Showing out, showing out, hit and run.

Cleveland!
Twenty years ago today, June 27, 2006, marathon training officially began. I happened to be in Vermont, looking after the kids while the wife took classes, pursuant to her MFA.
"Out on RT 2, lush trees and mountains ... and the occasional semi. I'd try to find a path through the woods, but it rained for a day solid yesterday, I can't imagine any of them are at all dry."
A three mile run at 5:00 am in Vermont. Nice.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 28:37
Pace: 9:13

Brother comes into town this weekend. Time to clean up the house a little. Or at least the spare room.

He running the game.

Twenty years ago, on June 11, 2006, I received confirmation that I had been accepted into that year's New York City Marathon.
"How the hell does one train for a marathon? I have books, and have consulted websites, and yet I am still trying to figure out how to work it into the schedule. Not the race, the training."
This language, or something very close to it, was used in And Then You Die. I was very aware that I would be directing, which is to say directing a production of HAMLET, directing a production of Hamlet ON THE WEST SIDE OF TOWN at the same time I would be deep into training.
"I am going to have to spend the month of September going to bed at midnight and waking up at 4."
And indeed, I was.

These are the beautiful days. So often, we go straight from too cold and rainy directly to hot and torrid. These days are cool in the morning, but not too cool. Wrapped up on the deck, writing or reading, then parading about town in a light jacket. It's lovely.

And the runs are swell!

Two days dry. I think I woke for a moment in the night, and went right back to sleep. Slept until my alarm and woke refreshed, head clear, free of pain. It's a decision, the pleasant torpor of drink and drugs, or energy and awareness. I haven't wanted to be aware, for months.

You should feel invincible.

Maybe next time,
I'll be lucky.
On Wednesday, I received the announcement from the NYC Marathon that I did not make the lottery. I will not be going to New York this fall, at least, not to run in the marathon. There will be no 20 year celebration of my first marathon, I will not be attempting a fifth race, not this year.

Distance: 4.5 miles
Duration: 40:45
Pace: 9:03

I also resisted the temptation to sign up for a fund raising team. I told myself, if I do not get in, I am not going. Fund raising for Chicago made me culpable. Days before the race I knew it would not go well, but I felt responsible to the people who had donated, I had to run the race. I never want that to happen again, if I don't feel up to the race, I won't race.

Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 66°
Climate: beautiful, man. just beautiful
Mood: apprehensive

Because I have a show that weekend, Halloween weekend. When I signed up for New York, that was when I learned there would be a conflict. A November 1st race? Uh, okay. I'll put my foot in. We'll see what happens. It didn't happen. And that's fine.

Having said all that, I need to remember why I run. If I am not training, what am I running to? What am I running for? The running is its own reward. I remain fit. Noom helped me get to 160, and I have stayed there, it is the best weight for me to be. And since I quite the app (it does cost some money) I have maintained my eating habits, drinking water, and the exercise. And more exercise, the sit-ups, the push-ups -- not a lot, I'll never be muscular, and I don't need to be. But maintenance. Remaining fit.

And I enjoy the music.

I wanted to run yesterday. It was a beautiful day, but I had to work later than usual, and by the time I got home it was sundown. I no longer run outdoors after dark, it's just not safe. And by that, I mean I could trip or at the very least, run tentatively, afraid of running into something, and that can cause strained muscles and sore knees. Better not to.

It is also beautiful today.

Come on with me cruising down the street.

Deep winter malaise. But I followed up on the Marlowe biography by picking up Doctor Faustus. Plays count as books, right? I gave myself a goal, to read twenty books tis year. For some, that's nothing, but for me it's a stretch. That's right, I don't read enough. Something no one else has ever said in the history of the world.

Okay. We applied. Drawing is in one month, on Wednesday, March 4. Then I will worry about whether or not I can actually do it.

I feel adrenaline.

Trick-or-treat was a lovely success, there were fewer kids than usual but not by an extreme margin. However, it is disappointing to learn that neighbors on adjoining streets don't share in our attention. One of the folks just around the corner said he got ten children.

I can guess why, there is a concentration of houses with their lights on where we live, the side streets are spaced further apart and appear less occupied, or friendly. Last year, I started making a map of the houses that would have candy, only I'm afraid that might actually just go to further illustrate that point.

Our neighborhood needs to get to know each other again. It's been a long time.

The question … will I, can I join them next year?

Better run.

When Obama votes, he gets hit upon by pretty young ladies.
First things first. My friend Roger ran New York on Sunday. He had two goals:
  1. Finish without an injury.
  2. Finish in under six hours.
I think his first goal was actually just finish. In any even, he was successful on all counts, clocking in at 05:19:59 with an average pace of 12:13. Awesome!

Today my work colleague, the one who has been looking so fit lately, told me he ran his first 10 mile yesterday. Just inspired, he's gotten up to seven miles and yesterday was just such a perfect day he thought he'd try it.

We discussed his attempting a half marathon. Definitely doable. He should run the Cleveland Half next year.

And so here I am thinking I should run the Cleveland Half next year.

Madman on the run.

Today is the New York City Marathon. It had occurred to me to apply, last year the race was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, so I imagined this year would be a very special celebration.

However, when Double Heart was accepted into the New York Fringe Festival, that kind of settled that. Do you know how much it costs to enter the New York Marathon? It's a lot, not including transportation and housing, etc. One trip to New York a year is about all I can swing these days.

47 degrees in New York City right now, with a projected high of 50° Not bad, a little cool. Sorry I can't be with you, but welcome home.

Temperature: 45°
Climate: excellent, cool and bright
Distance: 3.25 miles
Weight: 175.5 lbs.

Last year at this time I was suffering from several successive days of sinus pain and headaches. Remarkable, I have been enduring the same symptoms the past several days, today only feeling minor discomfort. Not remarkable, I guess, just a passing of the season, but it is the exact same weekend.

Bit winded today. Maybe it was the pulse-pumping playlist, maybe I should have worn sunglasses.

Some kind of madness.

Last Spring I was contacted by an organization which claimed to be producing a series of videos for the 2012 ING NYC Marathon. Here was the pitch:
We're putting together a short web series about preparing for
the Marathon, featuring a group of runners representing a
range of backgrounds, styles, and levels of intensity.

We're currently casting the series, and wanted to see if you
were interested in being one of our personalities. I loved
your running site, and it would be great to have a man of
letters involved.
Very flattering. I am a man of letters! And here was the hook:
3 day shoot in NYC with all expenses paid

Accommodations for the race itself

If you aren't already running in the Marathon itself, we'd
also get you in!
I told my wife I'd really like to do this. Not to be in the videos, that would be fun. Maybe a little weird. Was this all pre-event stuff, or would they also follow me during the race itself? Whatever, always a new experience. But what I was really interested was getting to run the New York again. And for free! Too good to pass up.

I hadn't even run the 2012 CLE yet, I didn't know if I could run another marathon, how I would do. I would be committing to two marathons in a single year ... could I really do that?

Expressing my interest, I was asked to make an introductory video, talking about what running means to me, etc. etc. So I did, and they said they would get back to me. But I never did hear back from them, not even after contacting them to once to ask about the project. Now, I know in theater, for auditions, sometimes you do not get a call either way. But as it was they who first contacted me, a response would have been courteous.

I haven't really thought about this potential offer since summer, but I was reminded of it during the past several day as controversy rose as whether to hold the 2012 NYC Marathon in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. What would Pengo do? I harbored illusions that the citizens would rally behind this annual event, one for which they show such pride and enthusiasm. I knew things were difficult in Lower Manhattan, but I didn't realize the lasting extent of the damage in Staten Island, and Brooklyn, and elsewhere, and the dire circumstances for those left without power, food, and water. This was Thursday.

I remembered October 2001. I had made plans to see a friend in a play festival, and got tickets to a new Broadway show, prior to the events of September 11th. I had plane tickets. After 9/11 my friend cancelled her production, and I thought I would scrub the whole trip. But Mayor Giuliani said, "Come to New York. See a show. Spend money." That was my original plan. So I went ahead with it, and I was rewarded with the gratitude of my New York friends, and was happy to visit this city that I was just learning to love, that had been so hurt, but that was keeping calm and carrying on.

But my visit was three weeks after the fact, and a functional normalcy was in place. Not so yesterday, which began with some seriously angry voices on facebook, discussing the mayor's announcement that the race would go on. Even when these cries rose to a fever pitch, and the announcement was made to cancel the event, numerous snippy huffings of "at last -- sanity" conveyed such resentment. Most of these comments weren't even coming from New Yorkers.

One thing I have noticed through all this is the outrage expressed towards the runners themselves (sometimes referred to as "joggers" which I do not have to tell you is really irritating) as though what we do is some goofy lark and not an actual athletic pursuit. Would this situation have been spoken of differently if a vast natural disaster have struck the site of, say, the Super Bowl? And wouldn't drastic action be taken -- for the sake of American dignity -- to make sure that game went ahead, somehow?

The first New Orleans Saints game following Hurricane Katrina was extremely emotional, a time of great celebration. This year's marathon, taking place as it does in, around, over these scenes of devastation, and so close (a mere six days) from the actual disaster, make this situation very different than the one I hypothesized. But I am willing to suggest that it was that desire to fulfill the human attachment to our games, and what we get from participating in them as actors or spectators, that Mayor Bloomberg and marathon organizers had in mind when the suggested going ahead with the race.

 Closing arguments.

Witness the fitness

Good luck to my brothers and sisters running the NYC Marathon this weekend!

(And to the wife, who is going to see Paul Weller at the Apollo.)

Yes, my wife is flying into New York on a huge travel weekend to the City. Am I nervous? You bet. But it's Paul Weller. At the Apollo. I did not want to stand in the way of that.

At least, not when I thought she would be driving there.

The Big Question: Will I apply for NYC 2011? I suggested on the day after the big race in 2006 that I might want to try again in five years. I even had two aborted attempts in 2008 and 2009 to get back. Should I apply? I do not forget how difficult training was. And that was with an infant and a three year-old. The demands today are greater, not less.

But this is all about me, right? I mean, any marathon has to be.

Dingbat

If you don't see it, I can't explain it to you.
To Some, Winner Is Not American Enough - NY Times 11/3/09

As soon as Mebrahtom Keflezighi, better known as Meb, won the New York City Marathon on Sunday, an uncommon sports dispute erupted online, fraught with racial and nationalistic components: Should Keflezighi’s triumph count as an American victory?

He was widely celebrated as the first American to win the New York race since 1982. Having immigrated to the United States at age 12, he is an American citizen and a product of American distance running programs at the youth, college and professional levels.

But, some said, because he was born in Eritrea, he is not really an American runner.
No, it is more important to cling to your fear and racist pride than to embrace a breath-taking national victory. There are those of us who say that suggesting the President was born in Kenya is racist hate-mongering. And there are those who say that to suggest such is racist hate-mongering. So which camp am I in if I say the "birther" story and this story are the same story?

If you are Black, you are not really American. That's the message folks. If it makes you sick, speak out.
It's telling that a story about a marathon runner reminds us that we still have a long, long way to go. - Rob Cottingham
LATER:
"He is an American citizen thanks to taking a test and living in our country...Nothing against Keflezighi, but he's like a ringer who you hire to work a couple hours at your office so that you can win the executive softball league."
-- CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell

I'm a man with a whole lot on his mind

Okay, that's it. One vote, and it's no. I'm not going.

Of course, there are three days left in this poll. But the one person who reads this blog has already voted, so what's the point. I'm not going.

However, the CHICAGO Marathon is October 11.

Now, marathon or no, I need to get serious about training. Life training. I am going to hurt myself one way or another. Starting - uh - tomorrow, I will begin recording my weight-bearing and balance exercises.

So you have that to look forward to.

We've got to find the time

Hey, I created a poll; see right. Please vote.

I am on the fence about NYC 2009. Not least of my worries is that it falls on Nov. 1 - I either miss a Halloween with my family (it's a big day for us) or we all spend it in New York ... which wouldn't absolutely blow. But the kids would most likely be disappointed.

Then there's training. Knees. The money involved.

On the plus side, I rilly rilly wanna go.

Beautiful day, sunshiny and cool. I wore the pants, because after last whatever that was, last Sunday, I can't take cold legs right now. So I am pretty sweaty. That's okay, too.

However, I am missing a birthday party for this. But I have missed several days, what a drag, weather gets better, life comes crashing in. Wah.

Splattered all over Manhattan

I'M GOING BACK TO NEW YORK!

... maybe.

Okay, here's the deal ... after completing the 2006 NYC Marathon, I swore I would never do that ever again. That was Sunday. On Monday I was trying to imagine how I could improve my time, how to train with less stress on my life personal and professional life, and how soon to return. This while padding delicately around the Central Park Zoo.

Toni agreed 2011 would be a good year - five years between New York runs, if I were madly compelled I could run one somewhere else in the meanwhile. I have done two Halfers since, training for those was not difficult, time would still be an issue for a full 26.2 but I thought it won't be as grueling as the first.

I knew two things; you can only get turned down three times in the NYC lottery (as my time is nowhere near qualifying) then you get in automatically on the fourth. I also knew if you do get accepted, you can cancel any time before the last week of October and keep a place in the marathon the following year.

So I applied this year. If I didn't get in, no problem, and if I did, I could roll it over until 2011.

I didn't catch the fine print ... I can cancel today and apply for the race next year by paying the non-refundable entry fee all over again.

Yeah. Well. Oops. Duh.

My wife was not as pissed as I thought she'd be, seeing as how we are trying as hard as anyone not to throw cash in the street. I had no intention of suggesting I pay the fee over and over for three more years. To my relief, she has at least entertained to idea that I actually do it this year. This is something I had not intended ... but really, why not?

I ran 4:15 last time. I will, again all rational belief, shoot for four hours. Four hours at 40 - yes, I am turning forty this summer. I will train well. I will cross the city of Cleveland again - this time with food. And as God is my witness, I will run the 2008 New York City Marathon without headphones.

Maybe. If I go.

Will nature make a man of me yet?

It was not lost on me last Friday that it's been a year since we departed for NYC for the 2006 marathon. Recent events have made it necessary, even desirable, to cut back. But there have been astonishing drawbacks. Let me tell you about them!

As I have relaxed into sleeping in for a change, my headaches have returned. These past two weeks have been just awful, a return to days I was hoping I had put behind me. But the causes are much clearer. Lack of exercise, lack of proper sleep (I said proper - getting five hours of sleep all week and then taking in ten on Saturday is not a good thing for me) and being nudged in the crotch all night long by a restless child all adds up to woozy, sick-making mornings.

WARNING: This is gross.

And then there's the mosaic. Do you mind if I continue to call it that? It's like saying "departed" for dead or "popular" for whoring around. The formaldehyde treatment has been going well for over two months. But it has taken its toll, and the skin between the warts has dried severely, and that combined with the callouses that develop had created a serious mess by last Sunday night. There was still seepage Monday morning, so I called my podiatrist, whom I love, and he bumped up my appointment to Tuesday.

I love that part where doctor's ask you about your kids or how work has been going, or something specific about what you are up to that they know is important to you. I means they are about to inflict pain. I am ready for this. I am game. He went at my foot with a razor while I talked about all the great time I have been spending with my kids (mmmnnn) and how much they were looking forward to Hah-hah-Halloween and how much driving I have been doing lately and mmmnnn-I am sorry I am not taking this better, sorry, sorry about that. It is an interesting conversation.

I laid off the treatment for a week, padding my foot, letting everything heal and dry out - funny, there was a lot of raw skin, but no blood! Man, he's good. And, of course, I have avoided the street.

Stats:
Distance: 5.15 miles
Weight: 168.5 lbs.
Stretches: yes
Drink: Accelerade
Start Time: 1.30 pm
Temperature: 48º
Weather: brisk

And if I can make five miles, once a week ... it's not great, but it's better than nothing.

Badass - The Crystal Method
Cooldown: Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae

Last night, over dishes, I was sharing some minor bit of info about the NYC Marathon - we'd talked about Ryan Shay, I was telling her how I'd probably be paying attention to the Olympic Marathon for the first time in my life - and she said something like, "You wish you were there now, don't you?" In a way, yes. But honestly, no. I liked having a summer and fall this year, more time with the kids, later mornings and nights. It was so difficult. But I still plan on going back in 2011.

Another damn word on headphones.

No better time than right now

9/11/2007 I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies.

Wow. Wish I had a time on that, I just tore. And maybe I tore something, can't tell yet. Was planning on running tomorrow, as per my ritual, but the wife is trying very hard to establish her own exercise routine, and just signed up a the rec center. So it will be she getting up at 5 am.

I have been so wrung out lately ... which was part of the reason I just needed to get out. Bad day. Don't want to talk about it.

The girl insists on my reading to myself in her room while she tries to go to sleep. Usually I am just place-holding for Mom until the boy is down, and that irritates me. The girl fidgets and I don't get any real reading done.

Recently I have been looking over my running journal from the NY Marathon, and she wanted me to read that to her, out loud. I thought it would bore her, but instead she just had a million questions about all the strange words. Gear, splits, goo.

I got to the part where I whine about my father not inviting me to run with him and she asked why he never invited me to run with him, and I said he probably didn't think of it, and when I thought of asking him, I feared being a mile or so out and having to come back by myself.

She asked why he didn't think of asking me, and I said it's like how grandma gets down on the floor to play with her and brother, she never did that with us, because it didn't occur to her to do it. But she learned to.

"Did her mom and dad teach her to get on the floor and play with her grandchildren?" the girl asked, and I said no - your mom and dad taught her how to do that. Her mom and dad would rather be caught dead than get down on the floor to play with a child.

I didn't say that part, about being caught dead.

Podrunner: 149 bpm - Running Out of Summer
A breezy, summery feel that gets hotter as it goes. Summer can't last forever, so take advantage of it while it's still around.

Hey - that was a good one. I don't generally like listening to a mix that is just under my normal pace, but that was just what I needed today. Starts like a glass of iced tea and before you know it you are slamming margaritas.

Maybe I should write his blurbs.

Followed roughly the same route as L. and I had been traveling the past two weeks. Nice excuse to make it to Cain Park.

A slickery night out, making sure the cars see me, making sure I don't wipe out on a patch of newly fallen snow. But after the last several runs, it was downright balmy. There is supposed to be a big dump of snow tonight, so I am not sure when I can hit the roads again, I hope it isn't long. This has been great.

Rehearsals begin tomorrow, a new project. I think I have crawled out of my hole. Let the New Year, finally, begin.

"The DJ gods smiled on me and turned my totally impromptu hour of mixing into one of Podrunner's most energetic sets so far. Think I'll burn incense."

No, I haven't been holding out on blogging, I seriously have not run since Thanksgiving. This is a list of excuses:

I have been working on my eating.
Alcohol is very enjoyable.
Payback - my spouse has a life, too.
I wanted to touch base with the children while they still remembered me.
Thanksgiving!
Christmas!
New Year's!
Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
It's just too painfully cold out.

10 freaking degrees. Starting out I thought I'd made a huge mistake. I had all the proper gear on, longjohns, long undershirt, the polar fleece, even that weird neck thing my MIL gave me (that item is dynamite) - and I'd found my favorite hat! Been missing that one since I (didn't) take a run in Chicago.

But the wind was ripping my face. The neck-thing can be pulled up over your mouth and nose ... but then my glasses fog up. Oops. I was getting those snot icicles.

Mmmm. Snot icicles.

Eventually I just didn't notice it, though I think 3 miles is defintely the limit until the thaw. But then, why do I need to run any farther?

DJ Steveboy was right, Body Language is one of his best mixes yet. I have missed them. I recently found a brand new use for PODRUNNER; I was listening to it while figure drawing last weekend. In the past have always listened to jazz when I have a live person in front of me for sketching, but I needed something new. Like running, or any of the million other pursuits I have that I do in earnest for short bursts of time and then neglect for years, I always feel my drawing gets better when I leave it alone for a while. It was a great session, and part of the credit goes to the mix (though most goes to the model.)

God. I feel good. And I haven't for two weeks now. There's just all this stuff piling up in my head, and I swear I was going to just disintegrate into tears while watching the kids at the Children's Museum this morning (it's a snow day ... everywhere) and then it struck me - I have got to run.

Endorphins. Love 'em.

NEW YORK MARATHON FUN!

Watch me run the marathon (as represented by a tiny red dot) from start to finish! See me pile it on in the middle of Brooklyn and then peter out the rest of the way home! Race my little dot against those of Lance Armstrong or Bobby Flay (they were both faster than me)! Visit the ING NYC Marathon Course Simulation!
