Groove in all slow motion.

Name this band.
(I call them "The Offspring")
Time in Athens, celebrating the twenty-first birthday of our eldest. The MIL is moving out of the homestead (it's staying the family, though) so this is perhaps our first weekend staying here. The years progress, things change. And that's all right.

Distance: 3 miles
Duration: 29:52

Perfect spring weather. Unfortunately, it’s February. In spite of my kit, the warm air, the funky playlist, I was chugging. Just chugging along. Again, it makes a difference when you’re carrying a 20 pound weight.

This game will save us if we don't die young.

We are having a lovely mom's day. Both kids home, the boy and I worked together to make egg florentine, he also made a caprese salad, we poured mimosas. The eldest helped clean up and make the table -- and had made a ceramic coffee mug for TKT.

Father-Children Run

If you know you know.
We are all off our exercise regimen, the wife reminded me to remind the kids that the three of us should take a run. So we did! A two mile run in the cold, talking about impending adulthood, piecrings, smopking, alcohol, divorce, all the good things.

I am making plans to resume "year" runs in 2021, so you have that too look forward to. It requires all new playlists, now that I have moved from an iPod to Spotify on my phone.

I'll keep coming back.

The tide is high, so I am going to try something different, I will run in bare feet. That was, I can tay near the surf without being angsty about getting my feet wet.

Patio Playground, 2020
This isn't working. It's fine, but it's not ideal. It's not supposed to be arduous like this. It's because the tide is high in the morning, and there is a very narrow strip of beach that is appropriate to run on. Also, I have been running too late. Run in the morning, and there are fewer people to avoid.

I could run, and then write. Or I could wake earlier, but I am just not in the mood for that this year.

Go back over this blog by clicking on the "Topsail Beach" label below. See how much younger I am. I've been visiting this beach every year, sometimes every other year, since 2011 (the rest of the family started the year before, but I could not join them.)  See how I have changed. See how the children have changed.

With a little perseverance you can get things done.

Night Monkey
Plans to do hills this morning were scuttled, Chris was having back issues. The girl was also going to come, but woke this morning feeling ill, she's been suffering from a cold for several days. I am feeling weak but decided to turn it into a three miler because hey, I'm up.

Took the kids to see the new Spoderman movie last night. Took them to the Capitol, I question the size of the cup they used to pour my beer. Also, I almost walked into a closet. Doing all the dad things.

Outrun my gun.

Good luck, Charlie.
No, really. Be safe.
There have been many sweet moments in our little life here as a four-piece family. It is not embarrassing at all to say there are certain pieces of Disney Channel created event tunes which make me want to cry because they remind me of when my daughter was a "tweener" and enjoying the harmless, pretend teenage lifestyle represented in the programs on that channel.

Slow down before we fall down.

That's too much, man!
Therapist recommends a treadmill, or track. Something not as shocking as pavement. There is a decent track at the middle school, so that is where I am headed.

To keep me occupied during stretches, I have been binge-watching BoJack Horseman. God, some of this is bleak. I do not know whether that is currently a good thing or a bad thing.

Distance: 1 mile
Route: Monticello Track

Walked to the middle school. Eight minutes. The wife asked recently why I was so irritated when the kids ask for a ride to school. I know I asked for rides to middle school and my mother would oblige, I also took the RTA up the street sometimes, because then it was pretty cheap to take the bus.

My middle school was a mile from my house, which is not long, a twenty minute walk. But we live less than half a mile from our kids' school. It takes eight minutes. When they can walk, they should walk. When the weather is very poor, or they are injured, or not feeling well, or have a large package to transport, sure.

Because their walking or not walking isn't really the issue. It is that I hate driving to the middle school. I hate starting the engine of my car, and burning gasoline to go less than one half mile. Turning onto the main boulevard during rush hour, idling at the stoplight, negotiating the parking lot during drop-off. That's what really makes me unhappy.

Driving to the middle school to go to the track, like driving to the gym - driving to exercise - it just drives me a little crazy. Parking so I can have a run. It makes sense in Athens, when the roads around my in-laws do not have sidewalks and the bike path is a mile or so away, that I can justify. But not driving to the track around the corner.

My daughter got to walk to her school for three years, my son for only one. I have lived around the corner from that school for getting near a quarter century, and I only got three years worth out of it. Hrumph.

I'm in need of some restraint.

Last night I was up until one am with a sick child and this morning my hip hurts from the first run I had taken in almost two weeks.

But its sixty degrees out, and it's Sunday. That is when the running happens.

Distance: 3.25 miles

Duration: 28:08
Route: Forest Hill Loop

A lazy Sunday morning, but not lazy enough. My mind is in such a tumult I could not locate my toe spacers and I headed out with my last running shoes. I should have turned around, I had a kink in one ankle, then the other, and in my right knee again, briefly. Took it a little easier. That's hard for me to do.

I am overdue for new shoes.

Every step of the way.

Both of our children have grown an inch and a half since August. So, things have been happening.

The boy and I took a bike/run today, a beautiful spring-like day. I jammed a Bluetooth speaker into the water bottle holder, and we were both able to enjoy that late 60s rhythm and blues.

Wish I had timed that, the boy gets bigger, he can now bike much faster, and does. He paces me. I had to ask him to slow down a couple times. I hope we get to do this a lot in the weeks and months to come. I wish the girl would run with me.

God, save the people.

One new thing I have been doing is waiting until I am hungry before I eat breakfast. We adults get up early most mornings, and traditionally I would eat then. Now I wait until I am truly interested in food and then I seem to choose what I crave and not just what I think I should eat or that I am used to eating.

Usually I eat granola and yogurt. This morning I wanted half a bagel, sunbutter and banana. It's what my body was interested in. This seems to be working for me.

Priorities. An open Saturday for me, but it took two hours to sort and fold all of the laundry that has accumulated ... not counting socks. Do I continue doing housework, this list is long, or do I take a run?

What do you think?

Pavement: dusted with snow
Temperature: 28°
Climate: cold
Mood: concerned

Arduous, slipping on light snow.Cold but not cold enough to keep from heavy sweating, that was some good work. Ran past the pit that used to be the site of the Center-Mayfield. Also, a Chinese restaurant, barbershops and salons, and the Looney Tunes daycare.

Ran past that place countless times, saw myself reflected in the mirrored windows in all variety of gear, and many shapes and sizes, watched myself go gray. The windows prevented me from seeing in but who peers into a daycare center, that is creepy. But I did wonder about the children, what they were doing, how they were doing, were they learning, were they happy.

My own children had the privilege of going to Montessori school and they thrived, because we could afford it. Now those children (and yes, I know, over the years they were always different children) where do they go? Where do their caregivers go?

Sometimes I think this country is one big hole in the ground.

In the road before us stood a weary grayish man.

Don't be that guy.
Then the rains came, plunging our corner of the world into something a little more like winter, or at least that part of fall when it is rainy and cold. There were a number of wonderful outdoor activities we had planned for the boy (several presents involve geocaching) which had to wait.

The wife and I need to work, too, which is nothing unusual for this time of year She must grade papers, and write, and so do I. The reveling has been low-key this time around, but we've still enjoyed sleeping in. This morning, however, we rose before the kids so sit by the fire and relax and think before ... I'm not sure, what comes after that?

Distance: 3 miles
Avg Pace: 7:57
Route: Hocking River Bike Trail

Solo run today, the wife went off with her sisters to see Sisters. The temperature is twenty-five degrees cooler than yesterday, the wind of a kind which makes my uncovered ears ache. But it felt good. That pain I had reported no longer troubles me.

The kids and I are headed Uptown, the girl wants to do some shopping! The boy will have to deal.

Time in a bottle.

The last few days were a blur, they truly were. This vacation – a two-week vacation, we’ve had those before – have taken us further than we have been before as a family. They grow, we push them, they want to stay young, but their imaginations are broader than ever before. They believe their tastes are simple, but they are sometimes unsatisfied with simple things.

Those films were deep and poignant. Just leaving the cove for a day seemed like growing up a little. My father’s 80th birthday was another significant day. The older he gets … the older I get. The wife prompted me to say a few words before wine hour concluded and most of the guests departed. I praised him for giving me a love of Shakespeare and history, but someone had to remind me about the running. Ah yes, that certain way he inspired me to run.

He falls now. He takes the stairs with both feet. He does not walk very far. I run faster.

The last full day we had the annual treasure hunt. Last year should have been the last, at least for certain people. But letting go of childhood memories is so very hard. She says she was disappointed in the treasure, but I don’t think that was it. I think the memory of something joyful makes you want to do it again, and again. And then you’re twelve.

Part of the treasure, however, was a bottle and paper for a message to be cast in the sea. She has expressed an interest in this. She drew a color picture of the Barnstable and a note with contact information on it from the entire family. We corked the bottle, wrapping the end with duct tape.

The sun was beginning to set, the sky was blue with billowy clouds. She and I and the boy took the motorboat, speeding fast, out of the cove. The water was at first like glass, then a bit choppy as we headed out to sea. The true open sea would be miles away, but we headed out further than usual. My two children sitting in the bow, wind in their hair. Facing the open sea. I thought, perhaps this is a core memory.

The tide was high, and now heading out. When we were just past Cow Island, we decided we had gone far enough, and the boy tossed the bottle as far as he could. We did a pass-by, to see if it were going to float. She felt unsure about putting a piece of art at risk. But it seemed watertight. We’d discussed this. Maybe it would wreck, the bottle would break or take water and the picture would sink. Perhaps it would just come right back into our cove. Or just perhaps go somewhere else.

We returned to the cove. The light was perfect. My children are growing. Days like these happen only once. Once can be a lot.

Nothing's ever tough enough until we hit the road.

Snacking is a thing, we all know this. Gen X aged parents have had it impressed upon them that they must provide snack. We all know it, we all complain about. Those of us who have tried to rise above the garbage to provide something different and healthy are treated to the confused or even suspicious stare of small children when we offer something home baked or otherwise not arriving safely in a factory-fresh wrapper. Anyone who brings water to the game instead of Gatorade is treated like an asshole.

We've read these articles and blog entries, I need not add to those. Just to tell a personal story. We have had the benefit of a wonderful childcare associate for years, named Sarah. Her job is to keep the children safe, to provide oversight. She is not a nanny, it is not her job to correct the children. They do not need correction, anyhow. Much. She follows our lead. My wife reminds me not to give her too much instruction on how the kids are supposed to spend the two hours between the end of school and when we arrive home from work.

But she is, of course, there for when the kids want Snack. Not a snack, like something to nibble on, but Snack, that fourth meal between lunch and dinner. And as our home is often the venue for classmates who are also in Sarah's care, we keep the cupboard stocked with a variety of less-than-horrible offerings.

The problem is, by virtue of their use, they are usually not fresh. Crackers, sometimes chips, even cookies occasionally. There is yogurt in the fridge, and cheese. But they do not grab fruit or vegetables. Plant matter seems complicated to people. Or it's that a small amount of apples to do last very long, and we used to shop once a week.

But we're thinking healthy. I go grocery shopping for one bag of fresh tings maybe three times a week, like people used to do, or still do in large cities. Have we not a large city, with urban grocers? We do. I get more apples and whatever else they want, and also celery and carrots.

My mother used to do this thing, she would cut sticks of celery or carrot, stick them in a short glass of water, and leave them on the kitchen table. She wouldn't draw any additional attention to them, they were just there. We came home from school, we walked by the table, we took and ate the vegetables. Snack accomplished.

Lately, I have attempted to remember to cut up a vegetable and put it in a glass of water and place it in the fridge for Sarah to bring out after school. At the end of that day, that glass is always on the counter and empty.

Got it going on.

Stop sign of Sauron.
Monday was great, but yesterday I felt the full impact of running eight miles the day before. Fatigue in my legs, and my right knee has been flaring up a little since before the weekend - only now it is more pronounced and constant.

Also, the pad of my left foot. So, is this repetition without rest soreness, or is it the shoes? Almost ten years ago I sustained an injury in my feet and was trying to figure out what was happening and it took me a surprisingly amount of time to realize it was the shoes. Ditched the shoes, all was well.

Is it the shoes?

It's a shiny, shiny morning.

Well, that's an ominous forecast.

Yesterday afternoon on the beach, a grandfather was wading with his grandson into the low-crashing waves. The boy, naked, must have been a couple months shy of his second birthday, more toddling than walking.

The boy stood on his own, facing the surf, alternately holding his vigilan grandfather's hand and rejecting it, as the waves splashed as high as his chest, his neck.

Every seventh wave would knock him right over and his anxious grandfather would straighten him up has the boy wiped salty foam from his eyes.

Grandfather suggested, physically (it was not possible to hear him) to turn the boy around and walk him back to shore, but the boy would always turn back to face the sea. It was all the old man could do to retard this little naked boy's brave march into the deep.

My wife and I, seated in our reading chairs, held hands and marveled.

When disappointed she can predict the end of the known universe. When determined my girl is remarkably stoic. Which reminds me of absolutely no one.
