Thank you for holding me.

August begins in earnest. I am currently alone. And yet, I am booked. It has me a little freaked out, honestly. But maybe it is a good thing. I have plans, I have so many plans. I am also adrift, I don't know what to think, or how.

I need more sleep. Even more sleep. There is never enough sleep.

And I will continue to run.

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 29:50

Spent several hours last night with a good friend, sweating it out on the side porch. I put out the main bulb, so it was all pepper lights and candles, and as our talk continued, the sun went down and our cups refilled, her face began to change. It's always so incredible when that happens. It was a very good night.

I do have friends. Sometimes I know where to look to find them.

I'm chill like that.

Pretty epic.
Here's the thing about my last run, or my last two runs. They were slogs. Often, I am feeling down but when I hit the road I feel great. It's kind of why I do this.

The last two runs, especially on Monday, and in spite of the lighter weather, it took effort to lift my feet. And then on Tuesday I just tapped out at work. I almost passed out, twice, I think. Not feeling well. No pain, no temperature, just malaise, dizziness, exhaustion. I slept thirteen hours on Tuesday night.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Duration: 32:19
Pace: 9:13

The consistency, it has been a gift. Sometimes you need time off. We have been driving to Maine, getting in and out of a car has been arduous. Just sitting down. Just walking. Sitting down is actually more difficult that standing up. I need to see a doctor.

And now, we are on vacation. We are in Maine. I did not know if she would be with me, but she is. Beside me, holding hands, reading, drinking, writing, loving. It was a difficult drive (my leg, the weariness) but here we are. Currently at peace.

It's you and me. Forever.

A respite, of sorts. I do not know how long. Mornings spent talking, loving. We drink our coffee black now. I used to drink coffee black, until I met her. She taught me cream and sugar. And then only cream. We change. Coffee is a blessing. I mean, it is the result of conquest, so I probably shouldn't call it a blessing. But I am grateful for the drink.

Still a band of pain around my right calf, and when I sit or stand it can be a minor ordeal. Some days. Other days no problem. The wife thinks I should see a doctor, and she is correct.

Life is short.

A chore-free Saturday. How far will we run?

Distance: 5.75 miles
Duration: 53:45
Pace: 9:20

The wife is having a tremendous west coast adventure (see photo) and I am celebrating the completion of the school year.

When she goes out of town, I have these fantasies of organizing and de-cluttering and that often lasts six hours on the first day.

As she is out over two weekends, not just one, I am hoping to accomplish more than usual. The weather has lifted my spirits.

Route: Forest Hill-Cain Park Loop
Temperature: 60°
Climate: ideal
Mood: good

Yesterday and today, I have felt pain across my chest. Not like "chest pain" but more like muscle pain, perhaps from overexertion, I do not know. After this run, I do not feel it any longer.

High School Run (1982-1985)
Fantastic Day (12" Version) (152 bpm) - Haircut One Hundred
Since Yesterday - Strawberry Switchblade
Doctor! Doctor! (Phil Thornalley Remix) - Thompson Twins
New Religion (Carnival Remix) - Duran Duran
Don't Box Me In (160 bpm) - Stewart Copeland ft. Stanard Ridgway
Two Minute Warning - Depeche Mode
New Kind of Kick - The Cramps
Hello Again - The Cars
Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life - Indeep
What Rap! (Enjoy What You Do?) (Unsocial Mix) - Wham!
Black Diamond - The Replacements
Baby I'm a Star - Prince & the Revolution
(You Can Still) Rock In America (165 bpm) - Night Ranger
I Confess - The Beat

Remarkable, a longer run, a slower run, a casual run, a beautiful run. The result? My mind went places it does not normally go on a shorter run. I started thinking about the future, not the past, making plans for camp, for the writing workshop, and also the Wilde scene work.

Exercise is good. Thinking is better.

We did it again! Fifteen runs in a month. Consistency. Three months running, a streak I have not maintained since 2023, the last period when I would try to run every day. It is a conscious choice not to run every day (unless making up for a missed day) and it has kept me, for the time being, from injury.

Wonder why you stopped getting high.

The wife has departed for points west, not to return for almost two weeks. The elder will join me in a day or so, but they have such a busy schedule I will still be largely on my own.

The school year winds to a close, there is so much yet to do. The question is whether I will be able to take advantage of my time alone to be productive, remain focused, and feel satisfied with how I am spending my time.

Distance: 3.2 miles

Prepared my first batch of cannabis brownies last night, yes, a 57 year-old man making the pot brownies. Would I be successful? I was. They hit after about an hour, I wisely took a modest sample because they turned out to be pleasantly potent. For the first time in many days, I slept well and long -- and still woke up before eight am. What a weekend!

Run, run. run. How we run!

Oh my God, that week finally ended. It was full to bursting with work, and good work, but exhausting and mind-consuming. Not a lazy week, no. And we ran! And that is good. This weekend is more of the same, only on my own, shopping for the holidays, attending creative meetings, visiting my loved one for dinner (she is having a personal retreat), doing chores, reading, writing, etc.

And more running!

I hear you're mad about Brubeck.

Will you be there?
The mornings start later, the mornings get cooler. It is supposed to be a beautiful, warm day tomorrow, and then the rains come.

Running out of doors, feeling the air, watching the leaves turn. Giving the geese a wide berth. It's a lovely park.

Distance: 3.1 miles

Most days I had to start thinking about my writing task from the moment I got up ... so I felt obliged to take with me into the park whatever music I was writing about. As I ran, finding an alertness parallel to whatever I was listening to, I would form an idea of a way to start an essay or description of a sound as I felt it through moving limbs and whizzing atmosphere, sometimes an idea so crazy I had to dare myself to type it out.

Wore shorts, but with a hoodie. That was ideal. A lovely fall day, cool but not windy. The air, the sky, the pavement, the trees. Deer in yards.

The Sophisti-pop thing ... we didn't call it that in the 1980s, the term came later. But we were in it, wearing ties and blazers, saddle shoes and concerned about our hair (I could never do anything with my hair, anyway, no loss) smoking cigarettes and sniffing glue.

Then, nearly ten years after, Toni and I were courting and we were lost and I was married to someone else, and she showed me Washington Heights and she showed me her room and we listened to vinyl records from our teen years and fantasized about an adolescence together we never had.

And then and then, some six or eight years ago, I discovered the Blue Nile. How could I have never heard of the Blue Nile? And it took me back to 1994 and to 1986, and I got all confused. And I was happy in my confusion.

I can handle my shit.

My goal this year has been consistency. That, whatever else is happening, that I run every other day. Also, that I not run two days in a row. Take that break, even when I am desirous to move. Run, rest, repeat.

So far this year I have run as many times as I did in the entirety of 2017, which was a year that involved a lot of travel, and a lot of distraction. A wedding, a graduation, a fatal illness. Ninety-nine runs in 2025, as of today.

Many year I run between, let's say, one hundred and one hundred and ten times. Two years ago, in 2023, I ran almost two hundred times, which isn't normal at all. No idea why I did that.

At this rate, I hope to have run between 160 and 170 times by New Year's. That's a lot. But I think I can do that.

Distance: 2.34 miles
Duration: 27:09
Pace: 11:35

So, anyway. Had to take an extra day. These days are hot, and I am listening to my body. That's good, too. Take that break.

Also, we spent a day (and two nights) this past weekend at Cedar Point. Okay, so now summer is over. Just kidding, it's not. We have two baseball games to attend just this week. It's crazy.

My spouse encouraged me to ride more ride than I would have desired to, but I am all right. I have a real discomfort with heights, but there were some special moments. Daddy wanted to see all the young college students doing their dancing and their singing before they all return to college. Is that creepy? Of course it is. Totes creep.

Thank you for holding me.

Oh, you can call it cotton candy,
I call it
spun sugar.
Oh, the knees. Also, big week for indulgence. Sunday not only featured a big breakfast of toad in the hole,  but also dogs and beer at the ballpark, concluding an overwhelming day at a new Korean hot pot spot where I think I did a decent job of moderation, but who can tell with such tiny bowls?

Last night we held our twenty-fifth anniversary party, where I was moderate but still, I grew accustomed to just grabbing whatever and putting it into my mouth. Also, I have gotten used to the afternoon nap. What if ... what if I ran, instead?

The party signaled the end of our anniversary celebrations. The crossing, the big dinner on Monday (that was a delightful surprise) the party. It is time to relax, to write, and to run.

It's ninety-one son, so something's got to change.

Epic Cleveland night last night. Standing around the atrium of the CMA (iykyk) sipping drinks, waiting for entrance to the 680-seat Gartner Auditorium for a unique performance from Jon Batiste.

Just before the performance began, I had to enquire of my spouse about the handsome young man seated next to her.

"Are you sitting next to the Mayor of Cleveland?" I whispered. She quietly assured me that she was. He'd already complimented her boots.

It was just that kind of night.
