Hey. Only fools rush in and only time will tell if we stand the test of time.

This week has been challenging. A post-Mother's Day ball game was less-than pleasant because the air was just a bit too chilly (we did defeat the Angels, however.)

Then on Tuesday, I played substitute at my old middle school (not the same building, but like ship of Theseus, it occupies the same space) and, I'm not getting into this, but agreeing to let my colleague run the class they way she preferred meant I was standing for the better part of five hours.

I came home and took a two hour nap, which is not my custom, it's not something I can do, sleep for two hours in the afternoon. But I was exhausted. This morning, I woke exhausted, but needed to teach a day-long Romeo & Juliet workshop at my spouse's former place of employment.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 27:23
Pace: 8:49

I thought I would be destroyed, but it was a lovely day. My throat burns from two days of talking, and I did take a twenty minute nap after work, but you know? Sometimes I feel better after a run.

Even when it is cooler than I would desire

You came like a comet.

So, we have been doing the every other day thing for more than a year. Pretty incredible. I am proud of me.

There are things that I have had on my schedule for months which have been brought to a kind of conclusion. The reunion. The commission. I should feel a sense of relief, and in a way, I do.

I'm also really tired. So is the wife. I guess this is what life is now. Maybe it always has been.

Your man in motion.

Running every other day seems to be working pretty well. The knees are not as sore.

But my gosh, the camp is exhausting. I mean, it's a good time, we're doing good work with the kids. But I wake up at 5:30 and I just want to go back to sleep. I tried not napping after, to see if I could make it to bedtime so I could drop and have a proper sleep, but on Monday it was impossible, I had wanted to nod off all day. A twenty minute nap became an hour long nap and I was just delirious.

Still did some work on the deck, though. So I guess I'm muscling through.

Muscles!

Drop to your knees.

Three days in a row -- in February! How odd. I may have taken a break, but tomorrow is pretty booked so I that will be my break. The goal is to get back up to speed, with my lungs and legs at capacity by March.

Still need to get that additional knee brace. Got to put that on the list. If it's not on the list, I forget. And the list is so important on a Saturday. My Saturdays are for ..? Housekeeping. Groceries. Also, writing and cooking.

We have had this pumpkin sitting here since fall. So? I made a pie. No idea I was going to do that today. That kind of spontaneity I can get behind.

Oh, shit. That was arduous. Perfect day, bright skies, a little cool, low breeze, but shit. I was out of breath. I am unprepared and weigh too much. Worth it? Sure, but fuck.

Flood's Cove: Run Seven

Twenty runs or more every month since March. That's some kind of record. I'm not even training for anything.

One more in before we leave tomorrow. It's been a beautiful week, lots of sun, some really hard rain, too, but that's kept the temperatures reasonable. And by reasonable, I mean perfect.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 35:12
Pace: 10:03
Route: Martin Point Run
Temperature: 73°
Climate: sunny & nice
Mood: good

Last run, slow run. The past two nights I have not slept well, in spite of it being "good sleeping weather." Last night I woke up all the time, I have bedsores on both hips from how firm this mattress is. And you need to sleep to run well.

Next run, probably Thursday, in Cleveland Heights. I will miss the smell of the sea, of the pine, and the relatively low humidity.

The harder they fall.

Long day, teaching improvisation at a school and hour's drive away. Coming home at 3:00 PM, seventy degree heat, literally almost fell asleep once or twice. Not good. I should have pulled over for a beverage. This is a lesson.

If you should die while crossing the street

I really don't like the cold. Even briefly, just these few days below freezing. I feel uncomfortable, unmotivated, though not (fortunately) unwell. Just a brief dip into the 20s, it's not much of a winter. But I'm not crazy about it.

Still got some new gear yesterday, new gloves and pants, ordered what I couldn't find in stores online.

Distance: 2.3 miles
Duration: 23:50
Pace:  10:20
Route: Horizon Loop (clockwise)
Temperature: 38°
Climate: bright & cool
Pavement: dry w/some patchy snow
Mood: tired

"Clockwise" for the Horizon Loop means I begin with a hill for about a quarter mile. Then it's downhill for the rest of the mile and then mostly flat. Today was the first day I have felt stiff and tired, but it's an evening run not a morning run, so there's your difference.

That's all there is.

Woof. Running every day is taking a toll. Calf muscles are sore. Worried I might get taken out by shin splints. Warm weather would help. Spent last night with a bandage on my leg. But these days are cold, will be cold. And I need to press through that.

Part of this is keeping my kits clean and accessible. And making sure this blog is something I prepare in advance. If I do not prepare in advance for a run, getting out onto the street can take forever, and that brings down my mood.

Like right now.

See, that's a reality check. The scale is not strictly accurate. Taking a daily read on my weight is barometer, to be sure. But what is actually going on? I believe there must be foodstuff (excuse me for getting gross) sitting in my system at all times. The level of food needs to decrease, and I am working on that. And that it's food and not non-food. Fat from chocolate, or processed and fried potato and corn. I am trying to purge myself of these things while instead consuming good things.

I didn't really eat much yesterday. The day before, however. Anyway. I was going to take a break from running today, but decided against it. Maybe tomorrow, though! Delayed gratification. And when I take a break, I want to spend it well.

I can feel my lifetime piling up.

Being overweight is not good. If I was just big and happy, that would be one thing. I don't like the sighing I do when I have taken the stairs. Or the sudden sighs I do, out of nowhere. I know weight and activity are not necessarily related. I can exercise and be big. But as I age, I worry about additional taxation on my heart.

These are the things I worry about. And yet, I am also trying not to diet. I want to be, you know, Mindful. That's what the kids say, right? Mindful.

Ok. Ugh. My left ankle began to hurt shortly into my last run. It hurt all day. And the next day. Then my knee again. I don't understand.

You're lucky to be alive.

The weather turns, I lose interest. Worse, my diet has been terrible. Sorry. It has been terrible. Since before Halloween I have consumed so much sugar. Also, many fast food stops.

Like, too many fast food stops. I discovered the Arby's across from the building where I take classes. I mean, it's always been there, but who the fuck would go in? me, that's who. Once I got it into my head. Do you know how terrible that food is? Absurd, I need to cut that shit out.

Sugar, grease. And I can feel it in my mouth. The flesh on my tongue becomes sore. It's awful. I need fresh food. Fresh. Food. Fruit, vegetables. Good things! That is how I ate for most of the last year, suddenly, who cares?

And zero exercise. My nights have been terrible. I take melatonin, and when I do sleep, it is deep an full of crazy dreams. But I wake up half a dozen times. Sore, needing to roll over. I only just realized that maybe it is due to the fact that I am no longer exercising, not at all.

I had to teach the past two mornings. Four classes, back to back. Instructing large classes, and acting, too. Last night I slept well, because I had been on my feet.

So, running it is. Let's run.

Distance: 3.1 miles

Burning the ground.

I went to bed last night and thought, I am going to wake up in the middle of the night and not get back to sleep. And sure as hell, that is what happened. Personal issues, work issues, artistic issues, school issues. There was no closing the mout of my mind. So? I woke up at 4:00 AM and got some god damn work done.

My son asked why I do the "year playlist" thing and I told him several reasons. The primary reason, I told him, was for nostalgia. I cast my mind back into my history and it makes me think and remember, and sometimes it can be creatively stimulating.

Of course, another reason is so that I don't have to think about what it is I am going to listen to. Now that that time of year has passed, I must decide, every run. Will it be for BPM? Or maybe a playlist inspired by a certain song or artist, or an album? And I don't like that. I have enough to think about on a daily basis.

Intake
Breakfast: mixed berry crip w/cream, coffee (2x)
Lunch: tofu, beans & rice, cucumber ribbon salad, sliver of carrot cake
Happy Hour: beer (1x)
Dinner: quinoa salad
Also, fizzy water (3x)

Started out weak. Weak ankles, shins, knees. Finished strong, though. Maybe take a day off tomorrow? Yeah, I really should take the day off tomorrow.

Remember that. Take the day off tomorrow.

Also: This happened.
Rainy and cool. I am a little sleepy this morning. Take a nap -- or a run?

Neglected Entry

That time I entirely neglected to blog a run. Hasn't happened in over twelve years. Just didn't think of it. Just didn't care.

Today is Tuesday, September 25. Two days ago the boy and I went to the gym. He rode his bike and I ran, then as he did the treadmill at the rec center, I ran two more miles. Then we came home, and by that time I was exhausted. Not just tired, but my muscles were weary, my hip hurt.

Distance: a little more than four miles

Running the treadmill last week, I learned I do not like the treadmill. You must run a consistent speed, and that doesn't work for me anymore. I need to be able to slow down, when I want to slow down, and speed up when I want to speed up, without thinking about it. Keeping the pace consistent makes me shorten my stride, and that does not feel good.

Likewise, I feel that running with the boy riding his boke also does not work. He has longer legs now, he goes faster. And I go slower. I have to run hard to keep up. Not very hard, but harder than I would, you know?

Anyway, I haven't been so ambivalent about running since 2011. These things, they come, they go.
