Flood's Cove: Run Seven

Twenty runs or more every month since March. That's some kind of record. I'm not even training for anything.

One more in before we leave tomorrow. It's been a beautiful week, lots of sun, some really hard rain, too, but that's kept the temperatures reasonable. And by reasonable, I mean perfect.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 35:12
Pace: 10:03
Route: Martin Point Run
Temperature: 73°
Climate: sunny & nice
Mood: good

Last run, slow run. The past two nights I have not slept well, in spite of it being "good sleeping weather." Last night I woke up all the time, I have bedsores on both hips from how firm this mattress is. And you need to sleep to run well.

Next run, probably Thursday, in Cleveland Heights. I will miss the smell of the sea, of the pine, and the relatively low humidity.

Flood's Cove: Run Six

Wild night last night. I took some of the kids to Freeport to check out L.L.Bean and to buy some new fishing tackle. Driving home to rain came and we had a seriously heavy downpour.

Meantime, friends joined us from Avon, the cabin now holds ten. Around nine o'clock the power went out and it seemed like everyone got a little weird. I just wanted to go to sleep, it had been a very long day. Fortunately the power came back and suddenly everyone disappeared, either to their rooms or for a walk in the diminished downpour.

And I went to sleep!

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 33:47
Pace: 9:38
Route: Martin Point Run
Temperature: 69°
Climate: sunny & nice
Mood: good

Cooler mornings now, worthy of a fire. My diet has gone off the deep end. The past three days, breakfast has consisted of either birthday cake or my wife's third place-winning entry in the pie contest.

First time contestant! Third place! So proud!

Anyway, today we return to fresh fruit, yogurt and granola.

2023 Friendship Day 5K

We're eating all the food, you know. Thursday night we had fried clams at Jameson's and their great onion rings. Also, a burger on Squirrel Island. Also, carrot cake for breakfast, because it was my motherfucking birthday on Wednesday.

The weather turned hot on Friday. At home, it was much worse. What will happen?

30th Annual Friendship Day 5K
Start: 7:50 AM
Official Time: 28:04.79
Pace: 9:03
Place Overall: 30/46
Place Mens 50 - 59: 4/5

Friendship 5K? Not an actual 5K, more like 3.03 miles. But a great run with the eldest. We paced each other pretty well. Beautiful morning. Now — pancakes!

Flood's Cove: Run Four

Sleeping exclusively on my right side for two weeks last year, recovering from eye surgery, I injured my right shoulder. The pain lasted several months, and I began doing upper body exercises in an effort to build up strength in those muscles.

Apparently I have succeeded. I didn't bring any free weights on vacation with me, but I think I'll be all right until I get back. Or maybe I could just find a nice sized rock to swing around.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 32:58
Pace: 9:25
Route: Martin Point Run
Temperature: 72°
Climate: overcast

Had a lovely birthday yesterday. Went to Damariscotta for a brief shopping excursion, and to get ice cream from Round Top. The niece made spaghetti Bolognese, the wife a delicious carrot cake. The cousins were over, and we even caught the match.

The kids have decided to just risk it on Saturday -- but they do want to participate. The 1 mile short haul is at 7:00 AM, the 5K long haul is at 7:50. They will decide on the day if they want to do one, the other, or both.

Listening to Sinéad O'Connor this morning.

Lazy mornings, yet stressful. I would like to do a little more storyboarding, some writing work, while I am here. Because the work pleases me. Hard to do when I am expected to be cordial. What else is new?

Run with the eldest today, mostly ran, walked some. Made it all the way out to the end of Martin Point Road and back.

The plan is to run the 5K this weekend, and we all brought the shoes for it.

Flood's Cove: Run One

First run from the cove. The boy came with, but soon pulled something in his calf and headed back. Made two miles, saw an old, once empty house being propped up, perhaps to add a basement or some kind of sold foundation.

Most of these places were built without, I am constantly amazed by the engineering required to lift something so old and awkward without breaking a pane of glass.

Yesterday I came across a video Josh made to promote And Then You Die at the NY Fringe in 2009. It included footage from the Big Box performance that January.

Looking for something I'll never find.

Powderpuff is canceled.
Second shingles vaccine yesterday. My shoulder is sore, but that is all, and that is good. I did not care to be feverish and unwell today (though I guess I still could be.)

Also, did a blood draw and apparently I am in the acceptable range for a person my age. This is an improvement over last August. I think.

What is troubling to me is how depressed I got last night. I was at an event where I suddenly felt entirely irrelevant thought that may simply be reality hitting me in the face. What have I done? Is any of it relevant? I feel like I have been loud and meaningless.

Probably a good thing few people read this blog. It's one of the few spaces where I choose to be honest.

I will be your daddy.

Thank God for George Michael, and especially for the single "I Want Your Sex" which was first released on the soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop II in May 1987.

It's not the best rack on his first, upcoming solo record, Faith. But is was a quirky, frenetic, deconstructed bop which enraged a lot of silly people. I got the "extended CD single" that summer and wore that fucker out.

Over my high school years I had developed a terrible case of acne on my chest, back and shoulders. At the end of 1986 I was single again and miserable, I thought I'd never date again. The year 1987 started with my first one-night stand, which was completely humiliating.

However, I was soon prescribed Accutane. My skin cleared up, and with it a degree of physical self-confidence that no man deserves, and for a short time, I became a player. George Michael wrote my songs. Well, George and Robert Smith.

Maybe I will try running to some Cure albums next.

Forest Hill Walk

I'm dizzy pretty much all the time now. I just deal with it and try not to fall down.

And I am out of sorts. Can't run yet, it hurts too much in my side. I tried to run last night and stopped, which was depressing. The wife reminded me, I can walk! I did that last summer when I was recuperating from my operation, and that was very helpful.

What the hell's got into you?

But, okay. Also. On Sunday, at Cedar Point, the first ride we went on was the Scrambler. And almost immediately my wife leans into me (see: centrifugal force) and my arm is stuck for a moment between the edge of the car and my side, and I feel this pinch in my ribs.

Not a pop, not a crack, right? Just a sudden twinge of pain. And I've had it for the past several days. Not debilitating, just ... there. What is that?

Okay, oof. That was. I set out for a two mile run, but decided almost immediately to make it one mile. The pain in my side made it hard to take deep breaths, which are necessary for running. Not sure how to handle this. A few days off? Not sure.

I want to hit that high.

My summertime love.
Big Cedar Point weekend. A little on the decadent side, but I think it's the only time we go this summer. We've become huge summer fun people!

But also, on Monday, I developed a crushing headache which separated me from humanity for the entire morning and most of the afternoon. As I recuperated, I ate what seemed best to eat, which included a lot of fat and salt and stranger cravings.

This morning I feel like I am starting from the beginning again.

The truth is, Make It Big is a mediocre follow-up. Fantastic knows what it is, a party record, and it is perfect. This is a Frankenstein's monster of an album, half of it is outstanding. I don't even need to point out which songs those are.

But "Heartbeat", "Like a Baby", "If You Were There" and "Credit Card Baby" are so light and poppy just fill in your own metaphor about a soap bubble here.

Actually, I love "Like a Baby." That is a good song, pure Sophisti-pop. I wish for an EBTG cover version. But still, those four are not my favorite songs for running.

Make It Big - Wham! (1985)
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
Everything She Wants (Remix)
Heartbeat
Like a Baby
Freedom (Long Mix)
If You Were There
Credit Card Baby
Careless Whisper "Wham! ft. George Michael"

Bonus Track: I'm Your Man

Yeah, "Credit Card Baby" is ... not good. They know it, too. The song just stops.

I mean, another song about a materialistic lady-person? You already nailed that on the second track.

Young Guns (Go For It!)

This album did not hit in America, though the song "Young Guns (Go For It!)" did make it into the soundtrack of the movie Sixteen Candles. It should be no surprise. If I had heard it when I was fifteen, I would probably have dismissed the thing outright. Which is a pity because I do love it so.

Why do I love it so? Because a girl explained to me why I should, which is the only reason I have come to enjoy anything in this world. I was raised to be so cynical, so judgmental (where did that come from? not from my parents) that things just fun or silly were not to be trusted.

Also? Homophobia. Just fucking stupid. You miss so much bring a bigot.

But this is the thing. We worshipped Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and they were straight up gay. In your face, as we used to say. And we loved it. Wham! was what we now call queer-coded; Andrew is straight, George claimed to be. But they were fey. They exhibited the same kind of character traits that I got bullied for, and so I told myself I wasn't into it.

This album has no business being this good.

Reading as I eat now, instead of the crossword. That becomes a way to avoid everything, the crossword. It's more challenging than Solitaire, I remember playing Solitaire all the time when I was seventeen. It was a way of avoiding the tedium of conversation with my girlfriend.

But reading, it feels so selfish. But it's so important.

Oh, Lord! Deliver us from the elements.

Album runs are inspiring, they encourage me to run further more often. I used to just listen to an album for as long as it took to run however far I wanted to run that day, whether I finished the record or not. This month I have been trying to time the run out to meet the duration of the album.

And there's all kinds of records I have done yet! I don't imagine I'll ever run out.

One I embraced in college, the first track founds its way onto mix tapes for at least two women I was interested in, perhaps more. "Human Alchemy" was a revelation for a young white man (wait, "we" did this?) though today the African drums makes it a bit cringey.

Also? You can stretch a metaphor too far. Oh, we're the real slaves ... to Capitalism! Yeah, no. Just stop.

"Ladybird" led act two of my production of Romeo & Juliet ("What, Lamb! What, Ladybird!") including a recorded intro from a WENZ DJ, as if that station ever played any deep cuts from anyone.
