I'm not the kind of girl who likes to be alone.

We begin. A five-night run of I Hate This hosted in our own home. I've been wanting to bring this back to honor the 25th anniversary of the birth of our first child, and some time over the summer (probably when I was running) I got this idea.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 27:08
Pace: 8:45

FOREST HILL PARK UPDATE: Things are happening! Negotiations with Metroparks have reopened, and this week there has been a LOT of activity, pulling down rotten trees -- LOTS of rotten trees.

I will keep you updated.

Fall 1989 Mixtape
Sowing the Seeds of Love - Tears For Fears
Love Shack - The B-52's
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Bust a Move - Young MC
One - Bee Gees
Miss You Much - Janet Jackson

Yeah, let's keep jamming with the seasonal playlists. Fall 1989, I was emerging into final form. Confident as an actor, as a theater artist, evolving as a cartoonist. A bit more responsible, living in a solo apartment, less anxious in my personal relationships. I was twenty-one, something resembling a man.

Then I turned a corner, in a moment of inspired self-confidence asked out a young woman, and the rest of my life began.

The Old Man (cat) kept me up a lot last night, which is okay. He's a sweet old cat. He sleeps with me under the covers but needs to go to the bathroom a couple times. Better to get out of bed than go in the bed, I guess.

But also, we have a neighbor up the street, I'd heard about him, but never heard hi, he revs his engine, constantly, at two in the morning. Crazy.

I'll run away with you.

We've had a great running September. Tomorrow, I will be at a school at 6:50 AM, attending an event after, and then a read through of The Right Room. It will be a hyper-long day, so I am getting that run in now.

I also need to get new knee braces. The cool weather is doing me no favors.

Fall 1987 Mixtape
Faith - George Michael
True Faith - New Order
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Need You Tonight - INXS
Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode
Lips Like Sugar - Echo & the Bunnymen
Seattle - Public Image Limited

Sophomore year you come back and feel like you own the place. You know where everything is, you're running into all your old friends who you haven't seen all summer. You are confident, or in my case, a little too confident.

THEY SAY that 1986 was the worst year in the history of popular music, and that may be. Too much of it sounded the same, and the synthesizers had gotten entirely out of control. But 1987 was when so many artists popped for me, and they all seemed to have a new release that season.

This playlist is historic.

Lovely cool morning. We are having a dry season. Not a bad time for it, considering all the NA craft beer concerns which are popping up.

And we're home.

It's taken four years, but I have finally completed the first season of Zombies Run ... which debuted what? Fourteen years ago? We've been through so much, and yet it is as relevant as ever. Isn't that charming?

Cough Syrup - Young the Giant
Almost (Sweet Music) - Hozier
Jackie & Wilson - Hozier

Whoever created this playlist really likes Rainbow Kitten Surprise. But it’s a playlist. Skipped the Backseat Lovers song, which begins as a ripoff of Across the Universe and swiftly degenerates into childish wailing.

Somewhere deep inside something's got a hold on you ...

Shortly after Crowded House released their second album, Temple of Low Men, I encountered my former roommate who said he had been listening to it. I asked him how it was and he said, entirely deadpan, "It's terrible."

I said, "Oh. I heard that. That's a shame."

He responded with some irritation, "What? Where did you hear that? It's amazing."

I sputtered something like, "Oh, I mean. Maybe I didn't? I don't know. Cool."

This says all you need to know about both of us.

Anyway, it's the best album of the 1980s. Top five, at least. Maybe? I don't know. I love it.

"No skips" is a thing people say, but it's rarely true. There's always some weak track.

There isn't a single song on this album I could skip, for anything. So, four miles.

The big yard sale weekend. This is all I have been working on the past few weeks. Not true. I have been dedicated to the job, and to the creative work, and to clearing out the house, and to, and to, and to.

But. And. Flash thunderstorms notwithstanding, it has been successful. Cash to be made. Materials to be moved out. My attic had not has such space in some time.

Really, there's so much shit in my attic. Is this a metaphor? Perhaps it is.

It should also be observed that a lot of my caloric intake yesterday was in some form of alcohol.

The other side of summer.

Two days on the road, driving home. Lovely visit to Oneida to stay in the community mansion house, spotted a runner Saturday night and though, that looks nice. But taxing. I have had that dizzy feeling again recently, much of it to do with poor sleep.

So sleep we must.

Also, while I would like to create a list resolutions for the month of August, it is a question as to whether I will be able to stick to them.

However. I may run in Athens, Cincinnati and Chicago before the month is through. And wouldn't that be interesting?

Route: Forest Hill Loop

Summer 1991 Mixtape
The Other Side of Summer - Elvis Costello
Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J
Who? Where? Why? (The Crisis 12" Mix) - Jesus Jones
Pop Goes the Weasel - 3rd Bass
A Roller Skating Jam Named "Saturdays" - De La Soul ft. Q-Tip & Vinia Mojica
Kiss Them For Me - Siouxsie & the Banshees
Pure - Lightning Seeds

The best mixtape I ever made was the summer 1991 mixtape. Or maybe it wasn't, who knows. It was stolen the following LL summer, along with the minivan it was in. But I put a lot of time and love into that tape. Themes from sit-coms, snatches of porn films, and some truly amazing songs, chronicling a major transformation. A true beginning.

This is the race of the year!

Doubt comes in.
Took six days off and still managed fourteen runs in July, half of them here on the cove. What a month. No seriously, What. A. Month. And August, well. I have no idea.

Wednesday we drove to Augusta to see Hadestown on the big screen, after we had pizza at a local pizza place, it was packed on a Wednesday night. August is nice, the capital of Maine. It's like Portland only much, much ... smaller.

Okay, now this is thing is getting bogged down with live recordings, which can be fun, but live recordings always sound terrible. Unless you're Peter Gabriel. Also? Maybe it should be called "80s Inspired."

Last day in the cove. This was a respite. The next month is an unknown. I mean, a big unknown. I will spend a great deal on my own, in my own head. My sciatica has eased off since we arrived. I can stand and sit with minimal distress. The mattress here has been fabulous. How well will I run in August? How well will I sleep? Will I remain focused? Work is the great distractor, social media is not.

I will make myself positively occupied. I will see movies. I will attend plays. I will write. I will make plans for the house. I will prepare for the fall. And I will think of her.

My heart is heavy. My head is confused.

New read.
My birthday was okay. The best part was spending time with my wife. Taking a friend to the train station in the morning, lunch in Damariscotta. Then it was time to entertain the cousins, the family, all afternoon, all evening. This is where we see them, yes. But I do not feel relaxed in company at the moment. I really do just want to sit on the deck and read and write. Weird that my birthday (so far) has been the most stressful day of my vacation.

Completed a novel, Nosferatu by Jim Shepard (1998) a book I started a year ago and set aside, intending to return. It is not the story of Nosferatu: The Vampire, instead it is a fictionalized telling of the life of F.W Murnau, the director of Nosferatu (1921) and many other films.

I love the story of how things are made, in this case, silent film. I love Nosferatu, and indeed, the imagined journals of a queer German expressionist filmmaker.

Yesterday evening a few of us headed out to see a local theater production. Earlier this week, the wife and I took a wrong turn in Damariscotta and I was surprised to see a large banner advertising a stage adaptation of an early 20th century science fiction short story which I have a long personal history with, including producing a radio drama of Eric Coble's adaptation, and even making reference to it in And Then You Die.
“Man is the measure. That was my first lesson. Man's feet are the measure for distance ... his body is the measure for all that is lovable and desirable and strong.”
Hot take? Never write a letter-size page of director's notes to be inserted in the program, explaining what you meant and how the production came into being. That's what your blog is for. Telling people how to think about what they are about to see (single spaced, man!) just before they see it is never wise.

As for the production itself, it would appear that a very effective thirty-five minute adaptation, rich with movement and sound and style and passion, performed by high school students and intended for a high school audience, has been expanded to an hour and now includes laborsome tangential stories meant to provide additional modern relevance, to wit; opinions about Covid and Liberal government overreach.

I imagine the high school version was a hit, those young people deserved it. Wish I had seen that.

It seems my weaknesses just keep going strong.

Hey! Me, too!
We settle in. We relax. Long mornings on the deck. No rush. A day can last a long time, if you use it well. Or don't use it at all. The cousins visit, we stay right where we are. We drink, a lot. It's cool.

Monday we planned a brief excursion to Damariscotta, it took the day. That's how we roll, out by ten, or ten-thirty, back around three-thirty, then a nap. We did discover a new favorite spot, King Eider's Pub, so that's news. Our old favorite place there, the one with the Bigfoot iconography, that's under new management. Alas.

The evening spent drinking and reading. Oh, and we visited the library. All good.

Except our other child had their flight bumped two days because of air quality. That's life in the 21st century. Not happy about that.

The most alive I've ever been.

Friends and neighbors ... 60 Playlists for 60 Years.

2026 Playlist
The Arbiter - Bryce Pinkham and the Company of CHESS
NUEVAYoL (Live at Super Bowl LX) - Bad Bunny
The Great Divide - Noah Kahan
drop dead - Olivia Rodrigo
Dopamine - Robyn
Dry Spell - Kasey Musgraves
Dance No More - Harry Styles
Stampede - Genesis Owusu
Punk Rocky - A$AP Rocky

Yep, we saw Chess on Broadway at the end of last year and it was a good time, but most of what I really loved about it is not to be found on the original cast recording. Pinkham is a gas but he's not the best singer which is evidenced in this recording. The thing is, on stage that's part of the joke -- Me? The Narrator? I get a song? Oh, my!

I'd really like them to make available the single The Arbiter (I Know the Score) performed by Björn Skifs, a re-recording of the concept album version that includes a third verse:
As you settle down behind your pawns, power passes to me
You can play like Fischer, Karpov, Euwe, and Tal combined
I won't mind; please feel free

They all thought they were "the big fromage", but they don't have my clout
I control the match; I start it, I can call it off
Kasparov found that out

With one foot in the past.

"Bardo Pieta"
Joost Witte
Slept until nearly 10 am on Saturday, a surprising development. It was an exhausting week, I guess. I had not taken any manner of sleep aid on Friday evening (one beer at the movie theater, just one, even though the event was three hours long) but the deal with my car Thursday evening was surprisingly depleting and I had gotten up early to run Friday morning. It was a great day, altogether, and yet I slept something like eleven hours.

I have activated a Libby account, in a quest to expand my audio consumption. I have been listening to an awful lot of enjoyable but, in the long run, meaningless podcasts, for years. And as I thought of what to download first, I was reminded that I have often thought of the book Lincoln in the Bardo, like, I think of it a lot. I was even thinking of rereading it, it's been a long time since I have read something a second time.

To my surprise and delight, the audiobook is read by over one hundred different voices (Nick Offerman and David Sedaris being the main two voices, which is in itself uniquely fantastic) putting me in mind of one of my very favorite stories from This American Life, "The Unknown Soldier" by Lucy Sante.

People! Keep on running!

This is a poster I had in college.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are trash and I do not understand why they have been inducted into the Rock Hall but what can you do. We dug them at the beginning, because they played stupid white funk and we were stupid, white, funky guys.

Mother's Milk was their last good album (they've never produced a great album) which was followed by Blood Sugar Sex Magik for which Anthony Kiedis got the absurd notion that he could actually hold a note ("Under the Bridge") and was rewarded with a number one single. The rest is unlistenable history.

Good Time Boys

Knock Me Down (Long Version)
Taste the Pain

Johnny, Kick a Hole in the Sky

These things always fall apart at the end of the record, the two best songs are covers. Then Rick Rubin tells them, hey — you can fit 70 minutes of sound on one of these new compact discs. They can't even put together half that.

Run into you sometimes.

Oof. Some days I can feel my age. And then I ask myself, have I ever actually felt better than this? I have a hernia, that was thirty years ago. Thought I would need to wear compression pants the rest of my life, wore them about five years. What I learned was that if I gained weight (or wore boxers instead of briefs) I would hurt down there. So I try not to gain weight, and for the most part I haven't hurt down there in thirty years.

Now there's this thing in my wrist. I worry its a symptom of something great, like something to do wit my circulation. But then, maybe it's just muscular. I work out. I do upper body exercises. I have also made a doctors appointment, it's good to see how balanced my humours may be.

This is not a charade.

Forty years ago was a good summer. A very good summer, a special summer. My brother was home from college, he'd just graduated from college and was churning out resumes on a dot matrix printer from his Apple Macintosh. We bonded over Heineken, chips with good French onion dip and weed.

We watched Miami Vice reruns, Night Flight, and Dave Letterman. I learned about new artists, or new to me, anyway. The Cure. The Smiths. New Order. Fishbone. We watched strange videos, and laughed our asses off.

Live Aid, Back to the Future, Thunderdome, we made one DDT-V episode for July, and a second one for August, a clip show based entirely on the advertisements (that one was my idea). We had gone to Maine early in the season for my grandfather's 90th birthday, so the rest of the summer stretched out madly.

I was cited on my seventeenth birthday for trespassing in the Metroparks after dark (we had been playing assassin) and broke up with my girlfriend. I was ready to be a senior. And I was free.

Work your body.

Considering I missed six days, thirteen runs in a month is pretty good. Also, my ankle no longer feels sprained. My heel is no longer in pain. I got up the past two morning, and I didn't even think about my feet. Healing happens, still. Healing happens.

Since members of my family have gone, the time has gone much slower. I think this has more to do with second-week syndrome than anything about them. I was anxious, now I am not. I had been anxious for days -- weeks, actually -- prior to the festival. Then the festival, then ... here. Just here.

Day after day. Time after time. We will be home soon enough, today is for here.

First (Boy) Run/Walk
Distance: 2 miles

Today the boy taught me about the 1904 St. Louis Olympic marathon, the first Olympic marathon to take place on American soil, so naturally it was dangerous, ignorant, and racist.

Pace: 9:27

BorderLight | Fringe Unleashed Playlist
The Story Continues - Marco Lys
Street Life - Purple Disco Machine
Tití Me Preguntó - Bad Bunny
Treat You Better (Purple Disco Machine Extended Remix) - Rüfüs Du Sol
Work Your Body - LA Riots

I have gotten so used to playing only music I am already familiar with. Listening to this list is fun, my mind is free. I have had many ideas on these runs, I like the repetition, the dearth of lyrics.
