I paid for the beer, man.

Still in the Seventies. Last weekend, our elder child humored me, they let me show them Dazed & Confused, Richard Linklater's second motion picture. Released in 1993, it takes place on the last day of school in 1976, in a small town in Texas.

I told my kid that it's not like other "teen movies" though watching it for the first time in decades, I'm not sure they would agree. It's not zany like some of John Hughes' movies, but it does dwell a great deal on the rude behavior of teenagers and some of it must seem downright psychotic.

Don't care. Love Linklater, love this movie. And it was the first great step into the 1970s revival of the 1990s. We'd spent the 80s loudly mocking the fashion and music of the Me Decade, and then we were handed this gem of a soundtrack.

And the 90s truly began.

The run was great, felt great, not terribly hot. No pain. And yet, my continued exercise is certain exacerbating my sciatica. Also, both knees hurt, and sometimes a lot. I've been seeing many shows at BorderLight this weekend, the plastic chairs are not helping.

Maybe I should take a day off. Today was not that day.

Incidental highs.

Gabriel & Dresden's eponymous debut album was released twenty years ago, on June 1, 2006. My first record of having run to any of its tracks was Tracking Treasure Down, in February 2007.

The first time I ran to the entire album was on April 28 of that year.
"I have been waiting some time to attempt a run listening to the entire Gabriel and Dresden album. That's my record of the year. I picked up a track on iTunes a few weeks back and really liked it, and then they started the "complete your album" promotion and so I got the whole thing — which includes the entire album mixed as one, uninterrupted track. Except for this Pink Floyd-esque thing right in the middle, the entire record makes for a dynamite run."
Distance: 5.9 miles
Duration: 55:35
Pace: 9:25

A few downbeat tracks are a bit of a drag, and the whole thing is one hour thirteen. Today, I have chosen a mix which suits my recent summer weekend loop. It's one of the only albums I have returned to (and more than twice) as part of Albums For Running.

So, no. It was not something I listened to while training for New York in 2006. But it was a major inspiration while I was writing And Then You Die. It is my mid-life crisis soundtrack. Regret, yearning, aspiration, doubt, determination, guilt, and on and on.

Heading out I had pain in two points in the back of my right knee. Unpleasant, not debilitating, and it subsided soon enough.

Around mile five, I got a sharp pain on the inside of my left knee cap, and that was debilitating. I stretched, I hobbled, I endured. It, too, subsided. Oof.

Anyway, here's Father's Day.

I seem to be gaining weight. Either that, or I have been standing on the scale wrong and if that's the case, I just need to be wiser with my diet.

I didn't think it was an out-of-control weekend. In fact, I skipped lunch on Saturday, without even intending to. As we head into sugar season, I must be mindful.

The lengths that I will go to.

*attacked*
Okay. Yesterday, I came home from work and worked. I got up this morning (see below) and continued that work. Then I went to work. It's Saturday.

I was going to go out of town for a day and a half, but I'm no longer doing that. I'm owed a couple days off, but the timing is all wrong. Because I have to work.

My right knee has been giving me some serious shit. It's even been keeping me up in the middle of the night. A lot of ibuprofen. I have been waking at 4:00 AM the last couple of days just to take more pain reliever.

Maybe I should take a break from running, but

I'm better than ever.

Missed a day, could not be helped. Between camp and the almost constant rain, running was not possible yesterday. Today, however, is optimal. Because now, it is about to scorch.

You complained about the rain? Welcome to a week's worth of ninety degree temperatures. Hot runs, all the way down.

Forest Hill Park Run/Walk

The clouds were oppressive. I had a headache for days. Also, running in the mist the other day was not good. My knees were aching as I ran, rather than after or later. I need to remember that, it's not just that I don't like to run in the rain, or in colder weather, it affects my joints now.

Distance: 2.15 miles
Duration: 23:45

Took a lovely run/walk with the elder child this morning. We drove to the park so we could do all our running in the park itself. They had spent some time there yesterday, communing with geese and their goslings and some very weird ducks.

Flood's Cove: Run Seven

Yes, rest between runs. So very important. We are watching the Olympics, intermittently. And reading. It has been a cool several days, which is nice. That is one of the reasons people vacation, after all. To escape the heat.

However, this has also had a seriously debilitating effect on my knees. Tuesday I was practically limping, stiff and pained. What helped to alleviate that pain? Ibuprofen, for one. Also, cannabis. Finally, in the evening, ice.

Flood's Cove: Run Four

Happy birthday to me. You know what hurts my knees? Standing. Standing and cooking, for example. Or teaching. These things hurt my knees, much more than running. or in addition to running.

Yesterday, in advance of my birthday, but because insisted upon it, all occupants of the Barnstable went to Thomaston to watch Deadpool & Wolverine. It was okay.

I looked up at the tallest building, felt it falling down.

Paul Atreidies is a bitch.
First bad sleep in days, but that was due to it being a Monday. they usually call off on Mondays (or Tuesdays). It's a fact. So I drowse but not doze.

Anyway, March Mildness is an opportunity to take stock of how much alcohol occupies my imagination. Like social media, it is a thing I rely on as a distraction. "Alcohol will relax/inspire/entertain me."

The beer fridge is empty, I emptied it over the month of February. There is no beer to drink in the house. I have not made a "mocktail" for myself, yet. Part of not drinking is avoiding added sugar. The wife has a new interest, sparkling mineral water. I would like to indulge in that, myself.

Weather in the Heights was lovely once we got home, but Monday evening I chose to see Dune 2 instead of running. Besides, my knees are very sore. Not sure what I can do about that. Just stretch and compress and take pain reliever and maintain.

Writing your tragedy.

A four-mile run may be followed by a much shorter run. That is entirely acceptable, if it means moving on. There is nothing particularly notable about the year 2002 that warrants a longer playlist, just this banger which I didn't even know existed until a certain movie was released late last year.

I love you on the run and you love me.

Aches. My knees were hurting yesterday, but why? Not particularly cold, I have not been running. That may be it, of course, my muscles going slack with disuse. Not sure.

Going to run in the cold and damp. Feeling stressed out this week, we live in challenging times and I really wish standing up for what you believe felt better than this, but then maybe that's the point.

I will be your daddy.

Thank God for George Michael, and especially for the single "I Want Your Sex" which was first released on the soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop II in May 1987.

It's not the best rack on his first, upcoming solo record, Faith. But is was a quirky, frenetic, deconstructed bop which enraged a lot of silly people. I got the "extended CD single" that summer and wore that fucker out.

Over my high school years I had developed a terrible case of acne on my chest, back and shoulders. At the end of 1986 I was single again and miserable, I thought I'd never date again. The year 1987 started with my first one-night stand, which was completely humiliating.

However, I was soon prescribed Accutane. My skin cleared up, and with it a degree of physical self-confidence that no man deserves, and for a short time, I became a player. George Michael wrote my songs. Well, George and Robert Smith.

Maybe I will try running to some Cure albums next.

What are we going to do to remain ... motivated? When I have more time, will I know what to do with it? When will I resume writing, and how? About what? I have some ideas, something to futz with.

But. Avoiding the compulsive feeding. And the exercise. Moderating the drinking. Even the drinking -- I tell myself that I'm not drinking during the week, but I am. At the movies on Monday. At the game on Thursday.

Your ha-ha-heart goes pit-a-pat.

Mindfulness and control. Sleeping, and sleeping well. Running and not running. And working, and that makes me a little ... I do not know what.

Chose another clip from And Then You Die in 2009. This story was cut when I tried to make the show one hour, and I miss it. I had learned something about myself, about the picture I had created of myself as a youth, that I was oppressed and intimidated by thick-headed athletes when nothing could be farther from the truth. I was the arrogant one. It was me.

In particular I love this clip because I was surprised by an audience member's reaction when I announced, "Twenty years later, I am a jock." It's the kind of thing that only happens in live performance, I hope you enjoy it.
