I really miss hanging on each other's words.

Crazy, there's six first-run movies at the Cedar Lee this weekend that I have already seen.

Muggy days, rain and heat. I hope the fall is cool and long.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 28:09
Pace: 9:04

We had a power outage last night (always hated that word, "outage") which I managed by reading with a flashlight on the side porch. We have a gas stove so I was able to make ramen.

No, no idea. I would like to purchase a new digital scale, the one we have now is an old school spring activated version, which changes your weight depending on whether you are leaning forward or back, and I'd like something consistent.

Yesterday, I was exhausted, all day. Just not enough sleep. I tried to keep myself awake by drinking a lot of water (which necessitated many more trips to the toilet) and obsessing about snacks, and though I did have a small snack in the morning (a tiny bag of graham crackers) and one in the afternoon (one packet of fruit snacks) that was it and the rest of my meals were normal.

Had to look up Tony Carey, I thought that got on by mistake. Sounds like 1983. But he's old, too. So is Robyn Hitchcock. We're all old guys.

... but a little headachy. Allergies? Slept too warm? This has happened twice recently. Don't care for it.

Still, awesome run. Juneteenth celebration starting up at Cain Park. People on the streets. And yes, a longer run -- I get IDEAS. I need to jot them down, but they are very helpful.

I have been writing, consistently, for two weeks. It has been a while since I have been or have had the capacity (i.e. time) to keep a consistent schedule of creation. Mostly it's been journaling, which I have to remind myself is also a good thing to do, but I also need to storyboard, to think about the world of the play, to create a backstory that makes the narrative make sense. Today I made progress on a very important scene, one which will be original to this adaptation, and provide a history to certain characters whose past is shrouded in myth in the original.

How did this place come to be? And how, in such a relatively short period of time? Why here, and now?

The most alive I've ever been.

Friends and neighbors ... 60 Playlists for 60 Years.

2026 Playlist
The Arbiter - Bryce Pinkham and the Company of CHESS

The Great Divide - Noah Kahan
drop dead - Olivia Rodrigo
Dopamine - Robyn
Dry Spell - Kasey Musgraves
Dance No More - Harry Styles
Stampede - Genesis Owusu
Punk Rocky - A$AP Rocky

Yep, we saw Chess on Broadway at the end of last year and it was a good time, but most of what I really loved about it is not to be found on the original cast recording. Pinkham is a gas but he's not the best singer which is evidenced in this recording. The thing is, on stage that's part of the joke -- Me? The Narrator? I get a song? Oh, my!

I'd really like them to make available the single The Arbiter (I Know the Score) performed by Björn Skifs, a re-recording of the concept album version that includes a third verse:
As you settle down behind your pawns, power passes to me
You can play like Fischer, Karpov, Euwe, and Tal combined
I won't mind; please feel free

They all thought they were "the big fromage", but they don't have my clout
I control the match; I start it, I can call it off
Kasparov found that out
Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 27:20
Pace: 8:49

Audition month. End of season. Beginning of new things. One day we will move beyond oh who am I kidding, that day will never come. Rather, let us embrace the generosity of now. My family, our home, our cats. Health, privilege, time.

You should feel invincible.

Maybe next time,
I'll be lucky.
On Wednesday, I received the announcement from the NYC Marathon that I did not make the lottery. I will not be going to New York this fall, at least, not to run in the marathon. There will be no 20 year celebration of my first marathon, I will not be attempting a fifth race, not this year.

Distance: 4.5 miles
Duration: 40:45
Pace: 9:03

I also resisted the temptation to sign up for a fund raising team. I told myself, if I do not get in, I am not going. Fund raising for Chicago made me culpable. Days before the race I knew it would not go well, but I felt responsible to the people who had donated, I had to run the race. I never want that to happen again, if I don't feel up to the race, I won't race.

Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 66°
Climate: beautiful, man. just beautiful
Mood: apprehensive

Because I have a show that weekend, Halloween weekend. When I signed up for New York, that was when I learned there would be a conflict. A November 1st race? Uh, okay. I'll put my foot in. We'll see what happens. It didn't happen. And that's fine.

Having said all that, I need to remember why I run. If I am not training, what am I running to? What am I running for? The running is its own reward. I remain fit. Noom helped me get to 160, and I have stayed there, it is the best weight for me to be. And since I quite the app (it does cost some money) I have maintained my eating habits, drinking water, and the exercise. And more exercise, the sit-ups, the push-ups -- not a lot, I'll never be muscular, and I don't need to be. But maintenance. Remaining fit.

And I enjoy the music.

I wanted to run yesterday. It was a beautiful day, but I had to work later than usual, and by the time I got home it was sundown. I no longer run outdoors after dark, it's just not safe. And by that, I mean I could trip or at the very least, run tentatively, afraid of running into something, and that can cause strained muscles and sore knees. Better not to.

It is also beautiful today.

One day that’ll be your forehead I’m kissing.

"This hasn't happened to me since M!"
Wednesday night I was on my own, the wife at a dinner, the elder at their internship. It has been a while since I have been on my own with nothing to do myself. And since the kids have graduated high school, I have tried to take advantage of opportunities like these to do things I always told myself I wanted to -- like to watch movies on my own.

I have also been affected by the use of screens, the inability to focus on one story from beginning to end. It's easier at the cinema. On Monday I treated myself to The Testament of Ann Lee. I went out, had a beer, got popcorn, and watched a flick, all by my lonesome.

Wednesday night, I took time to make a list of possible selections. I chose M, Fritz Lang's 1931 psychological thriller which introduced the world to Peter Lorre.

Goodness. Isn't that film timely.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 28:11
Pace: 9:05

Ten years ago yesterday, my life changed forever. Maybe it is too facile to think that only the death of someone close to me defines my existence, but upon reflection it certainly seems that way. When Calvin was born in 2001, I became a different person, suddenly, and then gradually. I thought differently, looked at the world and the people in it differently.

When my father died of a massive heart attack on the morning of February 19, 2016, my world shifted again, and I moved into this new phase of my life with uncertainty, but also a new purpose.

With the deaths of Bowie and Prince at around the same time, it became a meme that year, "Everyone is dying! Put a ring around Betty White!" Yeah, well. As George St. Geegland put it, "When a famous person dies, blame the year and make it about you." My father died in 2016, it wasn't part of a curse, it was thing that happened. It was going to happen, fathers die.

As will I, some day. Most mornings these days I say farewell to our elder child as they head off to the openings shift at a local bakery and coffee shop. I am their father. As he was to me, I am to them. I hope I live so long. Longer, though. When did my father stop running? Why did he stop running? I feel like it was something he did for a short while, starting later than I did, and stopping before this. I do not recall.

The exercise keeps me healthy, and fit. Will it extend my existence?

Charge me up now.

March 2006
(That's a dye job.)
With the life I am currently living, it makes sense that I completely forgot to acknowledge the fact that this blog is twenty years old. "Daddy Runs Fast" began on January 10, 2006. My first run of the new year. I was 37 years old. I was about 170 lbs. I was complaining about belly fat. I had plantar warts. I had a lingering hamstring pull. I would soon develop shin splints. I thought myself old.

I am glad that at that time, I considered 170 lbs. to be "10 pounds overweight." That I knew then what my ideal weight is — which is where I am now. A thing to be proud of. On that date, I ran two miles, and that it was hard. I would run a marathon that November.

Run for the hills. Run for the trees.

I had a fantasy about running the LES while we were out of town, but I also wanted to sleep in, to go with whatever the plan might be. Also, the forecast was for cold. It had snowed several inches the day before we arrived and the sidewalks and streets were sludgy and slippery.

I made the right decision by not bringing my kit, and I did not regret that one moment. Sometimes you have to surrender to the reality of the situation.

Yes, glad I did the Turkey Trot. My fastest five mile was in the 36 minute range, and that was a very long time ago. But we do not need to go fast. This is the only official race photo they got of me, I'm trying to turn on IG so I can record a few moments by the Guardians of Traffic and I look up and there's the photographer and even then I thought, well that's going to be the dumbest picture ever.

Soon it's a race, it's a rush and a high.

It is such a joy to discover that a theatre somewhere in the United States is producing one of my plays. Of course, we are producing one much closer to home, and there is much to celebrate in that.

The weather is not unbearable, though we do have air conditioning. What will happen when we do not?

The sleeps have been good, I have been trying not to use assistance in falling asleep these past several nights, and it is mostly successful. On occasion we knock ourselves out, it seemed kind of bleary for a while.

The real issue this weekend is allergies. I use drops, but my eyes were all red yesterday, all day. I have resumed taking OTC allergy meds today, I hope that shows results.

I'm moving so fast, no time to process.

Thank you for your service.
It didn't feel as though I took a break from running, because I was in a show, one which involved a great many trips up and down four flights of stairs. And the dressing room participated in group push ups before every show.

But then there was the illness, some kind of virus which first struck my wife, and then me, rendering me weak and woozy the last few days of the year.

Running has been patiently waiting for me. It always does.

It is amusing to me that I ran more in November than in October. It may be due to a colder October and a warmer November. Or I was busy? Or who knows? Anyway, I say I am amused. Amused, I say.

Failed to mention, I walked 3.2 miles on Monday night. Just, needed to get those steps in, walked the large block, from Noble to Mayfield to Taylor and home. It was a little brisk, but a lovely evening. Not sure how long it took, maybe 45 minutes?

Three point two, maybe. I could just run that.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 28:23
Pace: 9:09

The cold, and also, the wind. We approach winter.  Weather good for a run, though.

Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 56°
Climate: cloudy & cool
Mood: all right
Stretches: no
Water: yes
Pain Reliever: TBD

Wait. How did I get a headache during that run? Maybe it is because I am exhausted. I will go into that soon.
