Run for the hills. Run for the trees.

I had a fantasy about running the LES while we were out of town, but I also wanted to sleep in, to go with whatever the plan might be. Also, the forecast was for cold. It had snowed several inches the day before we arrived and the sidewalks and streets were sludgy and slippery.

I made the right decision by not bringing my kit, and I did not regret that one moment. Sometimes you have to surrender to the reality of the situation.

Distance: 4 miles

Now it is the new year, with new plans, new promises. For example, I promised I would remain 160 lbs. And I would also like to lean get it) into losing another five.

March Mildness

We're trying something new, something radical. It has been a challenging season. Not terrible, I know terrible, it has not been terrible. But it slouches towards malaise. And poor health. Bingeing junk food. Drinking, not to excess, just consistently. And little no exercise.

Some do the "Dry January" thing, which I cannot get on board with. I respect a New Year's resolution, I have even made them. But January is a month made for drinking, and I will not compromise that.

Others "give up" things for Lent, and that is also very nice. Occasional, considered, voluntary abstinence can lead one to appreciate the world and one's place in it. But I never know when Lent begins, much less when it ends.

So, I arbitrarily decided March would be the month I do something exceptional, to see how it makes me feel. This month I will run no fewer than six days a week, and I will abstain from the consumption of alcohol and "additional food" which I qualify as snacks or desserts.

The wife has called it "March Mildness." She does have a way with words.

Get out what's inside of you.

Yesterday's headache subsided, eventually. The run may have helped. Or not. I made a commitment to run every day this week, I want to run more regularly.

I will begin the "year runs" as soon as possible after New Year's. What is the point of ritual if you do not keep it?

Distance: 4 miles
Duration: 37:48
Pace: 9:26
Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 41°
Climate: overcast & cool
Mood: much, much better
Weight: 178.5 lbs. (+0.5)

I mean, I also had a headache this morning, but it went away.

Okay, so. One drink a day. One sugary treat a day (mostly). Controlling my intake. This weekend, anything goes.

I mean, really. This weekend we risk absolutely everything.

Lunch: tomato soup with rice, bread & butter
Treat: Reese's Big Cup w/Potato Chips (WTF???)
Dinner: pasta w/white sauce, salad

Let's go, left foot, right foot ...

The point of running is to run. Whatever else is happening, running will help.

New Year's Eve was spent at home, much like it was last year, at home, grazing on cheese, crakers, bits of fruit, hummus and pita, and some generous but not terribly indulgent cocktails and bubbly.

The difference was the girl was with us, the boy spent the evening at a friend's house. We binge-watched The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It means a lot to her to share this with us, and it's fun.

But staying up late does not work for me. I love New Year's Eve, because it is our special night. We met on a NYE so many years ago. Last year it was important to be together, on our own. My mother lay dying across town. My wife an our togetherness made even more poignant.

What will happen? No idea. Hopefully I will muster the strength and desire to exercise, in spite of medication, to feel properly. I need this body to get it all done.

Ladies and gentlemen, we begin. 55 Playlists for 55 Years (1967-2021).

WAP - Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion
Straight to the Morning - Hop Chip ft. Jarvis Cocker

Well, damn. A bunch of great songs I never ran to last year.

Here's the deal. If I run solo, I will post a year playlist. If I am running with one of my children, I won't. There's no agenda, no need to get through all the playlists as soon as possible. If I am still listening to them in September, so be it. At least that means I will be alive in September.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 30:51
Pace: 9:56
Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 34°
Climate: cold, rainy
Pavement: wet with patchy snow and puddles
Mood: confident
Baseline Weight: 185 lbs.

Here's the thing. I never broke 170 last year. Never even made it to 170. But I should totally live at 170 lbs. Over that, I have pain issues. It is difficult to sit without pinching certain nervse. Prefereably I will live at 165 lbs., so I don't have to worry so much.

So that's the goal. 165 pounds, and to be there by the end of the year.

Can you show me where it hurts?

The New Year was an opportunity to do new, great things, to flip the script (as the kids used to say) but you know, I was pretty sure that was not actually going to happen. No real change in diet, on sporadic restraint in the sugar department. Exercise is not happening.

But it's early, you know? It's January. There are so many events flying about, so many plans to be made, and now it's cold. Perhaps we can pull it together, exhibit restraint. Because it's all about restraint -- about not doing the other thing, about concentrating on this better thing.

Deleting apps from your phone can be a revelation. It can also be short-lived, if you justify their return. Maintaining focus is a constant struggle. So do it! Enjoy the struggle! There is nothing for you there, it's all out here.

Distance: 3 miles
Route: Rec Center
Mood: all right
Exercises: yes

So, the last couple times I have tried a treadmill (at a hotel, at the urging of the boy)I have been unhappy. I have felt uncomfortable. I have felt, in a word, hot. Hot and uncomfortable.

This struck me as strange. Twenty years ago we had a membership at a gym, and I used a treadmill. It's how I got up to speed, in a manner of speaking. Built my strength, endurance, my ability to breathe. I quite around 2004, to run the roads, and never looked back.

Only today, using the track at the rec center, have a realized (duh) what the main difference is. It's air. I thought perhaps I was bored, running place, and that made me more aware of how heated I was getting.

But you get cooled when air is moving past you. Why have I never thought of this before?

Thank you. Next?

At my fiftieth birthday party last August, Chris, whom I run with, and his girlfriend Allie, who I occasionally also run with, gave me a very thoughtful birthday present. They would pay the entry fee for any race in 2019.

Now, Chris and I have run a couple (miserable, but for the company) half marathons together. But he has not yet completed a full, 26.2 mile marathon. I asked if we could run one of those together as my gift, and they agreed. We all three applied to the Chicago Marathon. Chris got in, Allie and I did not.

However, there are other opportunities to register for a marathon, most notably to join a fund raising team, and I do love raising money for a good cause. I am very happy to announce I was accepted into the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation "Team Challenge" for the 2019 Chicago Marathon, October 13, 2019.

Distance: 2.45 miles
Pace: 9:12
Route: Lee Road Loop

So, yeah. I spite of my last post, or rather because of it, I will continue to run. Not only run, but to marathon. This will be my fourth. I think I can make it. For the first time I will have a partner to run with, too!

But why the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation? Why this cause, why this fight? That is easy to explain.

My older brother Denison has lived with ulcerative colitis his entire life. I have watched him struggle for those periods when it has been most difficult to deal with, but I have also heard his relief as he has told me about recent and increasingly effective treatment, advancement that would not be possible without support and funding.

That's why.

My lead donor, of course, is Chris Fornadel, ponying up the fee for the race to the cause. Thank you, Chris and Allie! But I need your help. Visit my Team Challenge page, and kick in for a great cause and to get me to Chicago on time!

Resolution

I had completed fifty-two runs by April 5. I managed to run only another forty times the rest of the entire year. This has not been a good year for me physically. I wanted to lose weight, but I gained it. I am out of shape, weak and not very happy about it. I have for all intents and purposes stopped running entirely.

I brought gear to England and back without using it. I did not run over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Wasn't up to it, wasn't in the mood. How do I win this back?

It's not just vanity. My diet is horrible, and I do not wish to live the rest of my life in a health emergency. And I hurt to move.

These are steps in intend to take in the new year to improve my situation.

  1. Acquire a new physical therapist. Not happy with the former, and besides, we are in need of a new general practitioner now that University Hospitals fired not just ours but the entire office over a labor dispute (not cool, UH.)
  2. 10-20 minutes of exercise each morning. This is something I can do quite easily. Like writing a small amount each day, a little exercise daily goes a long way to improving my overall fitness and energy.
  3. Running short distances three times a week. This could include three mile runs, but even two laps around the block will improve my breathing and blood flow. Running every day, however, as I did at the start of the year, is not advised.
  4. Planning healthy menus. My wife has over the past several months has chosen a vegetarian diet. Neither the children nor I have been pressured into also adapting this lifestyle, but it will affect how we plan our meals. My efforts at non-meat based diets (going back to college) have resulted in an excessive intake of carbs, and that should be avoided. It does take good planning ... like all smart decisions.
We begin ... next week. See you then, and happy new year.

Stand back. Let me do my shit.

I made three running resolutions last year, and I kept two. I kept running, and I ran the Cleveland Half Marathon. But I wanted to keep my weight down between 160 and 165, and there I have not been very successful.

Is it important? Yes, it is. Two years ago I was warned about my weight and my blood sugar level. I need to control my diet, continue to eat less sugar. I will keep running, and I will work to control my eating.

Last year I started the year with fifty playlists from 1967-2016, this year I am expanding the lists in each direction, from 1966-2017. And so, ladies and gentlemen, let us begin 52 Playlists for 52 Years.

Set out later than I had planned, after dark. Can't run through the woods without light. Taking the city streets can be fun, except heading up Lee Road can totally wind me, sometimes. Like tonight. Still, not bad all things considered. Time to pass on desserts, less alcohol, smaller portions.

Yeah? Possible? Can we do this? I think that we can.

I'm a genius, genius.

I do not know why we went to bed Friday night at midnight. I cannot tell you what happened that would have made that possible. What I can say is that I had to work yesterday (yes, a Saturday) and rising at six o'clock was a new, fresh hell, my face feeling as though a small, fat child were sitting on it, after having first hit it with a hammer.

And it only got better incrementally, and never entirely. Last night I begged off my family at 8 PM, or more accurately, said I wanted to go to bed but was finally ordered to. I really wanted to spend the evening with them, I wanted social time with my wife and kids. Not going to happen.

So I slept from 8 to 11, then couldn't sleep for an hour, and then stayed more or less at rest until 7 AM when she woke me and I thought WTF? Really? She let me sleep for another two hours.

My new year's resolutions are not coming to fruition, but then, I have been working pretty much since New Year's Day. Keep them in mind. However, if reports are correct. the earth has waited for the holidays and the arbitrary demarcation of the new year to pass before socking us with another winter of the Deep Death Freeze.

The annual runs will be few and far between this week, I can tell. I do not feel like running right now, but if not now, when? Again, I will keep it short. This is what we call paying it forward - to yourself.

Temperature: 46°
Distance: 2 miles

No rain at the moment, little wind. A breezy, cool, new day. One resolution this winter is to plot and execute more weight-bearing exercises. The wife noted how disciplined I was when training for the running play. When I think of that period, I do remember trying to make sure my lanky body (I weight thirty pounds less six years ago than I do now) looked sinewy and not all loose and flabby, but also that I was recovering from an operation on my knee - that came first. Late fall 2008 was spent rising very early in the morning to do physical therapy, at a clinic and also at home. Every morning.

Exercise, every morning. Not the year I have had so far.

As long as we are destined to be housebound in the foreseeable future, I intend to add free weights to the wii fit routine. A little will do a lot.

Go! Go! Go! Go!

By Merrill Markoe, NYTimes 1/18/2014

I have to thank Mo for pointing out this piece in the Times which describes exactly the success I have been enjoying for the past several months. Humorist Merrill Markoe's experience involve being involuntarily bed-ridden, and I am grateful not to have made my discovery in that way.

"I had a vague idea for a play that I had tried to begin many times at 3 in the afternoon ..."

She was bored to tears, lying in bed at 6 in the morning, day after day, unable to walk, and chose to write, and discovered to her surprise that she wrote -- a lot. So have I, since November. It took about a month of dedicated practice (many, many thanks to my loving wife who brings me coffee every morning, apparently Ms. Markoe doesn't have that) before I moved from writing jibberish to composing dialogue.

Okay, "composing" may be a little florid. But writing is happening. I am half-awake, and yet when I return to what I have created, I am satisfied with what I read.

"Words come pouring out easily while my head still feels as if it is full of ground fog, wrapped in flannel and gauze, and surrounded by a hive of humming, velvety sleep bees."

The piece I am currently working on is so personal, I couldn't get it out if I were wide awake and fed. And it may be terrible, and never see the light of day ... but I have been thinking of writing it since 2010. Not kidding. Four years, thinking of writing something, without putting down a word.
Then it all came tumbling out and I have asked two actors to read the complete first draft out loud on Thursday. I resume the children's play I began at the end of last year. And there are stories buffered waiting for release.

Temperature: 30°
Pavement: Snow snowy snow - and slush!
Distance: 3.7 miles
Weight: 176.5 lbs.

More snow, and it will remain cold this week for little hope the sidewalks will clear, but it was all worth it to lift up my chin and look at the neighborhood, which was complete stunning. Thank you for that.

Also, that was a very satisfying run, and lifting up my knees to make the least splash through the sludgy puddles was exhilarating, and not exhausting in the least. Thank you for that, too.

You can run, you can run.

What I Have Been Doing Instead of Running:
  • Staying warm
  • Time with family
  • Work
  • Reading
  • Writing
These last two are key. I made a “New Year’s Resolution” for 2014, which is not something I traditionally do. There’s so much humor to be found (ha ha ha) in not keeping your resolutions, I thought as a young person they were pointless. Resolve to do what you mean to do when you decide it is necessary, arbitrary dates be arbitrary.

However, the new year coincided with a new desire, a deeply felt desire, in conjunction with an already recently established commitment, to wit;
  1. Read just before putting out the light.
  2. Write upon waking.
I have been writing, in long-hand, most mornings since October. The habit of writing, the very necessary habit of writing -- one which I possessed in the past, but lost -- has been hindered by the internet. Before the internet, I just wrote. Before I had a laptop with wifi, I just wrote. Access to the internet, virtually everywhere, has provided endless distraction.

The new rule is that my laptop is not permitted in the bedroom. I write on an honest-to-goodness stenographer’s pad, with a pen, every morning. Even when there is nothing to write, I write. And lo, there is something to write, and I am writing it. I have no idea if it is good, and that is a good thing. I am always so confident when I am writing, and often without cause. It is good to be unsure.

Reading, however, is the other important component. The internet has been a distraction from reading, and I should be a voracious reader. I can be, I was as a child, and in fits and starts as an adult. Reading before bed, it’s simple, and much more effective at lulling me to sleep than drinking.

The other day I completed The Tender Bar, and then I began Bring Up The Bodies. Memoir. Historical fiction. My wife and I had an interesting discussion after seeing Inside Llewyn Davis. She is not a fan of non-fiction, as it instills an artificial sense of order, or fate even, upon an unfair world. We only read about success, rarely if ever failure, and where this failure, there is always a reason.

One of my father’s favorite books is The Last Place on Earth, an excellent document of man’s race to the South Pole. Fate! Hubris! Success and failure, neatly explained. One of my favorites is Into Thin Air. My father and I like books about cold places and death, apparently. I digress.

Inside Llewyn Davis, which we both enjoyed (curse you, Academy) chronicles a story not told. We have seen Walk The Line and Ray and all those movies which describe the inevitably of success. These men were geniuses, in spite of their faults. Of COURSE they would become icons.

But, whatever. I like non-fiction. Perhaps they merely reinforce the Great Man theory of history. I see the thin ice upon which all decisions rest, and how all the preparation in the world cannot protect you from complete disaster.

Temperature: 23°
Pavement: thin layer of slippery snow
Distance: 3.25 miles
Weight: 176.5 lbs.

Seriously. You can't run west on Monticello without face gear when the weather is freezing. Why can I not remember this? I thought my face was going to harden and crack.

Resolution

No, I have not run since Thanksgiving weekend. There has been absolutely no exercise going on here. I do not weight any more than I did (holding steady at 167 lbs.) but I have changed shape. I have had daytime fantasies about doing a push-up, but it's always when I am walking from one place to another, when I am in a relatively private place and not in motion, it never occurs to me.

I need to drop in the middle of the hall in the Bulkley Building and give a good twenty crunches. Everyone would love to see that.

There are good reasons - actual, true, non-pathetic excuse good reasons not have run during large parts of the last month. I have been ill. Maybe you do not wish to read any further, but it is running and general health related. Previous I had a battle with extreme and entrenched Plantar warts, which grew all out of proportion and threatened to take over the world. I actually ran the 2006 NY Marathon with a mosaic on my instep and a smaller one on my big toe. The things we do for love.

With the assistance of talented doctors (unlike that quack who used to be my GP and tortured me when I first asked for her help in this matter) they were vanquished in 2008. I have actually blogged about that.

Recently however, I found a new on on the pad of my right foot (same foot! same, poor foot!) and decided that, rather than ignoring it as I had done with the previous incarnation, I would take matters into my own hands and treat it vigorously with medication left over from the previous skirmish.

Sorry for all the war metaphors. It is the only fighting I do. Me against skin viruses.

However, this time I was defeated by the medication. FORMALAZ is simply a solution of formaldehyde. And after a few weeks of successful treatment, one evening my foot blew up like a balloon. My left, too, puffed up and I could not sit up or walk. I was put on a series of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs and told not to exercise for a while. So I didn't.

It is possible this story has a happy ending - the wart may be gone. I am not sure, it's a wait-and-see game. But it is no longer an excuse not to be running.

Also, I have been writing. Actual writing, the first draft of the new script is largely intact, if not complete. Time I spend in the early evening or early morning is spent with children, being Christmassy, washing dishes, making excellent meals, being homebound and happy.

And again, there no longer exists a compulsion to move. My serotonins are successfully entering my neurons. I am without crippling anxiety.

However, this must stop. It is not healthy for me to be sedentary. I do not fit comfortably into my jeans - this has more to do with shape than weight. But weight is an issue. I have a target of 155 and intend to hit it by April 7 - if that is the opening date of my solo performances, though it may change, we haven't gotten final word on that.

A new year approaches. I want to join a gym and do running indoors, I think that may be a motivating factor. Resuming the outreach tour always makes me drop a few pounds. And once the holidays pass there will be more time.

Ha ha, that was a little joke. There is never more time.

But I am optimistic for 2011. How could I not be? The past year has been an emotional challenge, a professional challenge, a personal challenge, and a global challenge. I am pissed off and thrilled and confident and boy am I busy. And I like busy.

I also like running. I should do something about that.

What was I talking about?
