Now the party's over. I'm so tired.

Made it!
A long day of driving, many thanks to Ze's uncle Nick for providing us the truck. And I've learned so many things! How to attach a U-Haul trailer! How to drive a truck hauling a U-Haul trailer! All kinds of crazy things for a fifty-eight year old never to have done before.

Distance: 2:45
Duration: 24:29
Pace: 10:01

It turned into a late night, I don't want to go into the details. They are embarrassing. I had an existential crisis in the room I had rented for myself to stay in and asked our kid to pick me up to stay with them.

As a result, I got to help them put their bed back together, so I think it was a good thing. But that was hard.

Route: Humboldt Park Loop
Temperature: 76°
Climate: overcast, threatening rain
Mood: glad to be running

Songs For My Funeral
Avalon - Roxy Music
Pictures of You - The Cure
Dust in the Wind - Gabriel & Dresden ft. Molly Bancroft
All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow

Strange discoloration on my right forearm, like a bruise but it doesn't hurt. Weird. Bug bite? Been around a lot of different insects the past several days. Maybe I will develop superpowers. Or get sick.

Stretches: yes
Water: yes

Our child has landed an excellent first apartment in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. I headed out for a run, to see what the park is like, and noticed there were far fewer cars on the side of the street where we had parked the trailer. Sure enough, there were temporary signs posted that street cleaning is today. So, instead of taking it back after, we got ourselves together to return the thing right away. Another milestone.

Humboldt is a nice city park, the paths haven't seen some love in a long time. Lot of food trucks getting ready for lunch -- but then we had a tornado warning. I hope they were all okay.

Planks: TBA
Push-ups: yes
Sit-Ups: TBA

And that's it. Cincinnati, Athens, Chicago. Tonight I head for home, and there will be no one to greet me but the cats.

If you should die while crossing the street

I really don't like the cold. Even briefly, just these few days below freezing. I feel uncomfortable, unmotivated, though not (fortunately) unwell. Just a brief dip into the 20s, it's not much of a winter. But I'm not crazy about it.

Still got some new gear yesterday, new gloves and pants, ordered what I couldn't find in stores online.

Distance: 2.3 miles
Duration: 23:50
Pace:  10:20
Route: Horizon Loop (clockwise)
Temperature: 38°
Climate: bright & cool
Pavement: dry w/some patchy snow
Mood: tired

"Clockwise" for the Horizon Loop means I begin with a hill for about a quarter mile. Then it's downhill for the rest of the mile and then mostly flat. Today was the first day I have felt stiff and tired, but it's an evening run not a morning run, so there's your difference.

Half Marathon Training Week Eleven

No long run last week. I had thought today would be another less-than-ideal day. Rain was scheduled, mid-fifties.

Well, mid-fifties it was, but also beautiful, sunny skies. We went into the south side of the city, and picked up the Towpath, which we ran into Valley View.

Time was short, I have a full schedule today. But we put in some good miles, and had a great run.

The race is next week. Wish us luck!

Duration: 53:59
Route: Lee/Taylor/Monticello Loop
Temperature: 33°
Climate: cool and sunny
Pavement: clumpy with snow clumps

They let me lead this week, and I brought them around a lot of my usual places, including by the high school and down Taylor Road.  I even showed them my house ... but had left my key at the rec center where we met.

Stretches: yes

Hey, I wrote a blog post about watching Pretty In Pink for the first time. Check it out.

I got stars in my beard.

I'm Doctor Strange.
Went a little nuts last night. We went to see a movie, just the wife the boy and I (the girl was at a party) and between the three of us consumed two buckets of popcorn a giant soda and a cup full of Mike n' Ikes, and then the four of us had Chinese food after.

We were driving to pick up dinner and the wife spied this guy in his winter exercise things, chugging up the street in the dark.

"There's one hard-core runner," she observed.

A pause.

"So what am I, some kind of dork?"

Distance: 3.35 miles
Avg. Pace: 9:01
Duration: 30:13
Route: Neighborhood Run

Thought it would be a relatively brief run, still well below freezing, snow on the ground. But I started as I suggested yesterday, taking the neighborhood side streets as a warm-up, beginning my run with an uphill climb followed by a pleasant descent, and then again on the next street.

Instead of repeating this, I decided to return to the block, circling it not once, but twice. Without realizing it I had gone over three miles when I had imagined it was closer to two.

Pavement: slippery with snow
Temperature: 14°
Climate: cold
Mood: decent

The pace is deceptive, I was working overtime to keep my balance and to keep my feet on the slippery surface while also keeping it swift.

Baseline: 174 lbs.
Today: 170.5 (+0.5)
Goal: 170 lbs.
Ideal: 165 lbs.

There are a few years for which I have surprisingly few songs on the running playlist, and 1971 is one of those. Less than two hours of music for running, most years from the late 60s and early 70s have over three hours of upbeat tracks.

Of course, I wasn't particularly aware of music at that time, so these are songs I have come to know and appreciate during later years. This, in comparison to those years where I was cognizant of what was on the radio or television. A year like 1983 has over thirteen hours of uptempo songs.

Recent years will have fewer songs because I have not accumulated everything that gets released that I enjoy, coupled with the fact that I don't have decades of recordings on CD to have culled. But again, strangely I have far fewer songs from the year 2014 than any other year in recent times, also less than two hours, unlike 2016, say, for which I already have well over two hours of running songs.

Did 2014 suck as a year in dance music, or is it just me, did I suck in 2014? I didn't run as much, that is clear.

May the road rise with you.

Average intake (yesterday) looks like this:

Morning coffee (cream, no sugar)
Breakfast: Grape Nuts with a tablespoon of cream, heated with dried cranberry and raisins, small number of salted almonds, mixed with a container of Greek yogurt.
Late morning coffee (cream, no sugar)
Lunch: Sunbutter & apple butter on whole wheat, carrot sticks, grapes, and a brownie.
Evening: Tea (milk & sugar) - no alcohol
Snack: small amount of popcorn (salt, butter)
Dinner: Mixed greens with apples, grapes and marinated chicken w/Italian dressing

Distance: 3.55 miles
Avg. Pace: 8:22
Duration: 29:48
Route: Forest Hill Loop

Yesterday I was sore. My body ached in many places, and that was strange. My posture was terrible. I felt myself leaning forward, not standing straight. Leaning forward is good, emotionally, walking down the hall not so much.

Last night would have been a night for running perhaps. Instead I sat and read, because I do not read enough. I listened to the girl play violin, because I have not had the opportunity to do that for a while.

Pavement: wet w/puddles
Temperature: 43°
Climate: light rain
Mood: anxious, but determined

There was a lit Christmas tree on the island in the park. Brisk, rainy run. Light rain and not cold. Very pleasant, actually. Maybe a little over dressed -- I wear a T-shirt over a long sleeve tee to keep my earphone cord under control, even with a jacket, it has an annoying habit of sneaking into my sleeve.

Keeping up.

The boy wanted to take one of those eight mile runs through Uptown, unfortunately that was before I knew bicycles are prohibited in Lake View Cemetery. We could head down Forest Hills Boulevard and through East Cleveland to Uptown, and maybe next time we will.

Distance: 5.15 miles
Avg Pace: 8:30
Duration: 43:49
Route: Boulevard-Noble Loop

Not as hot as last time, but still hot. A lot of gradual inclines and he, himself, took them easily on his bike, keeping my pace much higher than I probably would on my own, in this heat.

Sometimes he will tell me about something he is very interested in, and we will speed up and I will check out as my breathing increases, I have to remember to ask him to slow down a bit so I can breathe and think.

He's much bigger and stronger than when we took these runs together last summer.

Got a kink in my ankle. Ouch.

Temperature: 77°
Climate: bright & hot
Weight: 166 lbs.
Mood: good

After the run, the boy was telling his sister about the route, and about how I let him ride in the side streets, but only if he learned and practiced his hand signals. He's so proud of the things he accomplishes.

2016 Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon

That was utterly ridiculous. Ridiculous, and in its way entirely awesome.

Official Time: 1:41:21
Avg. Pace: 7:43

Place Men 45-49: 14

Previous Best: 01:43:35 (Cleveland 2010)

The morning was ominous. The forecast was perfect in its awfulness -- upper thirties and rain. Rain, everything will get wet, especially the feet. Upper thirties is exactly the temperature where I could wear long pants or shorts. Rain and wind means my legs will freeze, long pants just suck.

I decided to go with the shorts, long-sleeve shirt with a short-sleeve over it, gloves ... I would wear a rain jacket and my pajamas as long as possible before dropping off my gear bag.

And the toe separator. Introducing something foreign into your shoe before a long run doesn't sound like a good idea, but maybe it was the weather but this old man was feeling a pain in his bunion.

Stepping out of the house it began to snow. Yes, today is May 15. In a little over a month it will be summer. However, for now, we have snow.

Chris and I met at the garage and walked over to the Q. It seemed like the worst was past, it was misty but not rainy. I had memories of how cool it was last fall before Twin Cities, and the morning just got better and better. This is not, however, how nature always works.

We found our pace group. The goal was an hour forty-two. I did not tell Chris that I hoped to beat my previous, I didn't want him to encourage me to go on without him if he started feeling it somewhere along the line.

Long story short, the weather became increasingly ridiculous. There was rain. There was sleet, there was more snow, and yes, there was hail. Hailstones. Lots of hail.

This is the first time I have ever run a long race with a partner, and it was really great. I mean, seriously, I do not believe either of us would have gone as fast, or even finished, without each other's good cheer and support. If I had been alone I would have been entirely miserable, I can tell you that.

However, we crack each other up, and were riffing with great skill until about mile ten when our chatter noticeably slowed. We succeeded in keeping up with the pace group (7:49) for most of the run, and it was at about mile nine that I felt were were slipping behind, and made an effort to catch up. Soon after we were both feeling it, though neither would admit it. It was all very positive.

The most amusing part of the route may have been the decision to take Train Avenue. I mean, really? You people won't send the marathon into the east side neighborhoods, but a dismal, chuckhole cratered wasteland is good enough for the tourists?

We started in on all the real estate possibilities of the hip new neighborhood soon to be referred to as Downtown Train.

The shitty weather kept crowds to a minimum (but a big thank you to all those who came out) and it's only upon reflection that I realized that I missed out on a lot of crowd interaction because we spent so much time in the middle of the street, to avoid the great puddles that form by the curb. I didn't read many signs, there were also much fewer of them.

When we turned onto Detroit from West 29th, after the mile eleven marker, we were suddenly struck by the devastation power of a Great Lake. It is a beautiful thing to live in proximity to such a majestic body of water as Lake Erie. However, when weather is inclement it can be an angry and unforgiving force. My grandfather sailed around the world, and he said the most dangerous body of water he had ever traversed was Erie.

But we did it. Onto the Shoreway, that final incline, we kept each other's spirits high, worked past the pace captain, and made it to the finish line.

It remained ghastly, every celebratory aspect of the finish line we were being pelted with rain and sleet. Grabbing food, receiving medals, I had to get my bag and put dry clothes over my wet ones, just to keep out the chill. My legs were terribly red. My fingers were numb, they could barely untie my laces. Later I would discover my wet socks had worn a nasty tear into my left heel.

Fact is, I have not felt this miserable after a race in a very long time, Years. When I got home, took a bath, had a nap, I ache, my knees hurt, Just ugh. Horrid weather. But, hey! Cleveland.

Chris and I had been joking about the post-race beer for days, and we actually went to get it. Because dammit! After a few sips, and attempted conversation with another runner, we decided this was pointless and pitched our cups to head off to get something to eat.

Inn on Coventry. Eggs Mando. Breakfast of champions.

I took a different path.

James A. Garfield Monument
Q: Where is President James A. Garfield buried?

If you answered Lakeview Cemetery, you would be wrong.

When I want a scenic if somewhat challenging five-to-six mile run, then I head for Lakeview. It does take two miles to get there and two miles back, but the mile or more I spend within its ancient stone walls are more than worth the effort.

Founded almost one hundred and fifty years ago, this most awesome Cleveland attraction is the final resting place of such legendary Cleveland personages as artist Victor Schreckengost, Mayor Carl Stokes, inventor Garrett Morgan and yes, President Garfield.

Only Garfield isn't technically buried. He and his wife Lucretia lie in state in the crypt of the Garfield Monument. The Monument, open April through November, the highest point the cemetery and the observation plaza provides a wonderful view.

Personally, when running though I often take a moment to visit the stones for former Safety Director Eliot Ness and comic book author and jazz critic Harvey Pekar, who was and is a quintessential Heights persona. These two grave sites are actually about ten paces from each other, across the road from Wade Pond.

Here is the thing though, if you enter the park from Mayfield in Cleveland Heights with plans to exit onto Euclid Avenue in East Cleveland, that's fine. It's downhill all the way. For this five miler, however, I take a lap around the monument, downhill and back up again. The "up" part can be pretty steep.

If I chose to run eight miles, I would head out the Euclid Avenue gate and turn left into the Uptown neighborhood, swing around MOCA and head up through Little Italy and back home.

Distance: 5.42 miles
Avg Pace: 7:47
Duration: 42:15
Route: Lakeview Cemetery

The wind and spitting rain just trying to cross Euclid Avenue after rehearsal last night was insane! Today the rain has subsided and it's like a windy spring day, but apparently winter is blowing in. I'm glad I got to take this morning run. Feeling strong, feeling good, feeling grateful.

You gotta be stronger.

Downtown from Forest Hill Park
Seventeen runs in the month of January. Not a record, but close to it. Last time I was training for a marathon. This year I am just trying to stay one step ahead ... of everything, really. Also, the weather has not been a hindrance.

Distance: 3.58 miles
Avg Pace: 7:58
Duration: 29:08
Route: Forest Hill Loop

It's a mile there and a mile back, but worth it to run a mile or so through Forest Hills Park. From Forest Hills Blvd. and Lee I run around Duck Pond (many geese, two ducks) and past a playground into the woods where I cross over the high stone bridge which connects East Cleveland to Cleveland Heights.

I take a right to Sled Hill which provides a hazy view of the city (see photo) before loping around past the Great Meadow and out of the park.

It's a gently sloping run, with a few inclines but they are short.

DID YOU KNOW ..? Forest Hill Park was once part of the estate of John D. Rockefeller, who deeded the land to both cities in 1936, eighty years ago. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Also: the park is Forest Hill, the boulevard that runs through it is Forest Hills. Just learned that. It is confusing.

Temperature: 54°
Climate: partly sunny
Pavement: dry

Yes, I am concerned about global climate change. But it is very difficult to feel anxious about the future on a sunny day in the mid-fifties. Running in shorts is so liberating when you have had several runs in long pants.

Man, my all-weather running pants are, like, twelve years old. I guess when you wear something twenty times a year, for a half-hour at a time, they last. They have, however, been washed more than most items of clothes I own.

Anyway. Today, shorts!

Weight: 163.5 lbs. (+1.0)
Mood: positive!

Running miles. It doesn't stop for you.

Paranoid Android.
Yes, two beloved artists passed away within days of each other. What is bizarre is how people have started posting new articles of people who died years ago as though they just happened and everyone piles on with shock and distress until someone points out that Dave Brubeck actually died in 2012, for example.

Actually, this happens all the time. I once re-mourned Lena Horne, and was embarrassed to have forgotten she'd died in 2010. I should have known that, I'd been reading about her when she passed.

Of course, when someone posts the death of Bob Denver (d. 2005) as the "third" in a row we're all waiting for, you have to wonder if you are being snowed. Because when I think of David Bowie and Alan Rickman, I am immediately reminded of Bob Denver.

Brisk day. Good morning run through the park, the short version. Thought I would get that in before it gets colder. Wondering how long I will be able to run in the park. When it snows, I am sure they do not shovel the paths. I will report if they do. But any time it thaws, the stuff just runs into the lagoon.

Which makes for a pretty full lagoon. We'll see. It does take a mile to get there and a mile back, just so I can run for a mile (or so) through trees. But it's worth it. I am preferring it to running through town. Fewer obvious inclines, less traffic to worry about.

Get out of the way.

Spoonbridge and Cherry
Yesterday was one, big, successful check list. It began by sleeping in, at least for as long as possible. I get up at 5 AM on a normal day, that's 4 AM here. I did manage to wake and then go back to sleep long enough to achieve some semblance of rest. It's just how my brain works.

My brother and I headed out in late morning to drive the entire route of the marathon. This was good, as I am now aware of certain long inclines, and generally know what I have to look forward to. For example, when I pass Spoonbridge and Cherry there is a long steady incline past the Walker Arts Center.

Footnote: Spoonbridge and Cherry at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the team who (figuratively) gave Cleveland The Free Stamp.

We got turned around a lot around the many lakes, and I carped that my brother was making the race seem a lot longer than it actually is. But we got straight by the second half, which is pretty much north to the East Franklin Avenue Bridge and then East to the State House.

But there is Mile 21. It is a steady incline, for an entire mile. We are not safe until we have passed the 22 mile marker and are heading due east on Summit Avenue. And that is the distance at which I began to cash out last time. It is good to know.

Then we proceeded to the Expo at the Saint Paul RiverCentre, which for those who have never attended one is like a runner's mall. There are kiosks of product for runners and its very crowded and busy and you always have to pick up your bib number in the back to make sure everyone buys something. I told my brother it would be quick, that I wasn't there to do any shopping, and yet I found myself lingering over the displays, hoping to find a new glasses strap. I did pick up a few gel packs and we headed back onto the street.

Big river.
Interesting ... unlike any other of the races (Kids' race, 5K, 10K) the marathon runners don't receive their shirt until the finish line.  This was new to me, I wonder the logic behind it. Why would organizers want to handle the additional headache of bringing thousands of shirts to the race on Sunday? Has there been a rash of individuals registering for the race, getting their shirt, not running it and then fraudulently claiming that they had?

It's always an exciting vibe, though. Seeing all the different kinds of people who run races like these. And today was Friday, tomorrow the joint is going to be packed.

After we met up with my sister-in-law for lunch, and then a trip to Goodwill for a cheap set of sweats. I got an awesome hooded MINNESOTA shirt I wish I could keep and some boss pants to keep me warm until the race starts Sunday morning.

Distance: 3 miles
Duration: 25:30
Avg Pace: 8:28
Route: Summit Avenue

Brisk morning run, low sun and somewhat blinding. It will be very cool tomorrow when we set out, I may begin the run in this sweatshirt, I do not know, it will collect a lot of sweat and losing it will make me cold. But I do not want to wear shirtsleeves.

I will run with the 8:35 group. I have been able to maintain eight and a half minutes very well throughout my training. And that will help me break my previous time. Because that's the plan.

Temperature: 43°

You gotta try a little harder.

This week. Not a bad week, certainly not. But it has been taxing on the mental front. It would have been a long week regardless, as we have begun rehearsals for the residency program. But I also needed to complete the first draft of the outreach touring script by Tuesday, which I did.

But this script, thinking of this script, has kept me from thinking of much else all summer. I certainly haven't been writing anything else, because any time I thought to, I would immediately feel regret and decide I really should be writing the tour script (which I was not really doing.)

This left a good three days to bear down and put the finishing touches on a grant application that was due Friday night at midnight.

So here we are. Those deadlines have passed, I accomplished my goals, and I am still here. And I do feel much, much more relaxed. Thank you.

I get to work with these people.
Distance: 10 miles
Duration: 1:21:55
Avg Pace: 8:11
Route: Uptown Loop

However, the running thing. Am I still training for a marathon? The other big new thing is that the kids started school on Monday, and that has kind of thrown me off a little bit. I have been running evenings. Friday was legitimately a day off, but not yesterday, which I chose to skip altogether.

Because I was at work from 9 in the morning until 9 at night. Because that.

Temperature: 84
Climate: bright, hot, sweaty
Weight: 157 lbs.
Intake: granola, yogurt & banana
Hydration: yes
Water Stop: no
Stretches: yoga (15 min.)

Hot, late morning run. Still in it. Lots of end of summer action, like a great all-year Shaw High School reunion going on in Forest Hills Park. Heading through Lakeview Cemetery I must report that yes, they now do have signage clearly stating you may not ride your bike through that park. Oh, well.

I have tried to reduce the amount of steep or continual climbing on my long runs, and so I have not been heading down to MLK as much as I have in training periods past. That just means I have been more enjoying my own neighborhood, Forest Hills, the side streets of Cleveland Heights, and so on.

I did come back up Little Italy, and did very well though it was exhausting. I headed up Lee towards Cain Park to take a water break - and then I remembered that hill and decided against it. So no water break. I must be sure to drink even more now than I already have.

My heart in overdrive.

"This is the way America was supposed to be."
(long-time resident observing our block party)
Yesterday was the annual block party and it was the stuff of legend. So many neighbors pulling together to make a special day on our street. There's been a lot of nonsense going on recently, stuff going missing from garages, one of the still vacant houses getting broken into. It makes a difference to come together as a neighborhood, to play and dance together.

When you are inside your home you can wonder what is going on outside, and create unhappy pictures. When everyone spills out into the street you know just all the great people who surround you and are looking out for you, and you for them.

The kids head off for a week with the outlaws in Athens this afternoon. They get a few more days. I declare this summer officially closed.

And a beautiful ten miles it was.  The view over the lake in Forest Hills I could see leaves at the very top of one tree beginning to turn. All over campus there were runners. I ran (tiny steps) all the way up Mayfield out of Little Italy.

I hadn't even mapped it. I just knew where to go to get me back home in the precise distance. Hit the ten mile mark two driveways from my house.

My beautiful house.

Your feet may take you far from me.

Halfway mark. Time to head back.
The wife took the kids on an overnight trip leaving me at home to make busy around the house. I would have gone, it would have been fun. But I have been out of the house for three weekends already and a) feel a responsibility to get the house in some kind of order before the school year begins for everyone and b) I have this play to write.

The play in question, a commission, has been holding me mentally hostage for several months now. I haven't written anything really new since last spring. Writing yes, but not "writing" writing. But finally, at last, as the deadline closes in, I am picking up speed, getting into the zone, choose your horrid metaphor, I am doing that thing.

Last night, as inspiration (and because it was on my sadly unfulfilled list of New Year's resolutions) I went to see a new play. So yay for that.

Band-aids: yes
Water bottle: yes
Snack: energy gel
Lip balm: check
Glide: sure, why not.

Little sleep last night, it was a bit on the warm side. Coming home from the west side last night I picked up barbeque from Hot Sauce Legacy and gorged myself on salt and fat and sugar while watching part of an episode of Breaking Bad before turning in.

I could have slept more, but am concerned about how warm it will get over the three hours I will be on the road. I will take Forest Hills before heading for MLK and the Shoreway, which means I won't need to go as far as Dead Man's Curve. Ditto, I will take the cemetery back. A different, more interesting route, I think.

Intake: yogurt, fresh fruit & granola
Hydration: yes
Stretches: yes
Upper Body: 90 reps

More weaknesses now, feeling it in my right ankle and knee, not only in my Achilles tendon. Something that lasts all day. No kind of hampering pain, just a reminder. This is before taking eighteen miles at once.

Memories of those harrowing four miles two weeks ago. That stuff can stick with you. Feels like that was the beginning of my troubles. I need to rest more, to eat well, to warm up and cool down more effectively.

Distance: 18 miles
Duration: 2:31:56
Avg Pace: 8:26
Route: To East 55th Street and Back

Soundtrack: The President's Summer Playlist: Day

Listening to the President's playlist it is very, very challenging to keep from having improper thoughts about the First Lady. Obama's playlist beats anything I could put together. President Scott Walker's playlist would be made up of rock acts who hate him.

Week Nine Total: 43 miles
Training To Date: 276 miles

Feast of the Assumption on Sunday at dawn smells like Court Street on Sunday at dawn.

No, I was unaware that Lakeview Cemetery was hosting their Run Though History 5K this morning. Mile fifteen was spent running and hiking up and through Lakeview (9:08 pace) and past all these folks heading for the starting line at 9 AM. If I had known, I could have registered and been there in time to make my last three miles an actual race.

I perfectly planned today's eighteen mile run. I even remembered to head out in sunglasses even though it was only dawn. The sun was high and bright for a great deal of my return run. And yet I regret not knowing about this local race. See, this is what they mean when they say long distance runners are miserable.

Temperature: 68° → 79°
Climate: bright, sunny, humid and perfect
Weight: 157 lbs.
Water Stop: yes, several

I have all day to myself. The plan is to write, fell and volunteer maple, and do a little de-cluttering. But first, an epsom salt bath with the Sunday Times.

Flood's Cove-Waldoboro 16 Mile Loop

Smiley face on abandoned schoolhouse.
Created a sixteen mile course, out Route 220 into Waldoboro, cut across Finntown Road, then back into Friendship on Route 97. Ideally the traffic will be light early on a Sunday morning and I will keep sharp.

It has been some time since I have felt this apprehensive, this afraid of a run. When I turn off Rt. 220 I will be stepping into the unknown, trusting I will find my way to the road back. I will have my phone, the route is mapped. And yet.

Distance: 16 miles
Duration: 2:17:07
Avg Pace: 8:34
Route: Flood's Cove-Waldoboro 16 Mile Loop

Rose at five, took my time in departing, in general silence. Ate, drank coffee and water, read, did some healthy stretches. Heading out felt a little desperate, in spite of stretching exercises I felt stiffer than I have so far this week, but then I have been running every day with only a driving day as a day off, and besides I only got six hours of fitful sleep.

Had an unhappy dream. An old friend, one whom I have not seen in a while, he was lamenting his failures. I walked them from my office to the bottom level of the parking garage to their car and he was regretful that he had not accomplished anything since that one hit single he'd had almost twenty years ago.

The run became easier as I went, and my mapping program was extremely helpful. The first five miles things were going extremely well -- only eight cars passed that entire length -- until I turned off 220 onto Finntown Road where I was set upon by horseflies for four entire miles.

Exactly like this.
It was maddening, I was being buzzed and bitten constantly, swatting and cursing. It was like Adrien Brody in that scene from King Kong. If there is anything positive to be gleaned from the experience it is that my pace increased considerably.

The map kept me from making at least one wrong turn, and reassured me the entire journey that I was headed in the right direction.

Turning onto Rt. 97 was a considerable relief, as it appeared I was leaving the swarm behind. Later, my father (who had suggested the route) remembered to me that Finntown Road was formerly site of the county garbage dump, which may have been helpful information.

I began counting down from eleven miles (five miles? that's easy!) but the road back into Friendship included many more inclines and valleys. I first felt hungry and exhausted at mile twelve (three miles! come on, you run that every day!) but just kept chugging along, keeping a steady eight-and-a-half minute pace the entire time.

Amazingly, the tracking program said I completed sixteen perfect miles right at the point at which I had started. I have since shaved and showered, and written this blog post. The rest of the day is a glorious bonus.

Week Seven Total: 40 miles
Training To Date: 210 miles

One other thing. The sound of a rooster crowing is not much different than the sound of a rooster being murdered.

Water Stop: water bottle
Stretches: yes, actually.

The lowest ebb and the highest high.

Blue moon over the Big House.
Rising to an alarm clock, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, to get out and run. Friday night was a Blue Moon, the highest tide. The entire family stayed up to experience the springtide which peaked around 11:30 AM. No alarm was set for Saturday, I would sleep until whenever.

Even then, I sat and read before the fire, and did some writing. The mornings have been active, the afternoons less so. What if I turned that on its head?

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration:  28:22
Avg Pace: 8:08
Route: Martin Point Run

Later morning run. Hotter, but also breezier. Many people out, walking dogs or just walking, Even some runners. Haven't seen many of those yet.

No headphones. Heavy breathing. Lobster boats working. The sound of oncoming trucks. People waving and saying hello. Birds, breezes. The water. Far off motorboats. My own feet striking the pavement.

Tomorrow I have sixteen miles scheduled. My experiences both running out 220 and also driving it myself yesterday make me wary of heading that way. Must plan ahead.

Running at the speed of light.

Up since 4 AM. Every year there is at least one morning the boy and I try some night fishing. The best part for me is getting breakfast at six from the pier grill. Lousy coffee, great eggs and hash browns. He caught three small fish, which meant the entire endeavor was an overwhelming success!

Distance: 6 miles
Avg Pace: 8.23
Route: Topsail Loop (or something)

Spotify gets spotty on the beach, so I thought I would try something new. Yesterday the wife and I had taken a long walk down the beach and I mused about running off the beach one morning and through one of the public passages onto the streets.

That way I could also check how fast I run at 165 bpm on pavement. Never really tested that before. Not much difference, a little, but not tremendously different. It sure felt easier, but I missed the wind off the ocean. And the ocean. The sand, the whole beach thing. Worth the effort.

True, though. The reception was much better. Should have brought my old iPod.

Temperature: 79°
Climate: breezy and hot

UPDATE: Girl Run

Her plan was to run three miles. The wife did not think this was a good idea, but she is a very determined girl. One mile out, one mile back, and then half a mile out and back. Her plan.

As the tide goes out the beach becomes very, very windy. We ran into the wind, for a mile. She did not make an objection nor a sound. We turned around at one mile.

Dad: How are you feeling.
Girl: Horrible!
Dad: You're doing great.
Girl: I want to sit down and I want to die!
Dad: You are breathing very well.
Girl: I hate my hair! I want to cut all my hair off!
Dad: We can cut your hair if you want.
Girl: I want to die!
Dad: I am proud of you.
Girl: SHUT UP.

And so on.

She made it two miles, and collapsed into the sand. By her estimation, it was an utter failure.

There you have every close, personal relationship with every woman in my life.

Distance: 2 miles
Avg Pace: 9.42
Temperature: 82°
Climate: really, really windy

Vacation means indulgence, to be sure. I have been consumed far less than normal, but what the hell did I used to eat and drink on vacay? No idea what I weight, feel I may have put on a bit. Or not. There's no scale here, we'll just wait and see.

Don't give up and don't give in.

Took a shortcut behind the elementary school in hopes to cut the route to exactly three miles. Came close. However, MapMyRun tells me there is a water break in Cumberland Park, so I will continue revising.

Distance: 3 miles
Avg Pace: 7.37
Route: Boulevard Loop

High humidity. Six AM run. May need to rise earlier to get even a little relief. There's this issue of X-Men where the team is trapped by Magneto in his secret lair deep beneath Antarctica. Storm raises the humidity in the space which wreaks havoc on the systems or something and everyone is sweating profusely.

John Byrne's image of X-Men sweating is what always pops into my mind on mornings like this.

Desperate to connect.

Michele Kosboth (2014)

Just a perfect, well-timed morning. Rose early, at 6:30. My wife and I traded somnambulic places, for once I had a decent sleep while she was up reading American Gods in the middle of the night.

I made coffee. I sat on the porch and wrote nonsense for a half-hour or so. I came in and sat in front of the fire and figured out a key moment in the new work. I made pancakes in honor of my father's nativity.

Seventy-nine years. I am less impressed with his advanced years than disturbed by the fact that I am old enough to have a father who is seventy-nine years old.

Temperature: 77°
Distance: 4 miles

Stephani and I had an exchange on Facebook yesterday about my routes. It drives her to distraction that I always report a fraction of a mile in my routes, she has a thing about round numbers. This is where runners with OCD can't see eye to eye ... some must run to the nearest mile and if they step one over they have to run another mile. In my case, I must run from one definite point to another, and then map it so I know exactly how far I ran.

Pheidippides had the decency and good sense to run precisely 26 miles before dropping over dead. But then for the 1908 Olympics, fat old Edward VII wanted another 0.2 miles so the runners could finish right in front of him. This is why we had to help them out of the Great War.

This morning I went an additional 0.2 myself (you're welcome, Stephani) running in the opposite direction for a bit to say hello the horse. We just stared at each other for a moment, then he whinnied. I win.
