Stranger roads than this one.

March passed with barely a headache. But now I have sinus pain every day. Wednesday afternoon my face felt worse and worse and I ended up crawling into bed all evening. Long night’s sleep, though.

Distance: 1 miles
Duration: 10:08
Route: one time around the block
Temperature: 47°
Climate: overcast & mild
Pavement: dry

Also? I have decided I do not like running in forty degree weather anymore. Like, for the duration. But hey, since I started running one milers, I guess I should.

Mr. Beerbelly.

Let’s talk about vertigo. It developed some time last year, and then went way. I did the exercises, which I think helped? But it just stopped. It's back, though. Lying down, sitting up, very disorienting.

Distance: 3.75 miles
Duration: 38:11
Pace: 10:10
Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 64°
Climate: perfect
Pavement: dry
Mood: very good

For years I might wake up with a sinus headache and think, this is my fault because I had a drink the night before. And yet, I woke this morning feeling that way and I had not. It was from sleeping too warm. Lasted all day, too.

We can change the world.

Kill me.
We go days without drinking alcohol. None. It has been several days, including weekends. Friday night, soda water. Saturday morning, the headache. The Saturday morning headache. The day ruining headache.

Usually, when I have this kind of head pain I think it must have had something to do with alcohol, and in that way I can work up a real, Puritanic guilt. I fucked up This is my fault. That is an unhealthy way to think, anyway. But in this case, it's just false.

I spent most of the day in bed dozing. What a waste. At least I was able to read. And the turth is, it kept me from running. I think these joints need a day between runs, one day at least.

The mornings are cooler. It is the golden time for running -- and also sinus headaches.

Moving in time and space.

Here and now.
Late night Tuesday night. Hot bed, long pajamas. Sinus headache. Not fair. Tried to catch a few more minutes of sleep, just ended up with a more troubling headache and no time to run. Oh dear, missed a day. Hum.

Recently I began measuring my breakfast cereal according the "serving size" on the side of the box. One cup of Raisin Bran to 1/2 cup milk. It is less than I am accustomed to eating, but it perfectly satisfies.

Temperature: 57°
Distance: 3.38 miles
Avg Pace: 7:52
Climate: cool, breezy

Loving the new shoes. Haven't stretched in two days. Stretching or writing, you must choose. So far I have been managing well ... however, one pleasant side effect of performing the stretches is that it has toned my linea semilunaris in a most pleasing way, and in a fashion sit-ups or crunches do not.

Upon your imaginary forces work.

Show your stuff or let it be.

I'm taking a ride with my best friend.
Have you noticed? The running is now happening.

The newer, cranberry clown shoes, the ones with the treads, are not holding up as well as my green ones have. They are beginning to crack and split on the top. They are made of some material which is less forgiving than the others, which is odd because other than the treads they are virtually identical.

Temperature: 48°
Distance: 5.15 miles

Brisk, wet day. Sidewalks mostly clear, though there were some major puddles to deal with. Again, my back issues mean I run upright - the way they always say you should - with my feet striking the pavement mid-step. We turn our weaknesses into strengths.

Baseline: 178.5 lbs.
Today: 175.5 lbs. (-1.5)
Goal: 170 lbs.

The sinus opening strips are very effective, and do make my head feel clear. However, I need to remember to bring a tissue on cooler days like this, my nose was like a drainpipe.

Who needs to think when your feet just go?

The week ahead looks promising, highs in the 40s. Fatigue has set into several large muscle groups. I haven't been doing stretches as often because of long nights and early mornings, but in general that hasn't been an issue.

Temperature: 39°
Distance: 4 miles

Crusty, slushy, even ,treacherous, murderous pavement. But a glorious day. My injury keeps my back straight as I run, can't really lean over to drive anymore, but that's probably a good thing. It makes hills difficult ... but then, hills are difficult when they are coated in ice. So I walked those.

This week will be interesting, should I get out. Heaps of icy, jagged snow on either side of the sidewalk, holding in the flood waters.

I have been having great sinus pain this past week, no doubt due in part to the change in the weather. Screaming I wanted to die on Friday morning, not a joke, the pain and sickness was excruciating. It has been many years since a headache has caused me to vomit.

The wife picked up Sinus Opening Strips™ because we were out. So deceptively simple, and useful. I had one on this morning, pretty much forgot about it but my head is clearer than it has been for some time.

Hmn. Feels like I need to do some back stretches.

I'm a genius, genius.

I do not know why we went to bed Friday night at midnight. I cannot tell you what happened that would have made that possible. What I can say is that I had to work yesterday (yes, a Saturday) and rising at six o'clock was a new, fresh hell, my face feeling as though a small, fat child were sitting on it, after having first hit it with a hammer.

And it only got better incrementally, and never entirely. Last night I begged off my family at 8 PM, or more accurately, said I wanted to go to bed but was finally ordered to. I really wanted to spend the evening with them, I wanted social time with my wife and kids. Not going to happen.

So I slept from 8 to 11, then couldn't sleep for an hour, and then stayed more or less at rest until 7 AM when she woke me and I thought WTF? Really? She let me sleep for another two hours.

My new year's resolutions are not coming to fruition, but then, I have been working pretty much since New Year's Day. Keep them in mind. However, if reports are correct. the earth has waited for the holidays and the arbitrary demarcation of the new year to pass before socking us with another winter of the Deep Death Freeze.

The annual runs will be few and far between this week, I can tell. I do not feel like running right now, but if not now, when? Again, I will keep it short. This is what we call paying it forward - to yourself.

Temperature: 46°
Distance: 2 miles

No rain at the moment, little wind. A breezy, cool, new day. One resolution this winter is to plot and execute more weight-bearing exercises. The wife noted how disciplined I was when training for the running play. When I think of that period, I do remember trying to make sure my lanky body (I weight thirty pounds less six years ago than I do now) looked sinewy and not all loose and flabby, but also that I was recovering from an operation on my knee - that came first. Late fall 2008 was spent rising very early in the morning to do physical therapy, at a clinic and also at home. Every morning.

Exercise, every morning. Not the year I have had so far.

As long as we are destined to be housebound in the foreseeable future, I intend to add free weights to the wii fit routine. A little will do a lot.

Madman on the run.

Today is the New York City Marathon. It had occurred to me to apply, last year the race was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, so I imagined this year would be a very special celebration.

However, when Double Heart was accepted into the New York Fringe Festival, that kind of settled that. Do you know how much it costs to enter the New York Marathon? It's a lot, not including transportation and housing, etc. One trip to New York a year is about all I can swing these days.

47 degrees in New York City right now, with a projected high of 50° Not bad, a little cool. Sorry I can't be with you, but welcome home.

Temperature: 45°
Climate: excellent, cool and bright
Distance: 3.25 miles
Weight: 175.5 lbs.

Last year at this time I was suffering from several successive days of sinus pain and headaches. Remarkable, I have been enduring the same symptoms the past several days, today only feeling minor discomfort. Not remarkable, I guess, just a passing of the season, but it is the exact same weekend.

Bit winded today. Maybe it was the pulse-pumping playlist, maybe I should have worn sunglasses.

The pain that grows dark.

I want to go to cool places with you.

Thirty years ago I had a life-altering experience. Summer 1983 was spent washing dishes and cleaning up at a local diner, hanging around the comic books store, and watching as much MTV as possible, for fear I might miss something important.

August meant marching band practice, and pool night that summer, the summer before my sophomore year, was much like the year before. I was with the exact same people -- my friends -- cannonballing, splashing, pushing people in. Horseplay. I was fifteen and still acting like a kid.

Maybe an hour into the festivities, one particular crew walked in late, and to me it was like one of those slow-motion moments when that cool gang walks down the street. In this case the soundtrack would probably be Robert Plant's Big Log.

In the lead was the lead snare, with him that trumpet player -- both now seniors and always wearing shades. One Rockette from my grade, her boyfriend, also trumpet and a senior, and the new girl, the tall one from Kansas, also a sophomore, the cymbal player.

Only tonight she was wearing a white two-piece. No one wore bikinis in Bay Village in 1983.

I was fucking blinded. I mean, brain-blinded. It's like some one slapped me in the face, trying to wake me up. You spent the summer in front of the TV, you're a teenager for God's sake, get busy!

It wasn't just the bikini, it was the entire picture. Jumping off the high drive screaming like an asshole suddenly didn't interest me anymore. Keeping my eye on them, I made sure to notice when they were making to leave, and when the snare drummer picked up his stuff, I ran up and asked if he was headed out.

When he said yes, I got down onto my knees and begged, "Wherever you all are going, please take me with you."

He raised his eyebrows and smiled. "No problem, guy."

Temperature: 75°
Climate: cool breeze, but humid
Distance: 5.15 miles
Weight: 170.5 lbs.

Since Saturday I have had a sinus headache, every single day. Last night it was a full-blown migraine, covering the left half of my face, in my ear, my jaw, across to my nose, up and through my eye to the crown of my head. Horrible. It's been a long time, over-the-counter sinus medication has taken care of most attacks since I decide to cover them that way. But not Monday. Not yesterday.

Today it started after sitting in front of the screen at work for two hours, and the rehearsal hall does not help either, filter light and filtered air. They let me go early from work as the pain began to work its way from behind my right ear.  It has subsided a bit, and now, hopefully, some aerobic work will help clear my head.

Too tired for having fun.

September is hard. This year in particular, as we are camped out on an air mattress in the living room for the duration. Until our bed is set up in our new bedroom, sleep here we must. Until the girl's bedroom is finished, we will never set up our bed in our new bedroom.

James and Eva came over on Tuesday to sand the floor, but my schedule has been prohibitive. Our schedules have been prohibitive.

My wife began a new teaching job, so I am taking care of all morning preparation -- breakfast, lunches, transportation. Then nine hours of residency rehearsals, then surviving until bed, we all managing musical lessons, soccer games and dinner. That's fall.

And just in time, seasonal sinus attacks kick in and that makes my head hurt.

Man. I feel like I've gained ten pounds since returning from New York. I wish there were some way of measuring that.

Temperature: 70°
Climate: cool & overcast
Distance: 3.25 miles
Weight: 175.5 lbs.

That was glorious, cool, early fall run. My head is clear, I am in good spirits, and ready to stain the floor.

I mean, literally. I have to put stain on a wooden floor.

We move into the perfect days of running, cool and crisp, not sweaty and muggy. If I can keep it together, this could be a productive season.

Eric Coble's The Velocity of Autumn is currently in previews at Arena Stage. I remember eighteen months ago when we began rehearsal for that play at Beck Center. The tour of Styles had just opened, when we began rehearsals for Velocity. I was also in training for the 2012 CLE Marathon.

One day in late March I ran twenty miles, and that evening I had a performance. These things can be done. Move forward.

We have so much to feel good about.

 Good Omens.

Several mornings (too many mornings) I have had sinus pain. Change of season, too little and interrupted sleep. Painful pressure in my face. Large glass of water, four ibuprofen, and one pseudoephedrine. It walks me into my days.

Last night, upon retiring, I remarked how bad my sleep was the night before and the wife pops out of bed stating, "I'm getting you a sleeping pill." By this she meant an allergy medication,
diphenhydramine. Better living through OTC illness medication.

I must say, I slept better last night than I have in at least a week. This is my idea of a "good" Friday.

1. Morning rehearsal for medical improv.
2. Take a run.
3. Spend the afternoon and early evening with my family at my parents' house.

Temperature: 41°
Climate: Sunglasses! Thank you.
Distance: 3.25 miles

How are you feelin' today, Harvey? Better, thank you. Better. I would like to imagine that I could feel this calm and settled during the middle of the week ... though the truth is I often feel anxious and out of sorts on the weekend, so I don't suppose it makes much difference what day it is today.

As the man pointed out yesterday, it should be beautiful spring (I almost wrote "spring-like" ... it IS spring, dammit) weather through the entire weekend. So running would be ideal, if not for my hamstring, which I feel, depending on the day, from my heel through my ankle, my heel through my calf, or like today, from my heel through my thigh.

This pain abates considerably after about five hundred yards, and maybe I will be able to ignore it all day. Tomorrow, however, I will get out of bed limping again. However, I feel (physically) much better than I did early this month when I was running little or not at all, and my diet has improved considerably, without really thinking about it.

It helps that I keep little or no cash on hand when I am at work, which prevents my suddenly dashing to the lobby for a candy bar or a soda pop. And then there are the menus my wife and children plan, which are by and large really, incredible awesome. Ginger-lentil soup? Yes, please, and thank you.

It also helps that right now in my car stereo is disc three of Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals.

You got the moves. So let's see them.

After more than a week, I was yearning to go for a run. I had become depressed and unhappy. But by evening last night, my eyes were aching, and my ears felt stuffed, my head full of painful density.

But I suited up, and headed out. The first ten paces were wonderful. Then I felt the weight of my stomach, I felt heavy and unwieldly. After a few houses I was overwhelmed by fatigue, and the pain behind my eyes, weighing on my head beginning to swell.

I knew that if I could just keep going, this would pass. I turned the corner, and my temples began to throb, and them my entire head was biting with pain. I slowed to a walk, pulled off my kerchief, rubbed the space between my eyes, breathed deeply and step by step I headed home.

Four pain relievers, two Benadryls, and a trippy night's sleep. When I woke the pain was still there.

Oh, the great turn of the season.

Am I original? Am I the only one?

Cleveland Rocks, indeed.

Really? Two and a half weeks? Really? And what a two and a half weeks it has been. It would be truly sad if I had actually wanted to run, but couldn't. Honestly, not only is this the first day in all that time I have had the opportunity to run, it is the first time I have wanted to.

What have been up to? Well, read all about it. I have averaged somewhere between five and six hours on weeknights, and weekends have also been wall-to-wall busy. And then there's all the snow and ice that have covered the sidewalks and streets, makes it easy to put it off. Not like I have to run 13.1 in two months. We'll get it there.

It has been sunshine and happiness the past two days - except for the nasty headache I had today, that was awful. But hey, five miles? Pshaw, I smirk at your puny five miles.

The best of times

Thanks for all the supportive comments about today's appearance on AROUND NOON. Those of you who missed it can still podcast or stream it from their site.

I misunderstood the run-down of the show, and thought I would be returning to the mic following the performance - as a result, I failed to mention the supporting voices by name. They are actor-teachers from Great Lakes Theater Festival, and had featured appearances in this order:

Nathan Ramos, Annie Hickey, Steve West, Tim Keo and Carrie Williams.

As we did with the radio drama for I HATE THIS, I thought additional voices would provide more context to the reading than just doing it all myself. That doesn't mean it wasn't confusing, but hey, it was live, an experiment, and hopefully fun to listen to. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

The broadcast is worth it for the performances of Joe McBride alone. Heidi Klum has your number, friend.

Noble to Home

Crappy morning, very difficult to sleep last night, my sinuses plugged up, woke with the origins of a migraine which are still within me - I have a nail in my right eye and a queasy feeling in my stomach - though running cleared my head greatly, I am hoping this is an upward progression ... it is going to be a long, full day. I have work, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards and then a rehearsal of my wife's play for the benefit this weekend.

It's our local Father's Walk to School Day, so at 6 AM I drove to my girl's school, parked, ran home (the long way) and will shortly walk her to school before driving to work. The best of times.

Sinuses!

For a week now, I have been struggling with a swollen head. Fluctuations in temperature and air pressure, illness, bad sleeping habits ... last night I went to bed with my socks on. It's fundamental, sleep with my socks on, wake up with a head like a pumpkin.

I've been eating so much Sudafed they have my picture of at all the local Walgreen's.

A week projected to be in the 40s. Keep it up, little Pengo. It's winter again.
