Let the rhythm pull you in.

I have canceled Noom. It has become a burden, logging all that information for me to stay in the same place. I mean, I am glad I am in the same place. The question is, can I stay here on my own? I am aware of what is necessary for me to feel good, do I need to spend that much money for an app to remind me to keep on it?

It is a lot of money.

I am still logged on through the end of April. It recently renewed -- which was my reminder to stop.

So. Let's see how we do on our own.

Distance: 3 miles
Duration: 25:47

Woke this morning with a headache and also a strong case or vertigo. I do not know how these two related to each other, but they did not compliment each other. I read for a half-hour, from six to seven (RIP) but then I just went back to bed, getting up once for breakfast,

I hope this is a passing thing. My wife encourages me to do the exercises, but I really hate to do them. Like, more than most exercises. I should get on them, though. I also don't feel they do anything, but I guess I would think that.

God knows where I'm going to.

It was a different time.
Logy morning, headachy. The kitten (is she a kitten? she's huge) reliably wakes us up at 4:00 AM. Not sure how long this is going to last. It's like having a toddler. A toddler with claws.

Distance: 3.1 miles

We got so irritated to learn that when Millennials thought of "the 80s" they were thinking of late 1980s, because of course they were. To them, "the 1980s" meant Bon Jovi, or Guns & Roses. To us, it was the early 1980s, which meant The Police, or Van Halen.

Actually, when we thought of the 1980s, we were really thinking of the late 1970s, like The Cars, Blondie and, well, The Police.

Now, when folks talk about the 90s, they really mean the late 90s. But that music was shit. The early 1990s, that was a golden era.

Flood's Cove: Run Six

Saturday evening, my brother and I read the play Victoria Station by Harold Pinter, for the enjoyment of the rest of the cabin. I think that was the first time my brother and I have ever read a script together.

The Hansen UK departed mid-day on Sunday, we were four until MIL arrives on Tuesday. The house seems a great deal empty now.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 32:34
Pace: 9:18

Unfortunately, the winds have changed and I woke today with a headache, one which has lasted into the afternoon, and I have spent the morning either sitting up and feeling unwell or lying down half-asleep.

Eventually, you need to take drastic action. In this case that means running

The kick in the eye.

O, it is me.
Yesterday was fucking horrid. I got a headache, as a result of nothing. Went to bed at an appropriate time, had zero alcohol, just, got a headache. And it got worse as the night progressed.

I couldn't get up without feeling ill. Took pain reliever, Pepto Bismol, Sudafed, these helped a little but the pain did not truly subside until the evening.

I had to cancel three workshops I was supposed to teach today, which was fine, they can be reshceduled. But I was dressed and prepared to walk out the door and I just couldn't do it, on my feet for hours maintaining my cool. I need a clear head to teach well, I just saw endless misery. I am grateful I could just not go.

Son of a gun.

Man. Looking over from when I started this blog. I had plantar warts. Those plagued me for the better part of five years. That was horrible. Thought those would last forever.

Then shin splints. I was told those would also never go away. But they do. The body has a tremendous capacity for change, for healing.

No, two drinks last night was not necessary. Not advisable.

I think I figured it out, why I choose lists from the early 70s or late 60s for short runs. The music is excellent, to be sure. But they do not inspire nostalgia, I have no memories associated with them. So they are just music, and not memory.

Spotify not being helpful with my this morning, so I found a "1973 Number Ones" mix on YouTube, and found two new songs to add to my lists ("You're So Vain" was released in 1972).

What will be on my final playlist of this cycle, the one for the year 2023?

I keep a-running when the trouble follows.

Being demoralized makes me sleepy. Like, literally. when I am depressed, I just want to lie down. That was me on Friday. I did take a nap (I have really been avoiding naps) it didn't help, and then I just wanted another one a couple hours later. Luckily, we had dinner plans.

Slept in too late, again. The wife says, why not, but I know why. My head hurts. Sleeping in makes my head hurt, full stop. But I did manage to do some writing which was nice.

We're the the home stretch for March Mildness, and I am anxious about what comes next. Will I just lose my resolve? Gain the weight back? Go back to scarfing down treats and swilling booze? Abstinence is easier for me than moderation.

Thought I missed my window of opportunity. Forecast said sixty degrees all week, by the time I got out the sun had gone and it was very windy, dark and thunderous. I went anyway. Running into the wind was a bear, but not unbearable.

As I was entering the woods, I could see a break in the clouds approaching, and by the time I emerged it was sunny again! It was beautiful, and totally worth it. I am much stronger! Stronger than I have been in years!

Also, I was depressed -- but now I feel much better.

We can change the world.

Kill me.
We go days without drinking alcohol. None. It has been several days, including weekends. Friday night, soda water. Saturday morning, the headache. The Saturday morning headache. The day ruining headache.

Usually, when I have this kind of head pain I think it must have had something to do with alcohol, and in that way I can work up a real, Puritanic guilt. I fucked up This is my fault. That is an unhealthy way to think, anyway. But in this case, it's just false.

I spent most of the day in bed dozing. What a waste. At least I was able to read. And the turth is, it kept me from running. I think these joints need a day between runs, one day at least.

The mornings are cooler. It is the golden time for running -- and also sinus headaches.

I take your pain away.

The low-grade sinus headache, the kind that drags me to the ground. A lazy Sunday afternoon, but not relaxed. Thought best to nap, close my eyes, as my body was demanding, but caffeine had kicked in and the mind was on fire. Also, it ached.

The area around the bee sting (for that is what it must have been) does not sting, or ache, but it itches. Bee stings are few and far-between, my last was (embarrassingly enough, but also spectacularly painful) on my scalp, six years. The stinging came and went in waves for days. But not this itching. Odd.

The boy and I headed to the gym.

Distance: 3 miles
Route: Rec Center
Mood: all right

Stepping into the sunlight, after our rounds, I noticed my headache had almost entirely subsided. This was not the case after one mile, when I thought I couldn't continue. I tried changing it up, running a mile, doing a round of exercises, then and another mile. This worked out fine, but it felt like it took a long time.

During the third mile, my right ankle crashed out. This happened last week, sudden pain the ankle, I'll walk, stop or stretch (all three, actually) and then continue. When it hurts, it really hurts. Bu when it's gone, it's gone.

I think it means I need new shoes.

Moving on, forward.

Why not run? Concerts to attend, social events, writing to be written. We've seen an awful lot of plays this season. Last night the wife an I had a rare night on our own, attending a performance of the sold out run of Cabaret at Blank Canvas.

Tiny house (90 seats) set in the middle of a vast warehouse on the edge of downtown. That warehouse, 78th Street Studios, was last night crammed with craftspeople for the Cleveland Bazaar, and loaded with holiday shoppers.

This was my dream of the early 90s, we would stage events in strange spaces in the city and, yes, we would draw a certain number of folks to whatever it was we were doing but then it would be over and the places would once again be vacant and these moments would be few and far between.

This my hope for the future, that we continue making things happen in the city. Things are worse than they have ever been, things are better than they have ever been.

Did I mention the show were were seeing was Cabaret?

Distance: 3.3 miles
Avg. Pace: 9:03
Duration: 29:41
Route: Forest Hill Loop
Pavement: dusty snow

Snow, yes, even through the park, but it's still light and not packed, not crusty, not yet. Was able to chug my way around. It woud feel good to do that more often, though my knees are already in pain. That's what happens when I run in snow, too much twisting of my legs, too much landing on uneven ground.

Thankful for a great set of winter gear. Got this jacket from L.L.Bean during the summer of 2012, that was planning ahead. My brother gave me these pants over twelve years ago. No holes, both the zippers and the elastic in the cuffs still work.

Still. Weekend headaches. Went to bed after midnight last night, we had a post-show meal at Toast. She loves that places and I do, too. The waitress asked if we wanted the speaker near us turned down, but we didn't. Two funky young theater artists whom I dig were sitting two tables away talking shop and using the word "fuck" a surprising amount, but I didn't want them turned down, either.

It struck me that the two of us could run.

Got my mittens, got my hat.
I wonder where the snow is at.
Joyeux Noël. 'Tis the season. The elves still visit though they speak with greater maturity to the teen and near-teen. The advent calendar is out, preparations are being made for annual holiday events. Taking the girl to rehearsal for the winter recital at CIM this morning, this evening is the reception for the winners of the writing contest at Playhouse Square.

Tomorrow, we hold the first of what we hope will be a series of salons in our home. No idea how many people will attend. Kind of freaks me out, actually. But what will be will be.

Running through emergency rooms.

Ugh. Allergies. Woke this morning feeling sluggish, I hate that. The weather turns, which is great for running but awful for my head. To think, I am looking forward to the fall.

Distance: 3 miles
Route: Boulevard Loop

Oh, CHRIST, that made it worse. Thought a run would clear my head, instead my headache has settled into my eyebrows, where it will stay for a unpredictable future. God, I hate my head.

Temperature: 61°
Climate: over and cool ... but humid
Mood: my head hurts

But fast, yes. I ran fast. And the ideas I had, all the thinks I was thinking. How can I make the running play happen again? Where, when, and for what purpose? Because in my mind it is changing, Martin Denton said he wanted "to understand why running is so fundamentally important" to me. I may finally be able to answer that question clearly.

When the wind blows.

Thank you, Rio!
Muggy days, though not as hot. Tomorrow is the first day of school. Yes, the biggest of all summers draws to a close. Both kids now in middle school. And where am I?

Distance: 3.58 miles
Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 73°
Climate: cloudy, beautiful, and a little rain

Exhausted just heading out. Lousy sleep last night, too cold from air conditioning, then too hot. Developed a terrible headache, first in some time. The wife is out of town for the night, a work-related retreat. The kids are big enough to fend for themselves, even to serve me. Brought me the paper in bed, coffee, I just spent the whole morning in bed. That never happens. If it weren't for the headache I would never have let myself.

But it was a good day, hoping for a run. They each had soccer games today, I wanted my exercise, too. Nice, breezy night. It will be cool again soon. I hope its not one of those autumns where I miss the great weather.

Weight: 171.5 lbs. (+1.5)
Goal: 165 lbs.
Mood: heavy

Modified goal. My run was after a dense supper (cheese soup, with bread) but I am not making headway here. Far too many snacks. Looking forward to a normally paced week.

All this energy calling me back where it comes from.

Photo: Chuck Thompson
This is how my brain works. We're packed, we're driving. I'm driving. It's hot, and I am wearing shorts, new shorts which I had just purchased, nice new shorts for the vacation. Generally, I avoid shorts when I want people to take me seriously as an adult. I'd just as soon wear jeans than khaki shorts. But it's vacation, and I have learned to calm down, I am an American on the highway and I can wear shorts.

Only the air conditioning is on full blast and I am cool. My arms are cool and my legs are cool. I am thinking these things, as I am driving. We're talk about brain time, these thoughts, from the beginning of the post and through the next paragraphs were thought in the time it took to type "This is how."

My arms are cool, did I pack enough my hoodies, for evenings? Yes, I have, but I know it's going to be hot and I only have two pair of pants, and will that be enough but I also remember I have long pajamas as well as short, and if it does happen to be cool in the morning, I can wear those.

But what about my feet? I have flip flops but not my cold weather slippers, will I regret that? But no, because when I get up in the morning I can come downstairs and keep my feet warm in front of the fire because Dad will have already --

And my eyes well up because I have surprised myself again.

We hadn't even left Cleveland Heights.

Father passed in February. Upon learning of his death, the proprietors of Flood's Cove made the trip to Friendship to pull the chair he would sit in out of storage and place it on the porch in his honor. That was beautiful. It meant a great deal to know it was sitting there for him.

We're all here, Mom, my bother and his family, and even my niece from England, on her own. It's very hot. I have all I need. I am glad we are all here.

Distance: 3 miles
Avg Pace: 8:31

Route: Martin Point

Yes, It is my birthday. Today I am forty-eight years old. Big first day, much reading and resting but also an excursion to mackerel fish from the motorboat. I manned the boat, the boy did the fishing. In the old days he was content to fish from the dock at high tide, but now we must trawl. He is eleven, he can manage is own line, entirely, and any fish he catches.

I manage the boat. I can manage the boat, but I find it stressful, so much so that I pulled a muscle in my shoulder. Before my birthday dinner we had our first wine hour of the season (our last wine hour was Dad's birthday) and by the time the meal was over I was headachy and very sore.

What to do? Take a run. It was either that or go to bed, right? After two days of driving and all the time not running lately, it was arduous and invigorating. Very glad I went out.

Did not go all the way the end of Martin Point, just far enough to log three miles. It's too darn hot.

My co-workers have made a tradition of going out for ice cream on my birthday ...
... when I'm usually on vacation. Thanks for the photo, guys!

Today I feel the gray pulse in my head.

Forest Hill Park Swan
Almost six years ago, when I broke the news to my family over dinner that Harvey Pekar passed away, my son surprised us all by breaking down in tears. He had just met him at the pool a few days earlier. My son was five.

"I wanted to see him again!" he bawled.

It was the most simple, honest and heartfelt way I had ever heard to communicate grief. And it's what I have been coping with this week. After the celebrations, the dinners and memorials, sorting through clothes and writing eulogies and letters, I find myself driving the Shoreway or sitting at my desk or making breakfast and suddenly choking up and sobbing.

He was always here. Now he is gone. I wanted to see him again. Now I never will. Never again.

Distance: 3.65 miles
Avg Pace: 7:36
Duration: 27:45
Route: Forest Hill Loop

Just another less than satisfying Saturday afternoon, waking headachy, slouching about, napping ... I have been, continually, without enough sleep. I developed a neck strain and a tic in my right eye during the last week, the tic comes and goes, and the pain in my neck or shoulders.

Stress, to be sure. Unhappiness, sorrow coalesces into depression. A colleague suggests it is rest I need. But how can I rest when sleeping after dawn almost consistently gives me terrible sinus pain?

The wife says I need to see a doctor. It's allergies. It's dust mites.

I don't care. I just don't care very much. Not right now. Not about anything.

Temperature: 36°
Climate: cool with very light snow
Pavement: mostly dry
Weight: 163 lbs.

Amazing how a run can clear my head, clear my sinuses. Clean air, exercise. Filling my head with freshness. I did not want to run in the cold, I was looking forward to it getting warm again, which they say it will and shortly. But today the cold was just what my poor head desired.

I feel a little better.

We never lost control.

Headaches have returned. I have always had headaches, debilitating headaches. Beginning when I was around 12 and continuing until about ten or so years ago they could become something like migraines, and perhaps that's what they were. They had symptoms in common with migraines, and they could render an entire day useless.

Recently I was sorting through Christmas cards and found some photographs which had been filed away with them, pictures of the children with Christine at the Chicago children's museum.

Attending the perinatal bereavement conference in Chicago in 2006, I successfully performed I Hate This on Friday and woke on Saturday with a full-on headache that became a torrid migraine, complete with the shivers and blinding flashes of painful light. Christine and her sister graciously offered to take the kids for the entire day while Toni attended conference events and I curled up miserable in our hotel room.

It has been some time since I have suffered like that. After numerous consultations and even an MRI of my head, the cause of my pain was inconclusive. I took medication for migraines which were perhaps fifty percent effective. I decided at one point to simply listen to my body, and try to determine the causes of the pain, when it happened, and what may lead up to them.

Alcohol, perhaps. But not always. Dehydration, yes, so I tried drinking water in the middle of the night and that helped, sometimes. Sleeping too warmly was often a factor. I cannot sleep with socks on, that will nearly always give me a headache. Broken sleep was also an issue. Having infant children who needed changing or imply to be lulled back to sleep was, I believe, a major factor in my frequent migraines in the mid-aughts.

Then there was the fact that the pain generally localizes in my sinuses. I began taking pseudoephedrine at the first sign of pain, and that generally works, taken with pain reliever.

For almost a year, however, and with increasing frequency, I have been waking with swollen sinuses and head pain that lasts into the day. And as I found so terribly irritating and unhappy-making back in the day, so often these headaches occur on days when I do not have to work.

Monday through Friday I wake up fine, Saturdays and Sundays, or holidays ... headache. I had one yesterday. I was hydrated, I slept cold, I had had one alcoholic beverage, nothing unusual.

Except sleeping until eight. We traditionally get up around five or five-thirty. Went to bed Friday night around midnight, woke up at eight. Complete night of sleep, only three hours without coffee, two hours in daylight. I had a headache yesterday which hung on until I went running in the afternoon.

This morning I set the alarm, something I am loathe to do on a Sunday. I woke at seven am. I already felt a slight stuffiness, and wanted very much to go back to sleep, but then I just kept reminding myself that my head hurt a little and I got up, drank coffee, did some dishes, and my pain went away.

Just can't sleep in. Can't stay up late, can't sleep in.

How many times have I told this story? Aren't you tired of this story?

I'm watching TV.

The girl at a slumber party, the wife took the boy to wrestling in Mentor. A morning to myself. To catch up on Daredevil, take a run, then write and perhaps organize the attic.

Last night the boy and I started watching Futurama. When it first came out, almost seventeen years ago, I wasn't interested. I watched a few minutes of one episode and thought, meh. How long can this go on? Why do I find it so much more amusing now?

The boy and I made dinner together last night, and we compared the Futurama Theme by Christopher Tyng to PsychĂ© Rock - the Fatboy Slim version. I was of the understanding that Tyng was inspired to create his based on this track, which is only partially correct.

The original PsychĂ© Rock is a piece of electronic psychedelia from 1967 by the French composer Pierre Henry. Got to love that French electronic music.

Feels exactly like this.
Cosplay Green Lantern hitting you in the face with her ring.
First day back at work ... and I have a headache. Should not have been surprising, different atmosphere. And lack of rest, for several days I have been rising by the alarm then spending very long days either moving and doing or in active stress positions like driving a car for hours and hours.

Tuesday morning I had planned an eight-mile run but we had guests Monday night and I was up much later than I should if I am going to be able to make these runs part of my schedule. I woke at 5 AM with the same headache I'd had the entire day before. Water, pain reliever, back to bed to rise at six feeling better, but so goddamn tired. Screw it, I am getting rest, went back to sleep for another hour.

But that left me feeling defeated and depressed.

What Do Runners Think About? Here's The Sad Truth
It turns out that long-distance runners mostly think about how miserable running is, according to new research. - HuffPo 8/10/2015
Where do I start? I think everyone spends all their time thinking about how miserable they are.

Seriously, though. My thoughts on today's run:
  • My right calf is a little stiff.
  • Hey, look - five deer!
  • Thanks for this water stop.
  • My city is beautiful.
  • God, it feels good to run today.
