More whining about warts.

Comments: Ugh. There's this burning spot, the size of a quarter, on the pad of my right foot. Acid. Mmmmm.

Googled "Plantar Warts" for the first time ever yesterday. Dr. J (not the Dr. J, just a Dr. J) - also a runner - tried the duct tape route, and it worked! Just like that! Well, good for him.

Plantar-warts.com wants to give you the impression that some happy soul (sole?) took it upon themsleves to actually register a domain name just to spread the word about how successful Dr. Scholl's Clear Away One-Step pads are at defeating Plantar Warts.

Plantar Warts Bsics informed me I have "mosaic" plantar wrts.

WebMD braced me for the possibility of surgery, and how it would be executed (didn't need to know that.)

Anyway, I've just had it. I didn't intend to keep a runner's blog so I could moan about these things, but they are crimping my style. And I risk injury every time I go out for a run dealing with them. Overcompensating for the pain in the ball of one foot is no way to run, and I have to go slow so I don't pull anything. But this is where I am right now. Sigh.

Comments: Granted, I have an iPod which looks like it is a hundred years old. It's not scratched or beat up or anything. It's just kind of big. It's the second generation of iPods, a bit thick - it's only 10 GB. Compared to a Nano it's a tub of butter. But it's mine and I love it.

From an early age I wanted to listen to music as I ran. I don't remember the first time I took a Walkman running, it may have been as late as the early 90s. Keeping it clipped on my running pants was pointless, unless I wore a leather belt or something, it was like hanging a brick from your pants. So I wond up the cord and held it in my hand. Like holding a brick in your hand.

An iPod can be dangerous. I never ran a race wearing one until late 2004. I wanted to finish a 5 K in around twenty-one minutes, and I thought even that was pushing it. Three seven minute miles back to back? And the course included one very stupid hill. I couldn't do it.

Well, I could do it. Thanks to high BPMs I ran it in nineteen-something. Crazy. Broke twenty minutes, thanks to Apple technology.

Got my wife a Nano for her birthday. It's sleek and slim and small. I think I am going to start stealing it.

Comment: One of the side-irritants on my attempting to run on a damaged foot last summer, was that I pulled a muscle from my right buttock through my thigh. That's when I kind of gave up. I was being ridiculous, and obviously not doing the right thing at all. It is still a complaint (and aren't I full of them) though today, walking down the hall at work, I realized it wasn't singing, which it has been since I resumed running.

To celebrate I ran three miles. It's already easier. Three miles is a good daily distance. Three miles, three days a week. For the time being.

Comment: So. Four years ago (I think, it may have been longer) I noticed these two hard bumps on the pad of my right foot. If only I had dispatched them then. By the time I realized they were not, as I had believed, small bits of glass that had imbedded themselves in my foot (not strange - it's happened to me before) but rather PLANTAR'S WARTS, it was too late.

I have used pads. I have used straight Compound W. I even went to my doctor, who obviously knew nothing about the condition and tried to remove them anyway - by injecting novacaine directly into the warts (okay, that was maybe the worst pain I have experienced in my life to date) and then scraping part of them away (that was the second most painful thing that's ever happened to me.)

That was in January. I have not gone to her since, and am currently looking for a new general practitioner.

I saw a specialist, who was very nice, but lived too far away. He recommended epsom salt baths (uh, just for the foot) and duct tape. But I didn't follow that remedy very religiously, it was a bad time, I was about to have another child and there was just no discipline as far as my feet were concerned, I was still getting over the fracture.

In the meantime, all of these various, failed treatments have exacerbated the condition, wheras I used to have two small warts, I know have four parge ones, clustered in a very sensitive area.

TMI? Your problem, you don't need to read this.

I am currently 1) using an epsom salt bath following runs 2) utilizing Compound W and 3) duct tape. That's working well, so far, as just yesterday a large piece of skin came off, revealing the "footprints." The first time I used acid on them, I stopped after the first layer of skin came away, thinking the footprints were just some residual thing. Now I know they are part of the wart, and mean it's still there, and angry.

Am I going to lose my foot? Can anyone explain to me what's the appropriate action?

Of course not. I have no followers yet. After this post, I may never.

Comment: Well, that went much better. Still feel the tub that is my tummy slogging me down. Not too sleek. After Tuesday, my shins were screaming. Actually, that because of a strange reaction to some otherwise always very comfortable dress shoes, but the pain subsided considerably when I was out of them. Didn't affect today's run.

I could have gone without the "butter beanie" today, but coming off a cold-induced earache/sore throat, I thought it best my ears were also covered. The beanie is, in fact, a bike helmet liner, or at least I believe that is its intended use, but the guy at Geiger's recommended it for running and he was right. It is thin, covers a great area snugly, and is very warm without being oppressive. I wonder how it will hold up in the terrible midwinter - right now we are in a reprieve which will no doubt end tomorrow.

Resolution

Last year was to be the one when I ran a marathon. I had gotten myself into a regular training routine, and had the mind to do it. Then a (minor) work-related injury left me sidelined, and it has taken me this long to resume - or to begin to resume - regular exercise.

To that end I went out yesterday and bought lots of stuff, including a pair of Adidas Supernovas (10 1/2) a Mountain Hardware Butter Beanie, and a new jock strap (Bike.)

Comment: Oh, this is going to be hard.

Bad News: 10 lbs. overweight, with a compulsion to eat everything in my reach. Just yesterday I scarfed down some four M&M cookies. Today it was fried crap from BK.

Good News: There was a period last year when I doubted I would ever run again. The plan is to run no more than three days a week, and only for short distances, until the first day of spring. It will be a difficult road back ... but it's been harder than this before.
