Requiem for a twat.

Throwing Muses
The Grog Shop, 4/9/2026
This year has been unnecessarily stressful. I mean, you could say that reaching back to forever. But in these recent years I had relaxed into a certain mode, one which involved seeing movies on my own, reading more, cooking, that kind of thing. I need to get back to that. Because otherwise, I'm just watching videos on YouTube.

Am I still middle age? Or am I leaning senior? I'm cool either way. Whatever. You know.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 27:13
Pace: 8:46

Spring vacillates. Perfect temps in the morning, it will rain this afternoon. So we run.

Sometimes, often these days, I think about all the running. And that's not good. Because I think, God. That's a lot of running. And then I think, why am I doing this? It brings my enthusiasm down. Then I pull myself together and get out there, and I feel great. I feel great now, having run.

Folks think running is hard. But it's really just getting out there that is.

Where boys run free!

"Pride of Cleveland Suburb Soars for U.S. Hockey"
New York Times, 2/19/2026
The wife reminds me that I am often depressed (maudlin, low energy, etc.) this time of year. Yes, it is the anniversary of father's passing, but it's also just winter. The long, slow slog out of the cold, with no festival of lights, no time off or time with family to bring the cheer.

The Olympics have been fun to watch, Toni gave me that. I do not recall paying any attention to the Games prior to my life with her. The past two weeks I have just turned on the screen to watch whatever, skiing, curling, snowboarding, skating, and, of course, the hockey.

We had a hometown hero on our team this year, and they took the gold. Remarkable.

I need to resume the good habits. Too many puzzles, first thing in the morning. Today I wrote, which, I have to remind myself, is a form of exercise. Add a glass of water to the cup of coffee, first thing, as you write for 30 minutes. Good habits.

Come on with me cruising down the street.

Deep winter malaise. But I followed up on the Marlowe biography by picking up Doctor Faustus. Plays count as books, right? I gave myself a goal, to read twenty books tis year. For some, that's nothing, but for me it's a stretch. That's right, I don't read enough. Something no one else has ever said in the history of the world.

The year playlists will be through before I know it. I don't even know what 2025 is yet, apart from national chaos and much more personal creative hibernation.

At least, thanks to my constant but not overwhelming running schedule, a third of the year will have passed before playing the 2025 Playlist, so there will be (there already is) over thirty minutes of music there, so I can get at least a 5K in.

However, as is usually the case, it's not necessary a great list, but just the most recent releases from artists I am familiar with, which generally catch my ear first, before other tracks that have already been (or will eventually be) released have gotten my attention, from artists with whom I am not yet familiar.

Is this interesting? I do not know.

Did I drink too much? Am I losing touch?

Maintaining. That is the struggle. It's not like I dn't have a million things to do. But where is my desire? My fulfillment? Part of his malaise is due to the end of the semester, to be sure. But it also may be the impending high school graudation of my daughter. Who am I, what is my purpose, and what comes next?

The wife has been out of town for a few nights. I have been drinking too much. It's not because she is out of town, I'd be doing that, anyway. It's end-of-semester malaise, I know. But something else. One of the birds is soon leaving the nest. And what have I done? Where have I been? And where am I going?

At the very least, these questions generally keep me on the road.

Crack another cerveza.

I do not know where to begin, so I will just say I stopped running. That statement is as final as anything else. For twenty years, beginning on treadmills at a gym in early 1998 to the New York Marathon to happily exploring the streets of my city, to running with my children, I have been running several times a week.

I have been fat and I have been very thin. I have listened to contemporary music and I have been immersed in songs from the past. I have been injured, I have gotten better. I have always wanted to run, even when I didn't want to run, I wanted to run.

I haven't really felt like running lately.

Or maybe I have, I don't know. The sciatica/hip-and-ass thing has put me into a foul mood. If I run, I hurt. Easy as that. Hurt to sit at work, hurt to drive my car, hurt to sit i a theater and watch movies or theater. Not running, I do not hurt. At least, not often.

Also, I have been writing. Free-writing, every fucking morning. I mean, every fucking, goddamn morning I move a pen in my hand and write. And I clean house, I work and take care of my home and family. Taking solitary exercise time for myself no longer feels appropriate.

Oh, and I hate running at the gym. Hate is a strong work. It does not inspire me. It is not what I call running.

So, I have not made tracks in nearly two months. That's some kind of record. It's not a good one. I say all this but I am not okay with all of this. Turning fifty was not supposed to mark the end of my running days. I am supposed to run until I die. I have to run until I die.

Distance: 2.25 miles
Route: Hocking River Bike Path
Temperature: 58 degrees

It had occurred to me, in packing for the week, that I might run every day. Why not? I used to. What have I done instead? Worked on the draft of a new, commissioned work. Saw three movies. Spent long afternoons in restaurants with family, Cooked a dinner. Did a jigsaw puzzle with my wife.

Which of these, how many of these, should I have not done in order to make time to run? Any of them? How about none of them. No regrets.

Climate: damp but nice
Mood: determined?
Exercises: a little

The boy came with me, with a dirt bike, but I asked him to go on ahead. He's too big and strong to pace me -- he goes too fast. I had only planned to go two miles, but told him to wait for me too far out, I had to wave him back.

Starting out, my back hurt, that sorted itself out. I was just winded. I have gained weight. I will check in on New Year's, and resolve to slowly work back to 160. I assume that's twenty pounds. I haven't weighed myself in months.

Resolutions must be made. Big bad year ahead of us.

Neglected Entry

That time I entirely neglected to blog a run. Hasn't happened in over twelve years. Just didn't think of it. Just didn't care.

Today is Tuesday, September 25. Two days ago the boy and I went to the gym. He rode his bike and I ran, then as he did the treadmill at the rec center, I ran two more miles. Then we came home, and by that time I was exhausted. Not just tired, but my muscles were weary, my hip hurt.

Distance: a little more than four miles

Running the treadmill last week, I learned I do not like the treadmill. You must run a consistent speed, and that doesn't work for me anymore. I need to be able to slow down, when I want to slow down, and speed up when I want to speed up, without thinking about it. Keeping the pace consistent makes me shorten my stride, and that does not feel good.

Likewise, I feel that running with the boy riding his boke also does not work. He has longer legs now, he goes faster. And I go slower. I have to run hard to keep up. Not very hard, but harder than I would, you know?

Anyway, I haven't been so ambivalent about running since 2011. These things, they come, they go.

Chris and I planned a ten mile today. But it's in the thirties and forties today, and I am sick of it. Just sick of it. The radio played our song.

We resume. Like starting from scratch. But we've done that before. I cannot understand how I can move from a person who defines himself as a runner to one who does not.

I see runners on the street and think, I used to do that. Like that. That is different. I used to see a runner and think; Hey, I wish I were running right now. I no longer feel that jealousy. I don't feel anything about it.

Well, that's not true. I obviously feel something. I am surprised I have not felt physical fatigue, that my legs have not been aching from disuse. I feel fine. My belly is soft, I haven't gained any more weight but I certainly haven't lost any.

This morning, however, I felt motivated. I began rehearsing a solo performance which opens in a few weeks, it would be nice to work on my breathing. To feel fit. Even a little fit. It would be a good idea to move.

Gutaris Breeze (6000km To Amsterdam) - John Beltram

In the late 1990s I was given to melancholy and inspired by afterhours club music. The year 1999 gave me Moby's Play and Everything But the Girl's Temperamental. Sometimes I would hear an album in a store and ask what that album is and just buy it. I was shopping at High Tide Rock Bottom in late 1998 and they were playing this sampler of downbeat house music and I just had to have it.

Distance: 3.25 miles
Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 41°
Climate: cool

Why this album, this morning? Because I want a slow run. I wan to jog, and feel good about it.

It's still a favorite, though I'm not emotionally in sync with it any more. That last one I heard (that's half the album) by John Beltram actually made me break down in tears during the rehearsal process of Hamlet in spring of 1999. Like, bawling.

What am I emotionally in sync with these days? Anything?

Didn't look too good in shorts.

These are challenging days. My wife has spent a great deal of time the past month in Athens, while I have either been getting the kids to their events myself or with the aid of friends, and most evenings I have been doing that or taking care of household chores.

The last time I took an evening run, I was attempting to do that on top of everything else, and I made for a shitty running experience. I was tired, I was in pain, and we didn't have dinner until late. It made me very unhappy.

But I miss the action of running. I just shouldn't run so hard, I guess. I was unsatisfied with physical therapy. I have borrowed a roller, which is interesting, and seems to help. Most of all, I am simply not interested in exercise, which is depressing. Like, literally depressing.

Distance: 3.25 miles
Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 79°
Climate: hot & humid, but beautiful
Mood: anxious

Took almost an hour to get out. I thought it would hurt. It did hurt. And then it didn't. And then it did again. I ended sprinting, because a song came on to sprint to. To want to sprint to (it's not the one credited below.)

Friday night we saw My Friend Dahmer. Vincent Kartheiser plays a doctor who, in addition to almost becoming Jeffrey Dahmer's first victim, is a runner. Actually, it is because he is a runner that he is marked as a victim. Not that Dahmer hates people who run, it's just that he happens to run by the Dahmer house in Bath, Ohio.

The spot where Dahmer watches him is a road on a slight incline, so the doctor, Kartheiser, is laying it on to keep a steady pace. He's really striking the pavement with his feet. My nerve was stinging that night, I was favoring my right cheek in the chair (watching movies is not as much fun anymore) and I kept thinking how much that kind of exertion and impact hurts now.

But I got out. The wife is home now, she was a great encouragement to run. Now I have the rest of the night to write.

Not keeping track of weight anymore, not now. My consumption is an issue, yes, and I will try to take it easy there, but what I really need to do is to stop eating sugar. This rehearsal period was obscene, there were bags and bags of candy. People noticed, I couldn't keep my hands off it. And I am going to get sick and I am going to have long-term health problems and I am going to die early.

So I need to stop eating sugar.

We're slow to acknowledge the knots in our laces.

Running once a week? Sure, whatever. Truth, the mornings have been occupied with reading plays, and that has been exciting. This weekend, however, has been nothing but suck, as I have had a headache the entire time. Hate, hate, hate headaches. Too obvious? Fucking hate them.

However, it does mean I have been resting my hip, and I suppose that is a good thing, too. The question is, does rest make a difference?
