I feel so strong now.

Home again. Rainy day. Funny how a 64° morning, after a spring rain, can feel cooler than a dry 56°. Maybe it's the moisture in the air?

Distance: 3.1 miles
Duration: 28:57
Pace: 9:20

Route: Forest Hill Loop
Temperature: 64°
Climate: damp. nice.
Mood: all right

Last night, depression. This morning, better. I was awake for about an hour in the middle of the night, just when I would distract myself from one concern, another would take its place.

Slow down!

When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.

The future looks bright.

Saturday, I just said fuck it and ate everything. Breakfast cereal, they brought home baba and I ate that. Then we went to a ballgame and there was beer, a pretzel and nachos. We ended the evening at Bette and had polenta fries and a vegan Caesar. I regret nothing, that was a good, hot and overwhelming day.

Today is the first day of resdency rehearsal, so of course I kept waking up all night. I rose at 4:30 to run but it was storming out. Fortunately, I had homework, so I just read at the kitchen table until the thnder and lightning passed and I could take a run between the raindrops (back to your door).

Walk Between the Raindrops

Maybe it was Lennon's swan song, the Elvis-inspired (just Like) Starting Over, or just encroaching middle age that inspired all these 1970s rock stars to start producing either melancholy  or embarrassingly poppy tributes to their younger days.

See Don Henley's Boys of Summer or Billy Joel's entire An Innocent Man LP.

Donald Fagen, he of the acid-lyriced yacht rock ensemble Steely Dan, walked the finest line between satire and nostalgia with The Nightfly and the commentary wasn't lost on me, at the age of fourteen I "got" the message of its opening track I.G.Y. (International Geophysical Year) which never gives away the game. It is openly optimistic about the untold possibilities of science and commerce ... but that year was 1957.

The song never asks the obvious question, "What the hell happened, man?" This dry wit is with me today, and explains why I make patently absurd observations on Facebook, and why my white male colleagues can help themselves but need to explain exactly how I am wrong.

This album defined my high school years, and it remains one of my absolute favorites.

Intake
Breakfast: coffee (2x), PSL, doughnut (1)
Lunch: Sittoo’s Business Special (half)
Coffee break: coffee & cream
Happy hour: beer, m&ms
Dinner: Mushroom stew over brown rice
Also, two oatmeal coconut cookies

Okay, a run before rehearsal. Ok! Now, we need to watch what we consume during rehearsal. This is where the holidays truly begin.

I just want to run away with you.

Dudes on the porch in the rain.
My wife, daughter and MIL were supposed to be in the Cove last evening, should have arrived at dinner. Instead they spent the night in a hotel in Queens, after having spent hours on the ground waiting to fly. If all goes well, they will be with us this evening. If not, we all fall into despair.

My wife and I have spent only eight nights together this month, and I miss her.

It rained yesterday afternoon and all last night. It's raining now. It's a light rain, lovely to run in. It has also brought the temperature way down.

Listened to the Spotify Morning Run 150-165 BPM Playlist, where I heard the song The Man by Ed Sheeran. God, I thought I hated him enough, what a toxic piece of shit. "I'll make your little secret public." Jesus.

Great playlist, though. With all the little hills on Martin Point Road and the variety of tempos, I was able to get a bit of our sprints in this morning.

Gonna make me run.

The boy and I will be in transit tomorrow, so the plan was for Chris and I to take our seven mile his morning. I was up early to help the women move onto a soccer tournament, and just as well as we are stuck in a heatwave.

Should be in the nineties by this afternoon, but that's cool because the 90s are having a comeback.

Week Six Total: 20.35 miles
Total To Date: 128.75

Disastrous and ideal! It was raining lightly when I departed, but hey. Commitments. Shortly after we met up at the Rec Center and headed into the park (two circuits, and home) the skies opened with rain and thunder.

I was anxious about winds, but they didn't get too strong. Trees fall all the time in this park, and of course there was the potential for lightning. And we were drenched. The upside, of course, was that the temperature went down.

I had been anxious about this run all day yesterday

KING LEAR resumes tomorrow!
Wednesday is marked for rest or cross-training, so I accompanied my ass the the gym to do some upper body work. I have always been weak, can lift much, now that I have hurt my back I don't even need to pretend that I can. But that's not good, I know that. So, to the machines.

I lasted about twenty minutes, but they were a good twenty, it felt good. Feeling it Thursday morning. Not feeling the rain, though, so slept in an extra hour. The running would come later.

Took all night before the family was present to gather for a meal together -- our first, all together, in some time! Headed out after sundown, and about a mile and a half from home it started to rain.

Big rain! Lots of puddles! And I wasn't wearing my cap (looked for it, couldn't find it, should have looked harder) so my glasses were spotty with water and catching the glare of every street light.

Meanwhile, I was charging ... but also not charging, because this is Cleveland Heights and I had no idea what was going to be ahead of me; uneven pavement, skunk family. a large hole in the ground.

And yet. That was awesome.

The phones are tight and the music's playing loud.

Home much housework can I get done before two pm? I was going to sleep until seven, but a cat started to vomit on my wife's desk around six-thirty so I had to spring into action and get him off of there before he launched. So I have been picking up a little while I wake. Simple breakfast, crossword, watched an episode of The Umbrella Academy while I folded laundry, only got halfway through.

This is what I do when the family i out of town. I do housework, and then I write about it.

Can't figure out why my left toe is hurting. Does this have anything to do with the bend in the joints? I have (more or less) successfully kept from developing a bunion for thirteen years. Keeping my toe straight, running with intention. But this is a pain which make me feel like I have been putting too much stress inward, landing on the inside of my foot.

Or maybe it's just irritation from a callous building up from all the running. I will continue to monitor.

Decided to stay close to home, as it was threatening to rain. And then it did - a little. A pleasant rain. Makes a difference when I am wearing a cap with a bill rather than being caught in a downpour in a bandanna. Hardly noticed it. Hardly brought the temperature down, I am a sweaty boy.

I think it's just the shoes, and the way I run in it. I don't really like these shoes, I should get a new pair.

Running folks in ditches.

Lord! What a run. Just wanted to get two miles in --we have a long run tomorrow -- and I dressed for the weather, but I did have shorts on.

Heading out was great, then I had to walk for a few minutes to take a show-related call. But halfway through the rest of the run, the wind picked up and the temperature started dropping fast!

Anyway, I'm fine, I feel great regardless.

What am I going to do when I can no longer run?

No, seriously. What am I going to do?

Night run. Sometimes you just say ... if not now, when? Besides, this is the warmest it will be for several days. God, I am sick of cold this year.

The leg still pulls, and the knee hurts, the left knee. I feel like I am running wrong. I am trying to manage my strides, but it is not easy. It felt better as I went along. A great night for running, perfect. Cool, a little humid. I saw lightning flashes around mile two, and just as I turned onto our street it started coming down.  And that was fine.

On this date, ten years ago, I ran fifteen miles, training for the New York Marathon. It was my first trip all the way down MLK Jr. Drive to the highway and back. Every run that summer was a new discovery, not all of them good. Check out the playlist, a salute to the early 90s.

Felt a bit winded on my way home today, shouldn't be too surprising. Stepping out it started to rain, and it became heavy rain but that was all right, because it was hat and I hat a hat to keep the rain out of my eyes.

By the time I reached the park, the clouds had gone but I could hear thunder back the way I had come. My wife worried about me out here, but I was never beneath the thunder. Then it became quite hot and sunny. So I had been chugging at a pretty brisk pace in the rain, and then I was pretty tired.

Last night we attended a dinner party with a small number of he wife's writing and teaching friends and the subject got to running, who enjoys it, who hates it, who does it regardless, and me, the freak. But it was decided (not by me) to find a 5K some time this fall for all of us, or at least most of us the participate in.

2016 Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon

That was utterly ridiculous. Ridiculous, and in its way entirely awesome.

Official Time: 1:41:21
Avg. Pace: 7:43

Place Men 45-49: 14

Previous Best: 01:43:35 (Cleveland 2010)

The morning was ominous. The forecast was perfect in its awfulness -- upper thirties and rain. Rain, everything will get wet, especially the feet. Upper thirties is exactly the temperature where I could wear long pants or shorts. Rain and wind means my legs will freeze, long pants just suck.

I decided to go with the shorts, long-sleeve shirt with a short-sleeve over it, gloves ... I would wear a rain jacket and my pajamas as long as possible before dropping off my gear bag.

And the toe separator. Introducing something foreign into your shoe before a long run doesn't sound like a good idea, but maybe it was the weather but this old man was feeling a pain in his bunion.

Stepping out of the house it began to snow. Yes, today is May 15. In a little over a month it will be summer. However, for now, we have snow.

Chris and I met at the garage and walked over to the Q. It seemed like the worst was past, it was misty but not rainy. I had memories of how cool it was last fall before Twin Cities, and the morning just got better and better. This is not, however, how nature always works.

We found our pace group. The goal was an hour forty-two. I did not tell Chris that I hoped to beat my previous, I didn't want him to encourage me to go on without him if he started feeling it somewhere along the line.

Long story short, the weather became increasingly ridiculous. There was rain. There was sleet, there was more snow, and yes, there was hail. Hailstones. Lots of hail.

This is the first time I have ever run a long race with a partner, and it was really great. I mean, seriously, I do not believe either of us would have gone as fast, or even finished, without each other's good cheer and support. If I had been alone I would have been entirely miserable, I can tell you that.

However, we crack each other up, and were riffing with great skill until about mile ten when our chatter noticeably slowed. We succeeded in keeping up with the pace group (7:49) for most of the run, and it was at about mile nine that I felt were were slipping behind, and made an effort to catch up. Soon after we were both feeling it, though neither would admit it. It was all very positive.

The most amusing part of the route may have been the decision to take Train Avenue. I mean, really? You people won't send the marathon into the east side neighborhoods, but a dismal, chuckhole cratered wasteland is good enough for the tourists?

We started in on all the real estate possibilities of the hip new neighborhood soon to be referred to as Downtown Train.

The shitty weather kept crowds to a minimum (but a big thank you to all those who came out) and it's only upon reflection that I realized that I missed out on a lot of crowd interaction because we spent so much time in the middle of the street, to avoid the great puddles that form by the curb. I didn't read many signs, there were also much fewer of them.

When we turned onto Detroit from West 29th, after the mile eleven marker, we were suddenly struck by the devastation power of a Great Lake. It is a beautiful thing to live in proximity to such a majestic body of water as Lake Erie. However, when weather is inclement it can be an angry and unforgiving force. My grandfather sailed around the world, and he said the most dangerous body of water he had ever traversed was Erie.

But we did it. Onto the Shoreway, that final incline, we kept each other's spirits high, worked past the pace captain, and made it to the finish line.

It remained ghastly, every celebratory aspect of the finish line we were being pelted with rain and sleet. Grabbing food, receiving medals, I had to get my bag and put dry clothes over my wet ones, just to keep out the chill. My legs were terribly red. My fingers were numb, they could barely untie my laces. Later I would discover my wet socks had worn a nasty tear into my left heel.

Fact is, I have not felt this miserable after a race in a very long time, Years. When I got home, took a bath, had a nap, I ache, my knees hurt, Just ugh. Horrid weather. But, hey! Cleveland.

Chris and I had been joking about the post-race beer for days, and we actually went to get it. Because dammit! After a few sips, and attempted conversation with another runner, we decided this was pointless and pitched our cups to head off to get something to eat.

Inn on Coventry. Eggs Mando. Breakfast of champions.

Heights Six Cities Marathon (year?)
My father ran two marathons. Now I realized I do not know when they were.

One was the Heights Six Cities Marathon, which used to run through Cleveland Hts., Shaker Hts., University Hts., South Euclid, Lyndhurst and ... Beachwood?

The other was in Sandusky, mom believes in 1983. I am sure I can find this information in the house, at the moment I am just ashamed I don't already have this information at my fingertips.

This is what we are doing this week. Excavation.

Distance: 3.36 miles

Running through the cold rain. It was glorious. Maybe it sounds unpleasant to you, but properly dressed, and as long as there is no wind, it is actually very nice.

I put on a cotton hoodie, because I wanted to wear my cap to keep the rain out of my eyes, but needed to cover my ears. Running in the cold with ears uncovered I can feel a little deaf for a period.

I need this time. Time to think.  I my writing my eulogy. It is coming together slower than I had thought it might.

Take it on the left foot.

Wednesday was a much-needed day-off. I realized on Tuesday morning that part of the reason my Achilles tendon has been bothering me has to do with the damn sidewalks.

They have done a great deal of sewer work in my neighborhood. The problem is, they first ripped up sidewalks on the south side of Monticello and updated the sewer. Then they ripped up sidewalks on the north side of Monticello, updated the sewer and then replaced those sidewalks. Then they moved up Forest Hills and ripped up those sidewalks, updated the sewer and then replaced those sidewalks.

Do you see what is missing?

So, there's this one block stretch, the one I take most days to start my run, with those gravel strewn trenches. This past week I tried something new, running the street until traffic comes in my direction and then I run the treelawn.

The treelawns here have also been affected by the recent work and have dips and divots. And I think I have been harming my ankles on them.

Tuesday I finally (took long enough) wrote a letter to the city to ask how soon they would be finishing the sidewalks. School starts in two weeks. Two days later, I have received no response.

The sun rises later and later. One day off is very helpful right now, but it also throws me off my mental game. This morning was another I thought hey, sleeping in is good. Rest is good. Isn't rest good? Yeah. But I have seven miles to log, this isn't a joke.

Podrunner: Regulator (167 BPM)

Yes. Tired of songs. Tired of words. And I have not had a pace below eight minutes in some time. Is this training or is just maintaining? So, anyway - 167 beats per minute for seven miles. Broke eight, felt good. My ankle feels much better after one day's rest.

Light rain at mile six, and the clouds opened up for the last half mile. Kinda fun, actually.

* Cain Park fixed and replaced the water fountain! Thank you, Cain Park! I am sorry I ever doubted you.

There is no way for you to win this race.

Rainbow.
We have arrived in North Carolina, and we had barely unpacked before I set out for my prescribed 10 mile run. After ripping my feet up three years ago - running barefoot on the beach for four miles - you would think I know better.

I was wearing shoes, but not the right shoes. I brought the green clown shoes, for fear of damaging my new UA slippers. This was not wise, as they no longer fit very well. I have two blisters on the tips of my second and third toes on my left foot.

But oh well. Seriously, no big deal. What was truly debilitating was the wind. It's been stormy here as it has been everywhere else. That was part of the reason I wanted to get out as soon as I could, I wasn't sure if it was going to rain or not.

Three miles out with the wind in my back ... ten five miles into the wind. Five miles. Into the wind. At mile six, my wife ran out to the beach with a bottle of water, which was awesome. I probably should have packed it in right there, but I figured, hey. Two more miles into the wind, what's the big deal? And then the final two with it at my back.

Sure. Tell yourself anything. Just get there.

Distance: 10 miles
Avg Pace: 8.32
Route: Topsail Beach

The final mile I took off my shoes and ran in the surf. I had looked forward to it, but it felt more desperate than joyful. Sorry. Anyway, if the weather holds the rest of the week will be considerably more pleasurable.

Running into the wind, right next to the ocean, my sinuses opened wide and I was just drooling wet snot for most of the run. I received a great deal of positive comments from the family when I finally staggered into the beach house, but I think I looked like a man on the verge of a coronary. I'm not being flip.

Anyway. Vacation!
