I don't even care what my best friends are doing.

The wife works at a book store, so she will be very busy from now through the holidays. She's working Friday nights, which means I need to plan my evening. I could go out, sure. See a play or a movie. Last night I made a pie, from scratch. My first. Never even made a crust before. It was a success.

I was also taking large pieces of furniture and other things out of the house to put onto the curb. And not drinking. Or not drinking right away. It was after the chores were through and the pie was baking that I sat by the fire, listened to music, read and had a cocktail.

It was a very good night alone with David. I'm learning better how to be with me.

Dawn escapes from moon-washed college halls.

So far, I have been doing a lot of housework, and chores on behalf of others. I need to get my personal writing into my daily schedule.

Today is the first day of school … but not in this house.

I hope to be inetentional about my time. Just because I have it doesn't mean I use it well. There is houseowrk, to be sure. But in addition to work work, that can take a good part of my evening. Tonight, the wife is engaged and so I plan to have a date with myself, to get organized artistically. To write.

My thigh has been bothering me, nothing strange nor unusual, just a pull in the quad, the sartorius muscle, at least that's where it seems to be. That long, narrow muscle that crosses the thigh. It is irritating throughout the day.

This is, I believe, the result of hours of driving the past several weeks. It was a problem I endured a great deal when I drove a stick.

There's more than one answer to these questions.

These two.
We are planning rehearsals for the residency. The wife works at the bookstore. We are happy making plans. Making dinner. Watching shows. Also, clearing space. Dreaming anew. This is another beginning.

Did I drink too much? Am I losing touch?

Maintaining. That is the struggle. It's not like I dn't have a million things to do. But where is my desire? My fulfillment? Part of his malaise is due to the end of the semester, to be sure. But it also may be the impending high school graudation of my daughter. Who am I, what is my purpose, and what comes next?

The wife has been out of town for a few nights. I have been drinking too much. It's not because she is out of town, I'd be doing that, anyway. It's end-of-semester malaise, I know. But something else. One of the birds is soon leaving the nest. And what have I done? Where have I been? And where am I going?

At the very least, these questions generally keep me on the road.
