid, anymore.

You get so dizzy even walking in a straight line.

*sigh*
The boy has returned to school. We are on our own again. Summer has drawn, in its way, to a close. Still plenty of summer lovin' fun to be done.

This week has been arduous, however. The move was exhausting, surprisingly so, and took an extra day. I had a near migraine event on Monday night, which was held at bay not only by late night ibuprofen, but also Dramamine. I'm thinking that is a missing ingredient, one which not only quelled by impending nausea, but also knocked me out.

But I have also had the runs, since last week. I have no explanation for this, except perhaps for some kind of bug? Lack of yogurt consumption? Really, I forget how I have been enjoying yogurt for breakfast for the past year or so. I think going a couple days off messes with my system.

Let's see what happens now that we are home and having a regular breakfast diet.

Woke late, almost nine o'clock. I was expecting to be woken up and served for Father's Day, but the wife is ill so I rolled out to pick up last minute breakfast things and wash some dishes. But the boy prepared my bagel and I get to sit on the porch and relax and enjoy a beautiful morning.

There's work to be done, preparing for camp for the week, but not too much work. God, I was so wrecked by Thursday ... for many years, camp ended with our leaving for North Carolina, and I am grateful that is not the case this season. I will miss the place (we didn't go last year, either) but I just want to hang around and work, for goodness sake.
