Time to get real.

Right here, right now.
Alas, no more runs in August than in July. This time, due to illness.

COVID-19, bout two.

Tuesday (August 26): Thought I had allergies: tickle in the the throat, watery eyes
Wednesday: Following a horrid night's sleep (woke dozens of times) tested positive. Headache all day, pain across the eyes, cough, woozy, slept on and off all day, watched a lot of TV.
Thursday: Night sweats but an excellent night's sleep. Woke once or twice, sore throat, no head pain. Bit dizzy. Slight cough. And sputum, which is always rewarding.
Friday: Difficult night, coughs and pained throat. Active during the day, working remotely, taking calls. Sore throat much preferable to head or body aches, feeling grateful.
Saturday: Still testing positive. Good night's sleep. Haven't had a fever since Wednesday. Minor sore throat, little cough.
Sunday: Spouse in the throes, kept me awake most of the night. Otherwise, mildly stuffed up, high feeling in my chest.
Monday: Ears stuffed, throwing off my equilibrium. high feeling in chest.

The question is, should I run? Rehearsals resume tomorrow. Will exercise wipe me out ... or help clear my system? I have been resting for nearly a week and it's driving me to distraction. And it is specifically because my head is stuffed that I want to run, to clear my head.

I hope I do not regret this.

I made myself so strong again somehow.

But do we run when we have had a seriously messed up sleep schedule? Dropped the wife at the airport at 5:00 AM, drove home and got back into bed. So sleep has happened but I feel dizzy and weird.

Then again, I did have a flu shot and also a Covid booster yesterday! That may also have something to do with it. Okay, we're going with that.

Have you got enough gas?

Theater Camp is closed. I have been exposed to Covid. Also, there was an awful lot of movie theater popcorn available there. I don't know which is worse.

Day off from work, a reward for all of the work. Yesterday I sat down during the performance and realized that apart from that five minutes I spent eating two slices of pizza, I had been standing for the previous seven hours. Then I had to stand up two minutes later and didn't sit down again until I got into the van two hours after that.

"For the boys on MTV."

Home, again. Keeping my run on. This morning I am unmotivated specifically because I do not know what to listen to. I'm sure I'll come up with something.

Memories of Fall 2021, when the boy and I visited NYC. Photos pop up in the social media feed, and there are those photo books on the table, of the shed they used for outdoor pandemic dining. It was a time of great transition. It remains so.

Perfect day for a zombie run, gloomy and damp with a "dark and goth" playlist.

Shit is getting real, this app was created over ten years ago, but I have been re-introduced to Runner 8, who is suspicious of Runner 5 (me). She also has a persistent cough. She's had it long enough that it doesn't make sense that she is "turning gray."

But between the cough and her talk of a supposed, possibly entirely bogus vaccine which was distributed just prior to the collapse of civilization, it's quite timely.

Then she lets slip that she was bitten. So ... maybe the vaccine did work? Or maybe it prolongs the inevitable. We'll find out!

Moving in elliptical pattern.

Man. The sleep has been long this month. Eight hour sleeps, but this weekend they've been nine and ten hour sleeps, with no chemical intervention.

Got a kink in my ankle. It's lasted a day. Not something I like waking up with.

And so! Sleeping in, the time change, sore ankle, it all adds up to taking a day off from running! And well-earned, too.

Quite a weekend. Active, and stressful. Why stressful? Not sure. Perhaps because it was so active. And yet, I saw beautiful things. We had dinner out, saw a show at the CMA. I attended the premiere of a local film and last night, my son playing with a jazz ensemble.

Why stress? Is it stress? Or just the feeling of experiencing life and people in a post-pandemic world?

We are young. We run green.

Sunday (September 11)
: Began feeling symptoms, difficult night's sleep.
Monday: Took a Covid test. It was positive.
Tuesday: Another bad night's sleep, the day was better.
Wednesday: My wife's birthday, she tested positive. Happy birthday.
Thursday: Feeling more human. Minor sore throat, slight ear ache.
Friday: Finally a good night's sleep, still tested positive.

However, a weekend of special plans was off the table, had a complete emotional breakdown. I have had eye surgery, now Covid, I miss my family, I miss life, I miss my mother, my world is getting smaller and smaller instead of bigger and bigger and I am falling into despair.

Saturday: Went without Benadryl for bed, I still slept well but woke feeling worse than the day before.
Sunday (September 18): On the mend. Still weak, disoriented.
Monday: Still weak with minor congestion. Worried I will never feel normal again.
Tuesday: Another down day, achy head and listless body.
Wednesday: Took a short walk, felt good.
Thursday: Still muddled, pain in the head. Just want to sleep.

Took a walk, instead. A three mile walk on Thursday afternoon, like I did after my surgery, to keep up.  To get me through. Now it's cool, now it's breezy. Perfect running weather, and yet I am not running. But I am also not standing still.

Friday: Back to work. What do you know about that.
Saturday. Fell asleep the night before at eight. Woke at nine. Trimming one hedge in the yard rendered me exhausted and unmotivated for the rest of the afternoon.
Sunday (September 25): Easily wearied. Also, occasionally queasy.
Monday: Visiting actor-teachers in schools. Feeling next to normal.
Tuesday: Conducted a writing workshop for middle school students. I am on my feet.

This is a test.
Yes! Ran through the park, the only thing that hurt was how tightly I had wrapped my calf. Still, ati-inflammatory and ice.

Checked some times in the park for the new script, and did a FB Live test, to see how shaky the phone would be, holding it while running. How long someone can hold the camera up while running, that is a question. It won't need to be for too long. I mean, not very long. A little long.

I see my reflection as I slowly pass.

The fewer people, the fewer interruptions. The boy sleeps until noon, if I do not wake him to go fishing, as happened yesterday. The wife has her own business, writing, reading, meditating.

I have time to read as much as I like. We are under self-imposed quaratine, we are not (supposed) to visit other cabins, to go into the market (they deliver, which is very nice) let alone venture to other towns. Just as well, Camden, I hear is busy with shoppers, and the sidealks are so narrow. Ridiculous.

The wife gifted me with The Mirror and the Light back in March, and I have been an unresponsible reader with it. It is over 750 pages, a hefty tome. Authors tend to go long when they are trying to tie things up, but I have poor reading habits working days, even in quarantine, taking in a page or two a night before becoming drowsy. I have read perhaps a hundred or more since the week began.

The smell of the cove enfolds me this morning, sitting out on the new porch. There is no odor like it anywhere else in the world, not that I have enountered. Sea and tree and cut wood. I am privileged to be here, and I believe I am only now embracing my gift. Before it was not my choice.

Distance: 3 miles
Duration: 29:07
Pace: 9:42
Route: Martin Point Run
Temperature: 72°
Climate: overcast & breezy
Mood: all right

The Martin Point route is pleasurable, with its many rises and falls. As long as it is not too sunny (today it is not) and the breeze is mild it's downright idylic. See the chart for the elevation -- it is not a perfect mirror because I decided to stop at 3 miles, not for any particular reason except I was satisfied and wanted to walk a little bit.

I'm feeling jake.

Barnstable, c. 1974
More vacation, more time away. We return to the ancestral place of respite. We do not own this cabin it owns us. My great-grandfather actually rented the Defiance on the water, bringing his family here first a hundred and ten odd years ago. that cabin was raised this past year, rising sea levels have caused it to flood at spring tide.

I heard a story once that the old man coveted the Barnstable, and was in conflict with the renter here to finally secure his place on the schedule to have it for the summer. I do not know what this means. Whoever told me that story has passed.

The Barnstable, too, has received a pleasantly signifcant upgrade. The porch is new. No longer sagging forward, and with wide, open stairs now in the middle, rather than off to the side, providing more space to move around and a new, unobstructed view of the cove.

Barnstable, 2020
Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 34:28
Pace: 9:50
Route: Martin Point Run
Temperature: 77°
Climate: gorgeous
Mood: all right now

Running at noon, the morning clouds burned away. A bright and sunny run. Kayakers. Dog-walkers, one other runner. All more than six feet away.

We are three in the big house. The first time it has been in my own name. I never thought that would happen. Next year it will be different. We had plans t put mother to rest but no one else wanted to risk the journey, and that is fair. We can wait. There is always time.

Hey-hey-hello!

Last week the girl and I watched movies pretty much every night. She wanted to get her retro teen flick experience, so we viewed Back To the Future, Ferris Buller's Day Off and Clueless.

Also Sweeney Todd, which was far more gruesome than I remembered, but ah well. She knew what she was getting into. We also watched Hamilton a couple times.

I was surprised to find Party Girl available on Amazon, so we also watched that. Made the same year as Clueless and with less than one percent of that Hollywood film's budget (seriously, Party Girl was made for $150,000) it was a starring vehcle for 90s indie-queen Parkey Posey and though I only saw it once, I bought the soundtrack and that is a much-loved CD.

I wondered if it was available on Spotify (yes, we now have a family subscription to Spotify) and was first surprised to see that it was! And then that it was not -- but what I had found was a fan playlist including all of the songs included in the film, many of which are not available on the CD.

Anyway, that is what I am listening to on my beach runs this week. Imitate a cat puking.

Distance: 2 miles
Duration: 22:30
Pace: 11:15
Route: Topsail Island Beach
Temperature: 81°
Climate: dark clouds, spitting rain
Mood: all right

High tide is not the best time to run here, there is only a narrow strip of firm sand to run on, which is sometimes subsumed by surf (I am running in shoes so far) and to avoid all others on the beach, I am sometimes dashing up onto the sandy part. It is like ... well, it is like running in sand.

But it felt good. Two miles under these conditions, with the wind and the sand giving below my feet, is more like three miles. So much more effort. And it's beautiful.

The beach, for those who are interested, is not crowded. When we are on it, we are close to no one. And there is the constant wind. I am unconcerned about transmission in this place.
